Immortality | Meruked Band | TEDxKenyalang

one two three
hi everyone right
sure they’re not needed this me I joke I
joke so uh assalamualaikum and a very
good evening everyone my name is side
mahashiv and I’m the spokesperson and
the frontman of this band in his native
language we are called Merkin it comes
from the Loon Bhawan dialect and it
brings the meaning of everlasting
because we wanted to create some sort of
timeless some sort of forever in within
us when we perform and I thought to
myself how better way to do it than to
bring the lute instrument of rock the
treasure trove which is the sappy and I
spoke to my good friend mr. Gideon Reed
on stage about forming this band and he
was saying yeah sure let’s give it a try
we held an Edition at the damai Beach
Resort now funnily enough I remember on
the day itself
the management called me and they said
can you come up with an original song
oh we were panicking because we couldn’t
do that and we sat down in a room for
about two hours we couldn’t do anything
at all so I told the guys I’m gonna go
for a toilet break and I came back 15
minutes later boom the song was made and
that song is what we know today or as
people might know our song talked to
Judy
that’s how origin was born even before
the band name was around we already had
a song and we’re like what’s the song
names gonna go then you know in a
natural state natural fashion as
musicians we don’t care about naming the
and we said they’re journalists this is
call it the journey and then it worked
out we got the auditions and after that
I told the guys let’s let’s form
something serious with this let’s make a
band and hence the name came about and
then when Gideon mentioned the word
Merkel I asked him why this word and the
feeling that I got from it he said you
it meant eternal it meant forever
everlasting that resonated a lot with
what I wanted to do with music the logo
that I created well it’s not really
create as you can see it looks like a
boomerang app on Instagram it’s not you
can see the two outside aback
originality and obviously it’s in the
color pink because I wanted to pay
homage to Gideon’s late mother and the
artwork that is in the band logo was
done by a good friend of mine and so you
know three four months down the road we
still had one missing person in band and
that is my good friend mr. Titus Ron
Andrew when he joined the band we sort
of fit the puzzle
all right we’re band now what next
we played shows literally a lot of
emailing a lot of hey do you like
something music or do you like a very
handsome subway player playing subway
music that’s marketing 101 for you it
worked it works so well so the guys and
I were thinking where do we go from here
how does this make us immortal yeah it’s
a very broad term as well it’s very it’s
crazy for you to say look I want our
music to be immortal because what comes
to mind when you hear the word immortal
he’s you you won’t die
are you a god you’re not human
yeah that’s what we wanted to do with
our music we wanted people to be so
overthrown by the fact that we are doing
this euphoric choruses ambient sounding
bands and that everybody would enjoy
what we’ve been doing these are some of
our past achievements as you can see the
crown prince of Johor looks really
excited to see us you could tell he was
just there for them that’s very good and
I don’t blame him it’s probably not his
cup of tea but he enjoyed it
finally story enough when we were
playing in Johor it was raining heavily
and we couldn’t stop playing because is
a show and the moment he came the clouds
just decide to and he was there it’s
every band has a dream ladies and
gentlemen and this was us at the rain
forest World Music Festival this year
made it told the guys let’s just do this
have a bit of fun let’s not care about
what people think let’s just do this
obviously the crowd loved it it was on a
Sunday night nobody comes on a Sunday
night to come and see a new band so I
said we did good we did all right and
obviously being in a band as well you
have the turmoils trials tribulations
you understand each other more you learn
about each other characteristics you
learn about how he likes his truck to be
this high how he likes to be seated like
this he likes to be doing this all the
time a lot of things as habits there’s
things that you learn through experience
and that is the one key thing that has
been forever teaching us how to be more
of a better musician or a more better
human being it’s the people that we meet
and we were fortunate enough to have met
this amazing lady from Japan
Akira Hara studies in usm in Penang and
she told us that she wanted to feature
us in a magazine written all in Japanese
but based on struck in culture or
Malaysian culture and we were lucky
enough to be featured in that and I have
no idea what she said based on the
paragraph she’s probably written a bad
review about us it’s awful music inside
there but you know we made it it was a
could have used a better photo
right I know reaching these nation
you know cultures you always have a
sense of ooh what do people in China
think about our music or two people in
Estonia a thing of our music well
earlier this year didn’t had the
pleasure to be flown all the way to
Beijing for the ASEAN cultural week and
that was an amazing
as you can see he’s just dressed he’s so
proud of his culture right there playing
the subway he’s just doing his thing and
I totally love him for that because he’s
showing who he is he’s proud ways from
he is bringing the generations and
generation to generation of culture just
oozing of culture something that I think
won’t die out from us as Hawkins I mean
to put things into perspective yeah as
band members as Hawkins we find
ourselves more immersed in music more
than ever
I’ve had people coming up to us telling
us we can’t do it telling us that your
music isn’t great telling us that the
next big thing isn’t you that’s fine
because we know that we enjoy making
music as long as the six of us and that
is such an amazing feeling and that is
how I want to be remembered to be
forever remembered in music is that we
are immortal is that we will always love
music in the great words of the magnate
Michael Jackson culture changes fashions
change customs change but great music is
immortal
