good afternoon everyone before I drag
you along in this roller coaster that
will be my speech I’d like to make one
thing clear from the start it’s a
confession and I don’t freak out it’s
just I have plagiarized and for those of
you who are not familiar with the term
that means that I have taken credit for
something that is not entirely my own
work I know scandalous but bear with me
and this will make more sense once I
explain in a bit while writing down my
thoughts on how to formulate this
presentation and make my thought process
clear to everyone I realized that the
only way to achieve that is by making
the layout known now that might be an
issue considering that TEDx guidelines
prefer the structure of one speech to be
invisible to the audience but I feel
like we’re not strangers here and I can
trust you with this piece of information
so the way my speech is organized is
nothing short of a recurring sequence
that it’s nothing short of a recurring
sequence that is often seen in novels so
the book starts with an action-packed
scene that’s traced from all standard
plot triangles that you’ve ever learned
in English class where an introduction
or exposition is followed by a conflict
a rising action like your climax
following action and finally your
exposition this method of placing the
climax at the beginning of the story is
an effective way of capturing the
reader’s attention or the audiences in
this case and that’s you and it’s become
quite popular and widely used in books
ranging from above-average to twilight
the example I used might not be
necessarily demonstrating what I like to
focus on because my focus for today was
mostly the repetition of techniques and
general ideas that echo around the world
of creativity and this is an example of
not this lack of inspiration but rather
an effective technique or tactic that is
used to give a relative success to any
given work so
so concentrating on the prospect of no
imagination or inspiration I think we
can all agree that we’ve experienced
this at one point or another my personal
experience varies with each day but one
that is directly linked to today’s
presentation is nothing none other than
the presentation itself you see coming
up with a topic for my speech was not an
easy task because like many of you in
this room or watching me from a camera
somewhere I am quite indecisive when it
comes to making choices on what to
develop in order to create something new
because what if I make the wrong
decision
what if by picking one path I miss out
on something better I don’t I don’t
trust myself with many things of the
same nature and that adds to my
self-doubt which all of these factors
are contributing to not only my
decision-making but my thinking in
general which then coming up with a
topic that I could potentially discuss
turns into a series of ideas and
letdowns because say what I think of is
not interesting enough or cannot be
developed into a well-rounded speech
it’s just a lot of thinking which leads
to overthinking which leads to nowhere
and so for as a focusing on the what I
said before that inspiration is lacking
in today’s creative world I’d like to
bring something forward and as observant
as one can be I think we can all see it
and what I noticed is that as far as the
production of orginal content is
concerned is that it doesn’t exist of
anything other than pre-existing ideas
books are published that all follow a
familiar structure films are rarely
producing anything that the audience
cannot expect and that might not be that
bad considering that some people can see
a twist coming and that makes them feel
good about themselves I mean after all
you feel good knowing that you caught
something that was about to happen but
not so good when you see that you’re not
the only one this I admit the satisfying
feeling is great but only to an extent
and only for so long when that
repeating itself over and over things
start to get boring arguably being bored
is not a bad thing because our brains
shouldn’t be stimulated every moment of
the day but that’s a talk for another
time
now this lack of creativity will perhaps
become more obvious to you after a few
examples for many years now storytelling
mediums such as books and movies have
been productions of a previous original
and these examples are by no means bad
or lacking any appeal because to be
honest they’re all my personal to read
list and come on they’re the stories
that we all grew up with Peter Pan Alice
in Wonderland The Wizard of Oz
Rumpelstiltskin Beauty and the Beast and
they’re all being told in a different
way in these narratives and that makes
them interesting and exciting to read
the most prominent case however that I’d
like to discuss of an idea that is
dragged along is that of popular novel
and classic film psycho being released
one year after the book Alfred
Hitchcock’s Dubbs masterpiece is highly
is highly praised and recognizable to
all the 1998 film remake not so much
when you compare the two without any
context you can see that the lack of
general emotion in the if the main
characters face is sadly comical it’s I
mean it’s funny look at her she doesn’t
seem to have any real emotions as
opposed to this the older version and so
it’s not hard to see why this book this
film got so many bad reviews and low
ratings and the the award-winning actors
that played in it couldn’t do much to
help its reputation the lock of course
there are other versions of beast media
that are better than their predecessors
just like the collection of slight ease
here like keep getting better and better
as the years go by but also greater
instances such as Jane Austen’s Pride
and Prejudice one of her most popular
works
turned into an agreeable movie
adaptation that has powerful scores in
which the soundtrack is complementary to
the beautiful settings and compelling
performances it’s this 2005 major
picture film earned a lot of awards and
it’s way better than the 1995 TV
mini-series sorry Colin Firth
so although that’s one reason that large
companies like Apple and Samsung keep
releasing new versions of their devices
yes that undoubtedly earns them more
money but it does so through the
improvements on their products although
the more recent can’t be better there
are still developing upon an older type
a prototype which in the long run is the
purest form of the initial idea that was
used to create more volumes well in many
ways that is not bad because it can be
improved on or even enhanced with
something that makes a unique from its
ancestor
just like the aforementioned bad results
of psycho trying to create a replica
there are more modernized ideas that can
bring something appealing to a new
generation of people here is a book
published in 2009 called Pride and
Prejudice and Zombies it doesn’t cut
from the original sis and does give
credit to Jane Austen as well as the
author Seth grahame-smith who took her
creation and upon developing it he made
it his own in a way and now you might
ask how does any lack of creativity
relate to this exhibit to these examples
and the way I see it is when a person
has creativity as part of their job
description and choose this too instead
of creating something new then make a
duplicate of something previously
established they are withholding from
inventing new and creating new things
and making new discoveries now well
there are other books or creations that
are being told by in a new way that
applies to today’s
which is interesting to see despite the
continuous a release of things that have
been pre existed and one example is that
of politically correct bedtime stories
by James van guard who makes people see
classic stories which found their way in
the general social consciousness in a
different and admittedly new light now
it all this is great but in a working
environment where plagiarism is
including school in which plagiarism has
serious consequences
people will think twice before
developing upon the classics and this is
where my personal self-doubt comes into
play I’m too afraid that by creating
something I am unintentionally copying
someone else’s work let me tell you that
is extremely frowned upon whether you
intended or not
so to assure all my past present and
future teachers my I promise that might
previous statement about plagiarizing
words just for the sake of making a
point and I will always cite my sources
just like we as students have been
conditioned to do since middle school
but also take a look at this where good
ideas come from is a TED talk by Steven
Johnson a man with enough qualifications
to silence me which they almost did
because I stumbled upon this while I was
researching my own topic for Ted and
perfectly applicable to say that my
speech is similar to his and when I saw
this my first reaction or thought was an
Arabic expression that I so gracefully
adopted from my friends Halas what am i
doing taking up on these man’s words
well nevertheless after a few Lachlan
threats and peer pressure I decided to
ignore my doubt and take the risk and
Here I am presenting an idea previously
introduced in in my own I’ll be it
cynical yet original way so the point
still stands while laziness will and
should not be rewarded efforts should in
art for example people practice by
mimicking the experts and learning from
them while when
an identical copy of someone else’s work
and claim it as your own will be cause
for serious penalties when you simply
take the elements that appeal to you and
build on them then you can create
something completely unimaginative and
Teno state so bluntly I steal from every
movie ever made
and I know my mother is rolling her eyes
somewhere in the audience because of the
specifics of my reference thank you
mother but that just proves it
he takes parts of films that apply to
him and speak to him and either uses
them to pay them a tribute or you simply
uses them as inspiration in his own
films and that’s the side of things that
is most favored because you expand on
something old and put your own unique
twist on it just like Smith did with
pride and prejudice and Tarantino did
with every movie ever made apparently so
to leave you with this last quote by
director Francis Ford Coppola who state
says it all here an essential element of
any art is risk if you don’t take a risk
then how are you going to create
something really beautiful that hasn’t
been seen before and I hope this was
enough food for thought and
introspection to make you all realize
that you’re able to create something
amazing thank you
[Applause]
