I know we’ve been having some fun with
this thing here let’s see if we can get
it moving oh there we go hello everybody
this is probably all of you
it was definitely me and I would imagine
that this is probably most of us at some
point in time we recognize that as our
classroom we recognize that as a student
in a chair in the desk
in the classroom but have you ever
thought about how we got to that point
how our educational system has been
created let’s started with the committee
of 10 in 1892 and they were tasked with
trying to figure out how to create at an
educational system that’s gonna work for
everybody and they had three groups that
they could look at at the time the jail
the factory and the church those are the
three organizations at the time that
they had available to them to sort of
pick and choose some of these different
elements so let’s go through those let’s
look at the jail the jail is where we
get our procedures from it’s where we
get our discipline from it’s how we tell
the kids to move in certain areas and
it’s how we make sure that they comply
there’s also some other things we get
from the jail yard time we call that I
believe recess and of course the most
the yearbook so we get a lot of this
from the jail the next one is the
factory and that’s what we were aiming
for because of in 1892 that’s where we
were going when we left school we were
going to get a job in the factory so
that’s what we were
really hoping to prepare our kids for
and that where we get standardized we
wanted everything to be standardized all
the kids were coming out with the exact
same concepts the exact same lessons and
we are very standardized it was the idea
of an assembly line model and we are
still to that to this day where we want
them to be able to come out and be
prepared for that assembly line type of
construct and then we have the church
and that’s where we get our
instructional practices the lecture you
stand up I am here you are there I am
the keeper of the information I hold the
information here and I only give you
what I feel you deserve to know at this
point in time it sounds like a lecture
right that’s where we get it we get it
from the church and really these things
haven’t changed much have they we could
see that these classrooms still look the
same in that very first picture that I
showed you were we all probably
recognize that that’s where it came from
but here’s the problem the problem is in
the past just ten years or so okay
though think about it this way seniors
in high school when they were in
elementary school this is how much has
changed these are just a few Facebook
iPhones Android devices
Netflix became streaming Twitter
Instagram Chrome the Chrome extension
browser and iPad so just in 10 or 12
years or so when our seniors were in
elementary school this is how much has
changed and yet we’re still teaching
like it’s 1892 we’re still teaching like
the jail and the factory and the church
and that’s why I’m here to tell you
ladies and gentlemen it is time for an
educational revolution we need to make
change we’re teaching an Industrial
Revolution style in the age of cyber and
digital it doesn’t work so here are my
challenges what I’d be here if I
couldn’t give some challenges out we
need to challenge our educational system
just to even start making some changes
let’s just touch them okay we’re now
looking for major structural differences
yet we’re not gonna get that quickly
let’s just start if you’re a teacher in
a classroom close your door teach the
way you know how to teach start with
some of these things let’s look at the
idea of lights-out we have a lot we have
to teach now folks we’ve got a lot of
things the standards there’s tons of
them we need to find some time and I get
that so maybe we need to start looking
at getting rid of some things that we
don’t necessarily need and I know
education is not real good at dropping
stuff off we love to add stuff on but
we’re not real good at taking stuff off
let’s start with handwriting I know that
could be a touchy subject but when it
comes to handwriting it’s not necessary
anymore
as an educator I want my child to be
able to tell to communicate the
understanding of their content but I
don’t care how they do it they can print
they could type they could do a video
they could do a movie I don’t care how
they do it
prove to me you’ve learned the concept
and I’ve heard time and time again the
different excuses concerns about getting
rid of handwriting fine motor skill how
are they gonna be able to sign a check
what was the other one I just heard the
other day oh not be able to read
documents all true but not necessary and
that’s and that’s the part we have to
think about because it’s happened before
right it’s happened before I can’t read
that I’ve never been able to read that
but we have experts in our world who can
read that and that’s what will happen
with with cursive handwriting that’s all
happen in our future we will have
experts later down the road I’m gonna
talk about personalized learning that
means I’d be a hypocrite if I said
somebody who enjoyed and had a passion
for this well we can’t do that of course
not
if there’s somebody who has an interest
in cursive let’s run with that and
that’s where we’ll get our experts
like this fine motor skills however
however they made these things you know
I don’t have it anymore but you don’t
need it anymore either and that’s the
difference that’s where we have to start
thinking about we’re in a very cool time
folks we’re evolving spelling now I
understand you’ve got to be able to
spell some things however we don’t need
20 words every week Monday through
Friday teaching them every day no we
don’t need that I don’t even really need
to know how to spell that well anymore
Google does it for me you could see what
I did here I mean he got it and if you
look on the right see that microphone
our communication is changing I could
talk to it now and it’s gonna do it all
for me so let’s find some ways to maybe
limit the amount of time we’re taking
and spelling every day it’s not
necessary we’re evolving and the
evolution of the idea of the evolution
is really cool and it’s really exciting
because how many times can you say in a
in the history of humankind here that
we’ve had these major evolutions we’re
in a language evolution right now we
don’t need those things things are
changing just like when you know the
ancient Egyptians lost their
hieroglyphics I’m sure there are some
people that were really freaked out just
like some of us are about saying
Kinki or a famine rating that’s really
scary well it is but we’re evolving it’s
an exciting time to be alive and I could
prove to you that we’re evolving this is
this is always interesting how many of
you have ever had the side of your thigh
buzz and you go for your cellphone and
it’s not there it’s like whoa that was
really weird do you know what how why
did that happen you know what that was
it was an itch it’s just a brain has
evolved to the point now or they don’t
it doesn’t compute that as an itch
anymore because we’ve had it buzz so
many times that it thinks your cell
phone’s ringing and it makes your leg
buzz revolving folks kind of exciting
times but we have to evolve in education
right along with it avoid the wash rinse
dry repeat cycle and I’m sure many of
you have dealt with this and it drives
me crazy your classroom especially in
grade school walk in
do a worksheet bellringer after the
worksheet bellringer
you do content activity which usually is
another worksheet then from there you go
and you do another worksheet to prove
that you learn the first worksheet then
you go from there
and you get some homework for the next
day you go home you do that worksheet
you come back wash rinse dry repeat
Tuesday Wednesday and you get the idea
it keeps going on and on and on first of
all I I’m fairly anti the idea of
worksheets when we’ve got so many
wonderful many things out there
resources out there on the internet and
things like that that we can use but we
have to break this wash rinse dry repeat
cycle think to yourself right now one of
the most exciting times you may have had
in elementary or middle school mine was
fifth grade there was a simulation day
we were doing colonial times we all had
to dress like colonial kids they treated
us like colonial kids it was a very
interesting fun day I’m sure all of us
have some memory of school that was it
cool like that but how many of you were
gonna have ever thought about and went
man that was a good worksheet I mean wow
the space they gave me to do my work
that was a serious worksheet I don’t
remember any of my worksheets folks we
got to make school a little more
entertaining a little more memorable in
order to brutal keep up with the
technology and the exciting things these
kids are dealing with each and every day
and to put that in mind let’s get rid of
textbooks now there’s several different
avenues here first of all the textbook
is not your curriculum and so many
teachers if you would take that textbook
away they’d be lost and if you said
let’s do chapter three there we go I
didn’t do chapter two yeah well that’s
okay no gotta go one two three the idea
of the textbook is gone we have to get
rid of it there’s actually free
textbooks why are we spending hundreds
of thousands of dollars in public
schools for textbooks is beyond me there
are sites out there in open educational
resources that I can put every textbook
on a kid’s device or absolutely nothing
I can mix and match my chapters I could
do what I want I can add resources
videos audios TED Talks put them all
in there you can actually make your own
textbooks why wouldn’t we be doing that
this B holds us to people who are paying
the money and I hate to get into the
whole politics of this stuff but we know
the people that are paying for these
things could choose their history it’s
been proven and many times that we don’t
want to get into that but at the end of
the day dump the textbooks and teach the
way you know how to teach I did not come
into education to change to turn pages
in a textbook every day I got an
education I want to teach cuz it’s
exciting I could do all these creative
fun things let’s lose the textbooks
folks this is always a good one time to
get rid of those grades grades are silly
congratulations Yuri received a squiggly
doodle I’m concerned because you
received the honker you that okay you
received the square with Alliance on it
as a parent this drives me nuts because
if I say you got a B now in your mind
you’re thinking okay it’s not quite an a
better than a C does that tell me what
that makes kids know in terms of math
doesn’t tell you anything does it
tells you they kind of know it see they
probably know most of it
hey yeah they know a lot of it that
doesn’t tell me what they know what they
don’t know we need to look towards more
skills what does my kid know what can my
kid do in math what can’t they do in
math and what am I need to do to help
them get better in math this stuff it’s
ridiculous and it means nothing to
anybody just like that just like those
goofy symbols there it’s the exact same
thing when you’re looking at an a B C or
D nobody really that doesn’t tell me
what my child or if I receive the grade
what I got and what I know that’s what
we need to look at we need to look at
personalized learning with the
technology that we have today every
child should be able to be met exactly
where they are and move them where they
need to go on an individual basis we no
longer teach one class of 30 students we
now need to think about teaching 30
classes of one student because each
child deserves that time each child
deserves to have their interests and
their passions and their individual
needs
Mette and it can be done now better than
ever with the idea of technology so at
the end of the day folks this is this is
what we really need to start looking at
when it comes to education we’re in the
21st century we need to pull our
educational system kicking and screaming
probably into the 21st century we need
to revolutionize education to meet the
