Maintaining the HUMAN in a Tech-Rich HUMANity | Adriana Pueskens | TEDxMarcusHighSchool

[Music]

today I sent 298 texts i retweeted 5

tweets and liked another 18 I took 7

selfies for woodhead filters on them I

liked 76 photos but only bother to read

the captions of 10 today I spent more

time interacting with people inside of a

screen rather than outside how many of

you can relate to this oh come on hands

up I’m pretty sure most of you have had

this technology is advancing quickly

cars are driving themselves and robots

with human-like expressions are being

created we’re relying more and more on

digital advancements that eliminate the

need for human interaction spending more

time on our devices and actually talking

to our friends I fear will eventually

not be able to tell the difference

between a human with a heart and a

machine with a software humans need to

make sure we define ourselves as living

and not artificial as we make new

discoveries and create alternate

learning and everyday tools we stray

farther and farther away from reality to

ensure a future in a world rapidly

producing products one step ahead of the

next we must take at least these three

steps to prevent a downfall number one

unplug in an article by writer Andrew

Sullivan he describes his struggle to

disconnect from technology after

becoming sick four times in 12 months

with bronchial infections due to his

inability to focus on himself and what’s

real he decided it was time for a change

Sullivan signed up for a meditation

retreat let go of extreme connectivity

he described struggle to disconnect but

also talked about the extreme benefit it

presented once he learned how to adapt

Sullivan later wrote about a smaller

precise 2015 study the huffington posted

on 23 young adults participants are

found to be using their phones five

hours a day at 85 separate times most of

these interactions were for less than 30

seconds but they add up they thought

they use their phones half as much as

they actually did this shows that we are

model aware of how much time we spend

the living in a screen but whether they

were aware of it or not studies show

that technology had seized around

one-third of these young adults waking

hours in many studies it has been proven

that more time connected through phones

tablets and television equals higher

rates of obesity depression and anxiety

we don’t take the time to look out for

our health because if you let them where

we work out the more we miss out on many

young adults and children are spending

more time in front of a screen and one

YouTube video leads to the next and we

end up sitting for hours straight

watching cat videos media such as

instagrams and Facebook’s can cause

depression due to the post that people

filter their lives through normally the

tough times are not seen by a follower

only connects to friends through the

media those cleese people questioning

where others lives are so great and

doubting why ours isn’t many studies

have proven that belonging to community

groups in which people interact with

peers on a regular basis can help to

relieve this warm with depression in a

list published with the help of

psychologists Deborah sareini it

mentions media as one of the six things

that helped to worsen depression a

recommended fix this was to only reflect

of posts and articles and read one’s

comfortable with how many of you have a

awesome now put them away so I know

you’re listening to me I’m guilty of it

too being away from these devices causes

anxiety the separation option makes us

feel like we’re missing out on so much I

hope I have my phone by me even for just

a little bit I can’t resist the

temptation to take a look at it in a

study done by the non-profit anxiety UK

it mentions anxiety as one thing that is

causing depression and anxiety

forty-five percent of people polled so

that they felt uncomfortable or worried

when media such as Facebook was not

accessible molla mindset did another

study in which seventy-three percent of

people said they would panic if they

lost their smartphones I recently went

on a church retreat I learned I had to

give up my phone for the weekend the

week leading up to the retreat I became

so nervous as letting told my phone

because I’m so connected to its inside

of it rather than what’s outside I

realized I not only need it but I depend

on it I view it is necessary to check

time take pic

or for light but the retreat allowed me

to see that they’re healthy alternatives

watches cameras and flashlights for

whenever we turn on our phones to just

check the time we end up on media and

texting people instead we need to unplug

from our forms of technology make room

for less virtual reality and more

reality less space times and more

face-to-face the second way to ensure a

healthy future is to meditate unplugging

doesn’t just mean letting go it means

taking the time to let go of what isn’t

real and come back to it is you it goes

back to the traditional style of making

time to relax with the future presenting

new creations we need to study ourselves

for them if too much is thrown at us to

quickly we will become overwhelmed with

the prospect of how to use them and how

they will affect our everyday lives to

mentally prepare we should take at least

15 minutes each day to be in silence

reflect over a day and think about where

we’re going I’d like you all to close

your eyes just for 15 seconds and try to

disconnect don’t think about anything

other than yourself and I will let you

you may open your eyes how many of you

had trouble disconnecting even for just

a short period of time whew okay it can

be hard but it is essential to keeping

true to our human spirit and a quickly

changing society this will allow us to

analyze ourselves and better understand

others and disconnect from the quickly

moving world online there’s a quote by

David Lynch that says the thing about

meditation is you become more and more

you and that’s the exact purpose of it

we become so involved in everyone else

through the connectivity we have that we

lose sight of who we are last but not

least the third point is spending

quality time with family and friends two

bracelets for innovation I know it

sounds sappy but it’s time to go old

school remember those days as a little

kid where you sit around your family

dinner table and ask each other about

their days I do those days are few and

far now due to busy schedules and time

with technology many families are

spending increasingly more time in front

of a screen rather than actually talking

to each other we’re all engaged so much

in the media does a little time we do

have together we spend texting people or

scrolling through Twitter feeds family

game nights new be brought back and so

to talks at the dinner table creating

real bonds with people are more

important than some snapchat story ever

will be a family time is important but

it can even come to disconnecting with

people who aren’t virtually edited and

filtered can you name six of your

neighbors you actually talk to them I

find myself talking more to people five

to five hundred miles away then those a

few steps from my front door it seems

easier to send a text to your friend in

New York then have a continuous

conversation with your next-door

neighbor in the past children will be

found playing outside with neighbors as

time went by and technology progressed

more kids are found playing inside on

video games even between ten years much

has changed as I used to see kids

playing outside all the time when I was

five but at 15 I rarely see anyone

outside a study done by dr. jim taylor

proves that narcissism is fueled by

technology our generation is more

narcissistic than ever before all the

time spent absorbing screens has

that the amount of actual human

interaction that children have best

limiting them a vital life experience is

needed to develop social skills such as

empathy compassion and consideration for

others our generation will be exposed to

more technology that can destroy us if

we do not deepen our core values in the

article it mentions that social media

does not necessarily create narcissists

but may provide new venues to reinforce

narcissistic tendencies mobile

technology may be transforming us all

into raving narcissists as of right now

a lot of society operates like robots

not humans and that needs to be fixed we

need to be aware of how whatever we

create will affect us and we need to put

humans as I priority over any technology

we to control the technology not the

vice versa in conclusion we are not on

the road to success as the most seem to

think society is on a path to only lead

to destruction if we do not take the

time and effort to fix it currently we

are headed towards obesity depression

anxiety and pure chaos we’re trying to

balance everything multitasking virtual

with reality but as new innovations are

created we will soon find that plan to

fail to prepare for the future we as a

collective whole need to make time to

meditate unplug and spend time with

family and friends for me what’s next is

strengthening my core values and

connecting with what I know is real I’ve

begun to turn off my phone while doing

homework by doing this it brings me

relief and peace I’m spending more time

with my family and have making more time

for myself I’m quickly learning if I can

do things right today I’m making way for

a great tomorrow what small changes can

you make today that will have a lasting impact on your future
