Lessons From a Rubik’s Cube | Martin Malinov | TEDxYouth@AASSofia

[Music]

this Rubik’s Cube changed my life

how can become someone who does not give

up the first time I saw the Rubik’s Cube

was in 2015

remember be regular cube with a

challenge if it softens day I’ll get an

award I scrambled it up and it became a

huge mess of colors I tried randomly

turning the pieces and in ten minutes

you guessed it no luck tried solving I

tried turning them again and again and

again with hopes it’s one point in who

gets off no it didn’t

after 30 minutes of randomly turning

pieces I got an idea I googled how to

solve a Rubik’s Cube and thousands of

results came up I clicked the most

this was what he was saying another

video I watched said things like first

we have to solve the white cross and

then we can solve we can orient the

first layer then we can orient the

second layer then we can permute all

layers and then we can orient the last

layer whoa ironically gave up an hour

later I felt like there was a big empty

space in my brain just needed to be

filled up I tried watching another video

which I kind of understood more I tried

solving it and solving and solving it

until what until at one point I managed

to solve it by the end of the day I had

managed solve the cube about five times

every time referring back to the video

to remember the algorithms next morning

I got my award which was which were five

different shapes and sizes of puzzles

I learned to solve those things and then

got new ones few months later I had all

the cubes that I could find in Bulgaria

by that time my 3×3 record was 50

seconds soon after I got bored bored

river cubes so I ditched him I got back

after 2 months and I got faster each day

at that time my tree by tree record came

40 seconds and my to watch record came

10 seconds soon after I found the root

real online Rubik’s Cube store and I

ordered about 10 cubes I managed to

solve all those thank yous in about a

week and January I started learning a

new white soft cubes which is the C

Fault method C fab method consists of

solving the first two layers together

and then solving this the last layer all

by itself by that time my my two got to

record drop to five seconds soon I’ll be

going to real the cube competition where

everybody goes it’s not only the world

record holder for all kinds of room for

all kinds of puzzles but it’s also the

guy who can solve the cube in

it the guy who can solve the Cuban 10

second and the guy has no idea what the

Ruby Cuba’s competitions are held all

around the world and the words are

usually just certificates almost no one

goes there for the prize people just go

there for the game the rubric you was

invented in 1984 by Erno Rubik he

invented it but couldn’t solve it for a

really long time

first competition is held in Budapest in

1982 where the record was twenty-two

point nine five seconds and the current

record is held by Felix and eggs with

the time four point seven three seconds

for this cube all of us cubers have a

strong passion for solving puzzles we

have the passion for many reasons some

of them may be improvement in your

thinking skills your hand-eye

coordination or your concentration but

don’t think that power comes easy as a

great man once said with great power

comes great responsibility first you

have to solve two learning algorithms

like this one this algorithm actually

just makes really pretty pattern an

actual complicated algorithm that

everybody has flirted in the beginning

is this one this switch is two corners

diagonally took a really long time to

learn all these algorithms but again it

paid off even though the cube is hard to

learn it can benefit you in many ways as

I said hand-eye coordination

concentration and thinking those with

the cube you look for colors that match

and instantly perform an algorithm which

I haven’t memorized and is now muscle

memory that can improve in many that can

improve you in many aspects of school

work driving or anything where for

example in school you can learn to type

faster with your hand-eye coordination

which you have learned from the cube

during work typing faster concentrating

and then driving where you can avoid

obstacles you may need it the most

important value the cube teachers

it’s not as if it’s more important to

persevere than to actually then to

remember the algorithms if you persevere

you get faster and better or whatever

you’re doing it’s not only the Rubik’s

Cube if you want to learn to ride a bike

to swim dive faster or anything else

perseverance is key second most

important aspect is practice when you

practice you get faster at anything and

you and you get used to it if you just

solve the cube or do anything once a

week for example your time we’ll never

get faster or you never get better but

if you do it let’s say 10 times a day or

for 10 minutes a day you’ll get better

and reach this car and on and off never

give up

thank you [Applause]
