How to Escape the Horrors of High School | Rubab Khan | TEDxYouth@OFS

so before I start my speech I have a few
very simple questions for you guys can
you please raise your hand if you’re
currently enrolled in the Ivy or you are
parenting a child enrolled in the Ivy
and can you please raise your hand if
you find it difficult or just wish that
it was banned okay
so a lot of us are enrolled in the Ivy
and a lot of us also wish that it was
banned so not to worry you’re in the
right place
because I’m going to be telling you how
to escape the horrors of high school but
you know what this high school program
that we are enrolled in called the
International Becker Bachelorette would
you believe that all these prestigious
universities Institute’s and rankings
they call it the best high school
diploma in the world and yet all of us
sitting over here just said that it’s so
difficult and some of us even wish that
it was banned so are all of these PhD
and masters graduates working on the IB
do they not realize that it is so
difficult for us do all these studies
and statistics which prove that Ivy is
amazing are they useless or are we the
ones missing out on something let’s take
a minute to think about that are we
actually just not doing it right maybe
but you know what first I have to admit
something today I really really like
math I mean you do this long three-page
equation and at the end you get this
answer I just find that so so cool but
you know what I always have to admit
something else I really really like art
I mean drawing creating painting it’s
just so much fun so when it came to
choosing my Ivy subjects I was obviously
going to go for H on math and HL art but
then I checked University requirements
and I talked to people and I found like
a huge surprise then math and art don’t
really go very well together I mean I
thought that was like taking an air con
to Antarctica which would not be very
useful and I don’t want to be a person
who does that so instead I saw it
how about HL physics
and a filmer and god that sounded just
so perfect HL physics any so math it was
just gonna be like the perfect
combination that any university would
just absolutely love and guys over here
i made my very first mistake of the IV
now how would you define a perfect
subject combination if i be really
thought that there was something such as
a perfect subject combination then they
would have created sets for us to choose
from but they haven’t because that
didn’t occur to them because they’re not
as smart as I am or maybe because
there’s no such thing as a perfect
subject combination and then I thought
that am I the only one who made this
mistake of going for perfection and not
choosing something that I actually
really liked so then I conducted a
survey for overseas family school
students and guys let me tell you I was
really really surprised when I saw the
results of it and before I tell you I
really want to know what you guys think
so please raise your hand if you think
that more than 50% of the students chose
the subjects that they were actually
passionate about and please raise your
hand if you think that more than 50%
chosen because of uni requirements well
you kind of gave the answer yourself
because over 60% of the students chose
their subjects because of university
requirements and other reasons rather
than because of their passion and this
was absolutely unbelievable I mean we’re
basically saying that we’re not gonna
listen to our parents when they tell us
to clean our room but we’re gonna listen
to universities when they tell me to
take HL physics and instead of HL art I
mean cleaning our room taking HL physics
right and I understand that we all may
not know what we want to do at the
beginning of IV so instead of starting
by hunting for perfection maybe we can
start by choosing what we like and this
way we will get we will actually get
somewhere that we’re meant to be not
some thing somewhere that’s perfect but
not really perfect for us and right now
I just spoke about the mistake that we
make before starting the IB let’s talk
about the mistakes we make after the IB
the first and
biggest mistake I think we make and the
reason why we find it so difficult is
because we don’t do things for what
they’re meant to be for my first example
is Cass for those of you who don’t know
what Cass says these are extracurricular
activities which let me quote the IB are
meant to provide a counterbalance to the
rigorous studies however most of us find
it a burden why because they’re too
heavy
no because we don’t we use them for all
sorts of reasons apart from providing a
counterbalance to the rigorous studies
the first reason why we don’t like Cass
is because we do it just because we have
to do it for example a friend of mine
put skateboarding as his activity now
please tell me that when in life or who
in life would give you credit for going
to the skate park every week literally
no one apart from the IB and then I
thought that why is it that we don’t
understand how much fun and how many
opportunities are there for us and cats
so again I did a survey and from the
survey results I found that 45% of us do
the I to the cast not because we
actually like the activities but because
we want to put them in our personal
statement and let me tell you a real
example of that so when three weeks ago
I got chosen for Ted and I was so
excited to tell my friends I don’t my
god I got chosen to speak at Ted and I
thought that they were gonna be like
that’s so cool it’s so interesting and
guess what the first thing my friend
said was oh my god that is gonna look so
good on your personal statement thank
God that that moment was like I was
assured that I’m giving the speech about
the right thing second example of when
we don’t do things for what they’re
meant to be for internal assessments the
whole purpose of internal assessments is
to explore how the subjects that you
have chosen can be applied to reality it
gives us an opportunity to step out of
the textbook world and actually explore
how what we have learned can be applied
in real life but instead we think of it
as a burden how many of us walk into the
math I a thinking
that oh my god dude all these equations
that I’ve learned throughout my life I’m
finally going to see how they’re used in
real life instead we all look like that
so guys my point is that our intention
of doing things is wrong and that’s why
there’s so much harder for us the flaw
is in our interpretation of Education
not education itself what we consider
difficult can as easily be turned into
something fun
so in conclusion enduring our marathon
of making things perfect we’re
forgetting to take a moment slow down
and reflect on our actions we are in
like a constant race of just putting
tick boxes and getting things over with
that we’re not even taking a moment and
seeing how fun or interesting the things
that we’re doing are and I understand
that in this rollercoaster of a ride
where things are I do every single day
it’s really really difficult to do that
but we have to and in my experience that
is a very very important key to
surviving the horrors of high school
because let’s be honest we’re just a
bunch of teenagers and we can’t really
change the system but what we can change
is our perception of it it’s like
talking about a diamond what gives a
diamond it’s worth is our perception of
it if we think of it just as a worthless
piece of rock thing yeah it is just a
worthless piece of rock similarly if we
think of education as a burden then yeah
it is just a burden so the next time you
walk into your math class I want you
looking something more like that see if
you look like that it’s gonna be so much
more fun I promise you that’s all [Applause]
