I Speak on a City, But I Cannot Do it Alone. | Muna Ruumi | TEDxYouth@Brum

I speak on my see but can’t change it
alone I grew up in new town I found a
new sense of belonging everywhere I went
I think that’s why I was a naughty kid
at school – – like I was yeah I got
kicked about eight eight schools
I don’t joke in my big Italian schools
thank you but yeah like I got into music
from like since I was like 11 I always
had the passion for like grime rap it
was like a self-expression artform for
the people in my area but obviously that
didn’t cater to a mainstream lifestyle
but it was our reality so yeah and like
being a Muslim girl in the music
industry I feel like I have a
responsibility put on me in a way to
like represent Muslim girls and it’s not
a bad thing it’s like if you mess up and
stuff ever looks at you thinks what to
help I thought you were a Muslim girl
and it’s like where do we win like where
do we go from there kind of thing but
yeah like the journey all started in
2013 I started a scheme called music
potential which God means a radio and
like I had no clear about what I was
doing I just knew I had a love of music
and I love politics as well but that
conscious side of politics was there but
I like I knew I loved music but I wanted
to pursue politics and just didn’t know
how to go by it but all my friends made
music I used to go to youth center
called the lighthouse and I met some
lovely people there some of my friends
used to make music there and I thought I
loved music so much I can’t rap I can’t
act I can’t produce I can’t do anything
but I couldn’t talk a lot of rubbish for
days so let me just go in the radio and
I was like I’m gonna do radio I just
don’t know how to go about here I came
came across this scheme I did it and
again with a confidence and like the the
support that I needed from people that
were in a higher place than me I guess
like people that I looked up to you like
Tim Westwood DJ Target all these people
I looked up to you and I spent some time
up in London
some stuff at the BBC who was literally
shadowing people that I looked up to you
at one point and I’ve always felt this
sense of urgency to come back to my CD
and build something because I felt like
there was a lack of infrastructure
ecosystem like there was so much talent
just know like platforms to put them on
and like do stuff so I thought I have
this idea like I have always had this
idea I just didn’t know what the idea
was and I needed something to trigger it
so as I was study studying I was halfway
through college and spending as much
time as I could in London bunking out of
like college you know yourself and I
thought if no one’s going to do in your
city why do you do yourself of it in
complaining so I went out of my way to
like start my own brand that goes by the
name of PHX and that’s like a music
platform movement music label kind of
thing and that’s all about just
showcasing like craves and Birmingham
because I feel like there’s so much
creatives like as you can tell there’s
so many amazing people that would mean
TED Talks today and there’s just no no
platforms but my fingers we can all do
something if you’re a teacher a doctor
we all have a part to play
we just don’t limit yourself as to your
social influence and you can all do
things and don’t be scared because I
thought like for so long something that
was holding me back was like being
scared
felt like I was scared for so long I was
like oh my god they come on Muslim girl
you’ve never seen this before oh my god
is Muslim girl yeah and I was like all
these people are always telling me oh my
god you’re so cool like how do you call
onstage with wrappers and stuff and feel
no way about like wearing a scarf and
stuff and I’m like it’s because I’m not
scared to be myself but for so long I
was scared to be myself and you have to
find yourself first and find your
purpose and it doesn’t like finding your
purpose takes time like people might
find their purpose at the age of seven
and some people will never find their
purpose and some people find their
purpose like mid mid 50s and I found my
purpose from like a young age and I knew
I was a social conscious kid like from
from young like I was challenging
society’s perceptions
just everything like
which is challenging and and that was
difficult for other people because they
were thinking why it’s wrong we just go
like why did she lost I’m and like like
yes everyone was like to me are like me
no you’re so sick this is that and I’m
like okay I’m sick but like I don’t know
what I’m doing I literally have no clue
as to what I’m doing I know I had this
knowledge of music and I know I know I
can talk for days and like let me just
incorporate that into a radio show which
are hosted like when I turn 16 I’ve got
a radio show in a local community radio
station and I bought through a lot of
like local artists or poets rappers
videographers directors everyone just
gave them a platform to showcase their
talents and I thought it’s so fun doing
a radio show but they’re gonna do after
and that was my bit to develop them
craves so I collaborated with SB TV on
all wants you on radio puppet radio
station on South bridges on the second
floor and that was amazing like we
brought so many people down like Daniel
Sturridge Mike Skinner and we
incorporated everything from not just
music but there’s four pillars is
everything and don’t ever feel like you
have to limit yourself and that’s my
thing I felt like I limited myself for
so long and now it’s like I understand
I’m powerful I understand I can do
things I just need to push myself and
strive for better but yeah literally
like all I want to say to you guys is
literally do your thing you’re all sick
you’re all talented obviously don’t be
scared I’ve said that like a hundred
times don’t be scared like be
comfortably in your own skin and your
story will help
inflight influence and inspire other
people as well so never feel scared like
no one knows what they’re doing like I’m
being serious like you might look at
your favorite rapper and your favorite
artists or favorite DJ or whatever but
they have zero clue as to what they’re
doing this everything just happens on
accident but that’s where the most
beautiful things are made so yeah I’ve
got I did this thing with SB TV was
amazing and then that was my the launch
of my platform that goes by the name of
bhx we feel partying we’ve reached
capacity of like 200 people and I was
like huh what
like I was gassed I was like no this
didn’t happen but so now it hasn’t sunk
in but I truly say to people don’t be
scared I’m not gonna stop saying don’t
be scared because like literally courage
like I had to build or discourage like
to do this like for so long I was scared
of being like a Muslim girl in the music
industry I’m not I’m still scared but
it’s like more of a now I’m in touching
myself I know what I can do and stuff
like that but I’m speaking to those
Muslim girls than black girls out there
that I scared to do what they want and
for like society limits them don’t be
scared
you’re sick you’re 9 love greatness only
