How you can highly think of yourself? | Tanya Kathpal | TEDxJDMC

[Applause]
this is what I look like when I was 12
trying to look like Katy Perry fail this
is what I look like when I was 14 China
look like Angelina Jolie fail this is me
when I was 16 trying to be like Kate
Winslet disaster I must say I looked
hideous in all of those pictures and
this is really not normal for any child
that age I used to literally live on
Kellogg’s Kay for two meals a day so
that I could be skinny
I applied makeup before I went to school
every single day so I could hide my
pimples I wanted to be fair slim and
beautiful I did get a lot of acceptance
through my peers however I must confess
that I wasn’t a normal child that’s my
mother ladies and gentlemen and being
her daughter
Kamath a lot of pressure from the
society in general most of my relatives
were often comparing me to her and told
me that she was much prettier than I
ever could be she looks much older now
and that’s a very furry leaf the way
Beauty has been defined by media is
fixed and it is nearly impossible to
achieve millions and billions of boys
and girls around the world are told that
they need to look a certain way it
includes tall slim and fair for girls
and tall handsome and rugged for boys
and so many youngsters these days are
trying to live up to that image so that
they’re able to be accepted and liked by
their peers as having a conversation
with my best friend aria about a month
ago and I was telling her that what a
relief it is to not get back sing done
in winters she agreed and then she began
to tell me about this woman in
admiration who does not get her vaccine
or her upper lips done I asked her
why would she not she said who defines
that women are not supposed to have hair
and if they’re not supposed to have hair
then why do we have them at all
I had no answer in fact I still don’t I
want you to just look around this room
now just think about five people who
you’re close to imagine that four are
those five people you just thought of
suffer from low self-esteem 3/4 of the
world suffers from some degree of
lacking self-esteem and this is 9 out of
every 10 people in India
self-esteem and thinking highly of
yourself has become such a task for the
generation these days
so what is the self-esteem that I’m
talking about and how is it linked to
thinking highly of yourself self-esteem
is equivalent to self-worth plus self
competence to simplify it it means how
worthy do you think you are and how well
do you think you’re doing in your career
and education in general over the last
ban of two years I’ve interviewed
thousands of students and I call NFL an
astoundingly found a commonality between
what each one of them have to say all of
them believe or are the most of them
believe that they need to accomplish
much more in life than what they
currently have they all want to be more
confident than they currently are and
they’re all chasing the certain someone
or something called success do you know
these legends that we know of Angelina
Jolie man Lynne Monroe John Lennon Oprah
Winfrey they all suffered from low
self-esteem and did not think highly of
themselves but what differentiates them
from others is that they were able to
overcome that they too made both lots of
mistakes like all of us do however they
were able to overcome their inhibitions
and be who they are today and I have a
good news news for all of you you can do
that too you can change the way you
think about yourself and the world
around you that is something that can be
done but why do we need to do that at
all why do you need to think highly of
yourself why do you need to become a
better version of yourself because life
my friend is challenging it looked like
a tip see top seeker will go up and down
it’s not gonna be a straight line you
need to be able to think highly of
yourself so that you are able to be at
peace with yourself and you are able to
realize your truest potential I have a
fervent request for all of you
if you can just take five seconds and
compliment the person who’s sitting on
your right if you don’t have anyone
sitting on your right then just accept
the compliment coming your way and
whenever someone compliments you just
say thank you just don’t compliment
their clothes or their accessories you
can talk about their eyes nose please go
ahead lips and legs toes nails hair so
many times in life when we receive a
compliment we shun it away you look so
beautiful today or no you’re just being
very kind you’ve done an impeccable job
at this project perhaps I think it’s
because of so many people who helped me
to do this accept the compliment because
you deserve it so how can you start
thinking highly of yourself there are
these three ways that I figured out for
myself first love your skin there’s a
beautiful code by dr. Gayle dimes
if tomorrow women broke up and decided
that they really like their bodies just
think how many industries would go out
of business I still be really remember
this was some five years ago when I was
at a party this girl came to me and said
Tonya your fingers and fingernails were
a bit of fact I say what can our fingers
and fingernails to be fat to be fat I
said is that all that you’ve been
looking at when I look at it today I
realize that perhaps my fingers and
fingernails Anora slender as they show
in advertisements but I’m grateful that
I have them there is a general
perception world over that it is just
women who suffer from low low body image
and body dysmorphia however a growing
body of research suggests there are men
to suffer from low body image and low
self-image we expect our men to be
strong and we discourage them from
expressing any emotions which is why
they don’t
in the open and talk about the kind of
issues that they are facing I just want
to say that we cannot choose where we
are born and how do we look so it is
absolutely up to you do you want to
spend the rest of your life not
appreciating your own body love your
skin and I would like to urge all women
and men around the world to stop body
shaming yourself and others just love
your skin secondly laugh at yourself yes
laugh at yourself as in classics when
this boy called me up at 11 p.m. it was
one of my classmates I picked up the
phone he’s seen he said Tanya will you
be my girlfriend I didn’t know what it
meant at that age I didn’t know what to
say so I said okay that I mean it’s
that’s fine because I was like really
nervous and I didn’t know what to say
just moments later he said he was just
joking and I hear people laughing in the
background I felt it really hurt and
rejected at the tender age but today
when I look back at it and even in high
school me and my friends had a good
laugh about that incident that’s perhaps
one of the things but in life we all
face so many rejections that have so
much of power that can they can leave a
profound impact on how we feel and our
personality in general today I would
like to tell all of you to think about a
story or an incident that affects you
share it with someone you love and have
a good laugh about it life’s too short
to think too much or take yourself too
seriously be crazy and be foolish laugh
at yourself because they truly set you
free and is a sign of emotional maturity
thirdly don’t be yourself
yes you heard right I didn’t say be
yourself I said don’t be yourself who
are you tell me something about yourself
what is your purpose in life you don’t
have to design you don’t have to answer
these questions literally so you can
take a deep breath you don’t need to
answer these questions because who you
are today will not be the same as who
you are going to be a year from now I
read it somewhere that if you’re not
embarrassed of who you were last year
then you probably haven’t really grown
enough I still remember I was 18 and I
just entered University
I felt students my age were much smarter
than I was I was 19 and my insecurities
about myself grew even more I still
remember I had to start reading
newspaper for the first time for an
entrance exam I literally forced myself
into reading the paper for the first 40
days till I even started making sense of
the headlines hated it I was 20 when I
picked up my first non-fiction book to
read
I must have stared at the cover of the
book for almost a week before I even
read a page of that book today ladies
and gentlemen I’m a natural and avid
reader
my day starts and ends with reading news
on the app conversations with my father
are primarily about elections and
politics I also want you to ask yourself
one question that when is thinking
highly of yourself not justified and
when is it wiser to criticize yourself a
lot of times ask
low self-esteem makes us believe live
about ourselves it makes us believe that
either we are not capable of growing or
we cannot where we don’t deserve to grow
and just because we are so busy guarding
our own self-esteem that we are not able
to realize our potential
and not overlooking our shortcomings and
weaknesses you can be whoever you want
to be if I fall into the trap of being
myself I would have never dreamt of
creating a world that’s more inspired
informed and intelligent along with so
many young students around the world who
joined the movement don’t make this is
who I am and alibi for change and
learning I am a million different people
from one day to another I cannot define
myself because I am living my life one
day the one moment and one year at a
time so ladies and gentlemen don’t be
yourself be your better self if you can
love your skin laugh at yourself and be
your better self from now onwards you
would have increased your self esteem
it’s least a tad bit more change
learning growth fashion self-esteem
self-confidence they all stem from
within we all have this gift called life
for us to know how long for however long
we do don’t waste it
by not loving yourself and those around
you if you can truly admire
imperfections and imperfections of
others if you can love yourself and
think highly of yourself the world will
fall in love with your soul I’m going to
end this with one of my favorite quotes
in Hindi that really motivates me every
single day it goes like Cutco Kabul and
Aetna key heart of disabled a coup
d’etat MC cudoce key bata Terasaki ahead
which loosely translates to make
yourself so fierce and so strong that
god has to ask you what is your wish
before any destiny thank you very much
