Nano-granjas: fórmula para un mundo sin hambre | Ricardo de Jesús Martínez Verduzco | TEDxCancún

[Music]
[Applause]
you knew that in a space similar to that of
your bathroom you can cultivate enough
food to feed a
family of four people throughout
the year this is what a nano farm
can achieve for you and your family without
count the benefits you can have to
health and especially the environment
since I was very small I always had
a great attraction for plants and for
nature and I was always looking for
what to do with that restlessness one of my
first incursions was to build on the
roof of my house a vertical garden that
it gave my parents great pleasure
when it destroyed and half roof and not
it grew more than anything because it did not grow
a little plant on that roof without
But my parents were very happy bah
over time however there was
a person who was my teacher in all
this of the plants I called him
granny grandmother to me I used to sit
with her while she watered
plants and pots
a tremendous heat in Monterrey I
I sat next to her while she was going
explaining each plant its leaves its
color told me about the woodlice
I talked about those of the worms and
I let them play with them while I went
learning what each plant was for
and what use could it have
I am convinced that nowadays
agriculture and the environment have gone
changing for something
which it is not the same greed and
greed of man has been destroying
the environment in favor of power
grow bigger food more
fast and in less time the human being
today uses pesticides
uses herbicides and insecticides that
end with a certain part of the plants
premises that degrade the soil and that of
last kill beneficial insects like
the bees but not only that but
also today the human being
exploits another human being to be able to
have more production
the question was what can a
physical like me who does not know absolutely
nothing of agriculture that the only thing that
It has a taste for plants and nothing
more you can do to change this
situation and then I got to
investigate I started to study a little and
was when the idea of making a
nano farm have such a small space
at home where I can grow my own
food and feed me too
family
it sounds like something relatively crazy but
also missing something in my definition I
I lived in the city I had to look for something
that makes it fit into the city and
that’s when the idea of a nano was born
urban farm a space in the house in
the city where I grow food I’m
sure that all here present
we have a space a corner a hole
a room that we have full of
teams and full of things that no longer
we use absolutely for nothing
that could be the ideal space for
to be able to start cultivating your own
vegetables and being able to feed
to your family in a healthier way
nutritious and that is already free of
pesticides that are toxic to your health
to be able to have a farm all
we have the basic elements at home and
we only require four elements
basic water earth plants and animals
the water we have almost all access to it
today and if you did not have it I think that
it is not complicated to think about having a
container that is catching a bit of
rainwater for that use in your
own farm the land contrary to
that sounds so complicated to do it is
very simple to do it if you have a
organic garbage recycler or what
it’s called a compost you can put together
all the waste that you take out of your house
of your kitchen and put them there for
start recycling the good ones
compost can generate land in 18 days
as a mac with at least 18 days
you have compost has enough to
start gathering land to start
plant your own plants and germinate
your seeds
the plants that are one of the
main protagonists in this
history
we used to think that they were very complicated
to grow and we needed big
extensions of land and that
We needed oxen and tractors
to be able to pray and have them there and
cultivate them today we know that in
a space of 30 centimeters by 30
centimeters in a square that measures
side the same thing that measures a rule of the
that we use in primary school is possible
grow a certain number of vegetables and
have the depth that this has
cell that are 15 centimeters from
depth if you add a good
compost that is rich for your plants
in such a space you can grow a
Lettuce can be grown 4 Swiss chard
can grow 9 beets and up to 16
radishes alone in a space of 30 by 30
now if I put 4 squares to what
long and wide it would get a great
square that measures little more than one
subway
in that square 16 vegetables would fit
different enough for
that a person has a salad during
all year and if I have 2 squares of
those are proven that you can
generate enough food for that
person have foods have vegetables
throughout the year without any problem
now
we are missing one of the basic elements
from the farm and I know that they are going to
say that I’m crazy if I think that it
can have a farm animal at home
I know many here will tell me hey
I live in a small house I live in a
of social interest and there will be someone who will tell me
I live in a department because nothing else
far from reality even in those
small spaces can be had
can have farm animals that are
enough to feed us
I want to talk only about three animals
that for me are the kings of a farm
urban the first are my princesses the
chickens the hens are apart from
very fun to be watching and see
all the antics that usually do
they have some properties that
we do not know a single hen can
produce between 300 and 330 eggs in a
year and contrary to what we think not
a rooster is required in order to have
a hen that produces an egg
you just have to be careful with one thing
the hens if they do not take care of them
rebels and even gang members to mine
all they were missing was graffiti
the wall of my house but outside of that
they destroyed what they found
the following on the list are the
rabbits the rabbits are very beautiful
because the vast majority of children
they like them because they are young
they caress it etcetera but what I
interesting that we know about rabbits is
that a single pair of rabbits can
have up to 80 pups in a year on
equivalent to having rabbit meat
twice a week throughout the year
in your house a couple of rabbits fit in
this space in a square does not require
more if you have two couples imagine
what will the third parties have in the list
fish are the fish the opposite of
what we think can be had in
small spaces is proven that
in a small-sized water tank that are
more or less than a cubic meter that is
one meter for each meter for ya I put
up
I can have up to 100 mojarras in size
medium
perfectly edible that I have to
they will be totally healthy and they will be
ready to feed the
feature that these three have
animals together is that all three are
can feed from the garbage that you
you generate in your kitchen and in exchange for
feed on that garbage that you generate
in your kitchen they will generate a
excrement that can go to compost
and can enrich that land that you can
use for your vegetables and have a
food still more nutritious and 100%
natural
To make matters worse I want to tell you that my
farm today
it’s a great savings and a source of
income my hens are paid their
they feed themselves with the sale of
egg and the savings that we have achieved
get with the vegetables that we produce
by much pay the water we consume
to be able to water the but I’m interested
one more thing to say there not only that but
I can presume that my family since
we have had the urban farm in the
after two or three years we have not returned
to have only one flu in all this
maybe some taquitos that we
can hurt the belly but outside
there many things have healed
I invite you to imagine that space is the
corner that room you have there full
of forgotten pieces of dusting in the
corner of your house I invite you now to
imagine how clean filled with plants
full of life full of animals
imagine yourself being able
and go to that corner and instead of opening the
refrigerator to take out the egg that you’re going
to have breakfast to be able to lift it up fresh
newly put by a chicken I invite you
to imagine you would cut the
lettuce that you are going to eat in your salad
today instead of taking it out of the
refrigerator because all that you
you imagined today is possible and today
I am convinced that a mexico without
hungry is this is not a policy where
we give money to people so that
try to eat for me a mexico without
hungry and I’m going to go a step further
I dare to say that a world without hunger
is to teach every family to be able
cultivate even a part of their
food at home to have them
nutritious rich at cheap disposal and
that family does not have to be
looking in the trash where to feed
today just over 20 years ago that
granny I died however his
memory is still present in us in
each lettuce in each breakfast in each
dinner every time we water a bush or see
a cochineal or a worm we remember
to grandma
today you can make a change also you
I invite you to do it and I invite you over there to
help me keep the memory of
a 104 year old lady who died
fighting for a better world
