Infinite Opportunities | John Son Oei | TEDxTARUC

very good morning to all of you thank
you so much for the opportunity to be
your friend speaker so we hear a lot
about how you no problems no problem
should be opportunities and all of you
who are here who wanted to take your
early morning wake up slightly earlier
in the weekend to come here I know most
of you probably heard of this before but
challenges how how do we actually turn
problems into opportunities and so my
talk today title infinite opportunities
what I seek to do is really just give
you some examples from myself and from
some people that I know and hopefully to
give you some practical steps as well
that’s it how you can turn your problems
into infinite opportunities and so the
question is you know one of us talk
about opportunities reading but what
does it opportunity look like it doesn’t
look like this
you’re a nicely packaged and this is
probably what a lot of us has been
conditioned to see okay you know this an
obvious one and so a lot of this up just
waiting for things to be packaged really
nicely for us like this picture behind
us but to me I believe this is what an
opportunity actually looks like so when
you see that picture what goes through
your head immediately broken followed by
poor uncomfortable during dangerous
basically negative things that you can
see and very often when you when you
face problems they are frustrating they
are very irritating they’re almost like
a mosquito flying near ya
you know so it takes up most of your
attention and can be very very glaring
but when you face a problem what you
want to do is not get distracted by it
but try to look
focus on what’s beyond in when when I
saw that particular house what came to
me was that hey how come no one’s doing
anything about that how did that start
in the first place and and so we saw try
to see look you know that’s that’s maybe
an untapped market or there’s a huge
opportunity for growth there is a chance
to leave a legacy there’s also potential
for innovation and potentially we could
make new discoveries as well and so when
we look at the problem we saw a broken
house but at the same time we look
beyond that and beyond the home we saw a
man and and we asked ourselves how will
he end up in such a house at that point
in time we immediately said let’s go
raise some funds let’s build him a house
someone said wait a minute
you know if we were to just build a
house what’s gonna stop him from ending
up in that situation yes from now we
don’t actually solve what the deeper
problem is and so we wanted to find out
what exactly that was and we realized
that we weren’t getting anywhere firstly
because we didn’t understand the culture
we didn’t know that life stuff it wasn’t
something we’re familiar with because of
that we wouldn’t ask them the right
questions at the same time we went to
him and said hey why don’t you tell this
you know why are you in this in this
situation why you so what you know and
quite quite naively that’s pretty much
how we how we put it out there and and
we weren’t getting anywhere in the
conversation and we realized it was
because he didn’t know what no matter
how genuine and
warm feelings result in eyes and our
stomachs he didn’t trust this so why
should he share anything with us and so
we saw another challenge and that was
that we needed to build relationships
and build trust and then that became
primary objective building relationships
but at same time we saw the problem and
he said how do we do both of them at the
same time so we didn’t need the solution
of just raising funds passionately
contractor contractor builds the house
coming back two months later and saying
hey I paid for the house do you like it
can we be friends now
there wouldn’t be a very good option and
we thought wouldn’t it be great if you
could work side by side together with
them and when you show them that we care
apart from that we also saw so many
people that are just hungry desert
wanting to make a difference and we was
thinking how do we connect both the net
together how do we connect the different
people groups those that I need and
those that care for them as well so that
was how I think post was created very
basically it’s about bringing usually
about 30 to 35 volunteers over a weekend
slightly longer than weekend three days
and at the end of it being able to build
houses like this right and that’s epic
homes and that’s how it was created
it wasn’t created because I’m not attack
on I’m an engineer but who created
because we wanted to be able to connect
people that care true the act of
building homes so that relationships can
be formed and so to this thing we’ve
build about 120 homes in 10 different
villages together with 5,000 volunteers
from over 60 companies and over 55
countries in fact how we even came to
this model how we even got to this
number wasn’t because oh you know we’re
very good at fundraising in fact we face
a lot of challenges in convincing people
to donate money
homes see the thing is a home if you
want to make it proper you want to make
something that stands for a long period
of time and you want to build something
that you can be proud of than the people
that look to stay in it and in product
it requires the funny higher cost than
most initiatives and so we struggled
when we went to different companies
foundation say Wow
why it’s so expensive your house no
Anderson hey you know we don’t want to
end up with four walls and a hanging
light bulb at the end of the thing and
and and so what happened was we realized
that we faced the problem because in
other parts of survive we need to put
our operations administration money cost
into it as well but we say nevermind
let’s just try to get this up off the
ground but instead seek for other ways
to find ourselves and so we looked at
what we had said hey this is a fantastic
opportunity for people to come together
and they give us best friends and we you
saw that happening over and over again
so we said why not we try selling as
team building as well
and so that’s what we did we went around
telling people how about being able to
do your team building and CSR at the
same time of course that times are you
crazy don’t you
you’re a comment normally you I mean
donate money to you you want only take
people off the clock and you want me to
pay you extra when you’ve got that but
after we managed to get our first
company to do it soon very many others
followed as well and and if you look at
the number 122 and 20 holes sending the
sin of that is actually funded by team
building it doesn’t come from the CSI
department it actually comes from is
from the H bar or zeros and so where are
we today we’re looking at this big
number there’s 12,000 or amaspy families
this makes up about
two percent of orang asli people we’re
guessing we’re estimating the number of
ten thousand poems that needs to be
built so we’ve been there are four body
and a half years now and people may say
wow and oh look at that what a big
problem but to us we say what a big
opportunity
you know the Orang Asli people has been
around for the longest time even longer
than many of us but how many of us
actually know that he exists yeah
and I believe that at the cusp of change
in this amazing country that we live in
if we really want to move forward we
need to be able to include everybody so
the way we look at this is that it’s a
fantastic nation-building opportunity
imagine not only will receive for the
first time in history such a great
nation building activity happening
10,000 homes built by citizens of the
country for their own fellow men but
these are hundreds of thousands of
and so that’s one example of how you
know it wasn’t he didn’t just start at a
green idea but it came by embracing and
kind of bunting the different problems
that we faced another example that I
felt I needed to share you guys comes
from my brothers so they’re in waste
management not very glamorous business
basically they keeping a clean sludge
ship grease everything that you don’t
want to know know about it’s dirty
there’s cockroaches and snakes of that a
lot of rats and but somehow they they
they were drawn to that business and so
what the issues that they face that is
very prevalent locally and also globally
is food waste and the thing about waste
is that same example hotel can produce
up to 500 kgs of food waste everything
but the thing is waste is not really a
priority for many see the thing is
institutionally in the background so
it’s out of sight
mind and at the same time you don’t
really get much value or profit from
waste because of that not a lot of money
is invested in waste so they wanted to
find a way to ensure that the food waves
can be turn into something valuable
rather than ending up and in the dump so
that was probably number one so then
they move down the value chain said okay
what happens then after food is
reprocessed percent to compost composted
salt doesn’t hold a lot of value and so
they said let’s turn into fertilizer but
was gonna be for this particular process
because the companies weren’t gonna pay
for that it takes a little bit of cost
to it so who’s going to buy the
fertilizer maybe the people buying will
then help pay for this cost so they went
to the farmers and say hey would you buy
a fully organic fertilizer it might cost
a little bit more but it will make your
produce a lot better and is the what say
for any health yes well unfortunately
many farmers know that because of their
own doing but just because of how the
market is shaped as well there’s they
are forced to be stuck in the always
there’s a lot of pesticides that are
being used and a lot of chemical
fertilizers and they already got all the
suppliers lined up so it’s very hard to
convince them so they weren’t going to
buy fertilizer so what then another
problem so then they say let’s try start
our own farm
and so they went looking around saying
how do i how do i farm so i brothers and
our fathers didn’t study for me inside
I’ve talked to different people and
somehow managed to work out a high-tech
Department method where he uses two
hundred percent less farm ingredients
it saves twenty percent from your
operations
it’s 50 percent cheaper and it says 90%
of the water compact conventional
farming and it produces 90% yield
compared to rank
farming when only should there be no
disaster it doesn’t disaster everything
gets wiped out but if everything works
out you probably get about 60 70 70 %
only but in this case we looked at 90
percent and so the effective farming but
the thing is what’s amazing about this
whole thing was that ya problem where
food waste from food out the tent know
where they go that they then went on the
value chain to then determine that okay
could be composted by fertilizer and
then fertilize that can be used as a
vegetable farm and a vegetable farm
would then produce vegetables and
realize that those vegetables can
actually be sold back to their clients
in the first place so the entire network
they’ve been given looking at building
all these years while doing this waste
management business which was an OK ugly
business Sonny doesn’t new being the
business to be provided and nobody saw
any issue with paying lower than market
rate fully chemical pesticide free
organic vegetables and know that that
profit some of it will be then used to
produce to process the food waste in a
responsible way
so not only didn’t make business sense
but also help the environment as well
and so that that is really another story
where you know sometimes we face one
problem with frustrated never mind we go
on to the next problem
ah so frustrated now there’s two
problems three problems for problems and
you realize that suddenly by combining
all that together you come up with a big
solution as well and I’ll be like this
for each problem has hidden in an
opportunity so powerfully literally
tossed the problem the greatest success
stories were created by people who
recognized the problem in today
to an opportunity and so next time you
see a problem stay curious
usually we our mothers tell us in stay
we have no problems I don’t give you
problems you see things around the other
way but stay curious
alright there’s boys you know something
behind it learn to care if you don’t
care where you’re gonna find your
motivation from if you don’t care what’s
going to help you focus on things that
other people are not focusing on
basically that’s your niche do not be
afraid I do not be afraid as you can see
from the stories as well sometimes wears
a lot of problems
it actually can turn up and do a good
thing see through the problem don’t look
at the problem see through it see beyond
it and finally it’s a fun process right
myself my brothers we can testify that
yes it’s so frustrating sometimes you
get irritated by it but get out of that
process but look at it look at it as an
opportunity to experiment to play to
fail and to learn from it and that’s a
fun process and that’s very very
important because the world that we live
in today presents so many problems which
based on your perspective could then be
big opportunities to you and so we’re
looking at things like climate change
climate change could be a more
sustainable future poverty we can look
at that as untapped market 80% of the
world of this below and lives below 10
u.s. dollars a day what that means is
that that still this 80% of the world
that a lot of businesses yet
what can we actually create that can
actually give value to these people in
that process you also become very very
wealthy in an adequate education you
know we complain about this all the time
but what does that mean to us
it’s untapped human potential if we can
unlock this we can change how this world
works for everyone security inequality
it’s a life changing business rain or
shine people need to you and if you can
solve this crisis it’s a huge huge huge
business that can also change the last
as long and so I hope that three
different examples that I shown you
today that the next time you look at a
problem instead of saying uh-oh another
problem you’ll say wow isn’t there
infinite opportunities in this world
thank you very much [Applause]
