Humanizing Mental Illness | Cheryl Ngo | TEDxHomesteadHighSchool

my name and I and everything that has
led up to this point in my day has been
absolutely fine but I’m not the things
that I jerked off during that day come
right back and by this point I’m too
tired to fight it anymore 10k and this
is my – wearing on my face all day seems
to completely melt off and I have left
to wonder how much of it was actually
real 11 p.m. and my head is pounding it
seems like the words that I want to say
these days remain glued since tip of my
tongue
12 a.m. and all that stuff for me to do
was making sound but it was like I was
watching this horrible episode of my
life every play and I had no control
over what I was doing and so I sought
the answers to my crying the tips of
recently it made me feel like I finally
had some control over what was going on
but it was just a false sense of
happiness and I realized like this is
not the way that I was supposed to
handle it I had never gone to a point in
my life where my natural instincts were
colliding with the voices inside of my
kind of telling me that I wasn’t
thinking of and that I didn’t deserve to
be here there’s an eternal war brewing
beneath the surface of all of us and in
any war there are casualties on both
sides and in the end we are left to
wonder if all the pain and suffering had
been worth the sacrifices made in my
core I was both hero and villain and I
couldn’t kill one without also killing
the other and they watched as people
went through this and we had no idea
what to do and they always tell us to
seek guidance from friends from Family
but what happens when your dad is
working overtime to make ends meet
what happens when your mom comes home
after a hard day of work and you can see
the fatigue in her eyes yet she still
makes that cup of tea because she wants
to see me well what happened is when you
pass your counselor in the hallway and
she smiles gladly but know that she
doesn’t actually know your name what
happens when your friends are struggling
with their own ordeals and this would be
too much what do you do now
mental illness is a wide range of
conditions that vary from anxiety
depression PTSD schizophrenia bipolar
disorder and others it affects an
individual’s behavior thinking and mood
this is important to distinguish from
those with psychiatric disabilities
which involve organic brain damage and
mental disabilities in these types of
cases these individuals with prior
physical support in most cases to carry
out their daily life functions but the
issue today is that this stigma against
mental health is preventing those of us
with habit to seek guidance we engage in
what is known as social distancing mean
that we are isolating ourselves and we
are not seeking help we need to this
public stigma has led to the sort of
stuff stigma because we are into their
life in our own feelings and according
to dr. Frieden a psychic a psychiatrist
this undermines self-advocacy and needs
to a wide right type of attitude but
hinders any prospects of us getting
better but stigma is not the act of just
denying that exists stigma is being
unable to validate influence if I were
to call the school today
and tell them that I didn’t take you off
because I wasn’t feeling well what they
take me more seriously if I unschooled
that that I had broken my leg instead of
anxiety eating me unable to meet my old
room if I had told them that one of my
kidneys failed
instead of depression making me not want
to take my bed anymore
stigma is the idea that I put the need
to tell people that I’m just going to
the doctor instead of saying that I’m
going to the counselor because I’m
Sheldon what’s up partner the idea that
we can’t see touch or his feel momentous
illness directly feels the stigma but
this is not something that our society
can afford to balance every 100 minutes
one of us takes their own life
suicide is the third leading cause of
death in young people ages 15 to 24 and
one in five Americans have mental health
issues and this occurs for several
reasons that are not always crystal
clear they range from environmental
genetics like logical physical and other
factors that we don’t have any control
over but we’re seeing that in our
society today there’s this expectation
to be perfect and to pretend that
everything is okay even though it is it
from young age are already conditioning
to bring home these amazing grades that
our parents occasionally can on the
refrigerator and when we see our peers
get into these top schools and amazing
colleges while maintaining these perfect
grades all while creating a company and
volunteer and countless of hours we are
left to wonder if what we’re doing is
enough if we are enough and it’s not
like our parents need to make it feel as
though our grade
we are our authority figures note that
if we can’t keep up with the fast pace
of this world we are going to get left
behind and someone else will fill our
spot and the issues back with the
addition of Technology we lack the
coping skills necessary to endure this
we can put our entire lives on our cell
phones without other ones showing who we
actually are as people our humanity is
centered around things like love
compassion friendship individuality and
other aims but this can’t be done if we
don’t put our hearts out there if you’re
not willing to be vulnerable because
vulnerability is the stuff that
connections are made of and connections
is what drives our humanity but this
isn’t confirmation for the adults in the
audience to take away our cell phones
because this has occurred long before it
messed up before cell phones has come
out and it will occur long after this is
comparable to a cigar the cigar isn’t
the actual issue the issue is the person
chooses to smoke and overuse it and in
our case the issue itself is not the
cell phone it’s society’s expectations
and admirers of mental health issues and
the only way to really stop this is for
those of you out in the audience to be
able to sympathize with those effects
grab mental illness to empathize and
listen unconditionally and without
judgement
for a long time I have saw my parents
experiences as immigrants and the
standard in her appropriate tights it
would just it was so painful
to feel pain my mom had told me a story
when she was younger when this woman had
walked into my grandma’s shop holding a
knife that woman who was threatening my
mom’s life if she can’t give her money
and in all of this my mom held a rubber
ball that she put it between herself and
that woman and she stood her ground
until someone could help her and I
thought if my mom had this type of
strength encouraged why was it so hard
to look in the mirror why is it so hard
to stand up and throw a tissue away in
class why can’t I make it through a
single night without having anxiety
attack over what seemed like nothing but
by doing this I invalidated my own pain
and this just made everything worse
it made me feel like I wasn’t deserving
of my own emotion for that at my worst I
wasn’t deserving to be here but by
telling someone that you don’t deserve
to be sad because someone else has it
worse is I telling someone you don’t
deserve to be happy because someone else
has it better our experiences may not be
full but our suffering demands to be
felt and ultimately to truly stop the
stick like those of us who have mental
illness need to speak up
I was so sure that I wasn’t going to be
standing here today giving you guys
giving my story and share it and I’d
gone through I couldn’t make it through
the first page of my speech without
crying and the word cutting made me
flinch every time I said it aloud but
the more I had forced myself to write
these things down look in the mirror and
claim all my deepest darkest thoughts
the more control I was beginning to feel
over mine
in depression I began to open up I told
a close teacher of mine I have
discussions with my coaches and even
talked to people I didn’t normally talk
to but we’re willing to share their
stories with me and that is how we stop
this by humanizes the issue by telling
people what making them realize that
this is not just a mental illness as we
are putting a face behind what is
affecting us and it really is as simple
as this hi my name is Cheryl I have
anxiety and depression
I have a counselor I can go to whatever
I feel do it to self-harm again some
days are easier than others
but I’m taking it one step at a time
there are people I know who love and
support me and who want me to be well I
have mental illness and there are many
others with stories just like mine and
we are tired of saying that we are fine
these words left unspoken have come to
leave so many of us broken we can’t help
what we’re feeling we’re just struggling
to find meaning Abraham Lincoln he was
told that he had the saddest eyes yet we
started to believe that a man such as
him also cries Winston Churchill had
bipolar disorder manic highs and
all-time lows the mind has both a friend
and foe Walt Disney the creator of the
happiest place on earth also struggled
with his own self-worth he had
depression into the world I have a
confession I am tired of playing with
Ted there has to be more to life than
this dead a sitting in a prison I feel
like I’m holding my own key but I have
no idea where the lock may be but this
stigma cannot last if we have the
courage to stand speak up and let go of
these masks [Applause]
