How Perception Alters Time | Dante Fagotti | TEDxYouth@ISF

yesterday I saw one of my friends that I
hadn’t seen in ages it was amazing the
world is so small right it just made my
day so much better has that ever
happened to you it brought back so many
memories back then it was all fun and
games I wish I could travel back in time
I wish those fun moments together had
never ended I’ve just taken up some of
your time precisely how much I’ve been
on this stage for 40 seconds initially I
was silent and then I spoke which part
took more time
or should I say which part seemed to
take more time I spend more time being
silent right wrong the reality is that I
spent an equal amount of time talking to
you as the amount of time I was silent
how’s this possible I fooled you that’s
why I controlled your perception of time
not talking to you made time seem to
pass more slowly
that’s nothing what’s happening I wasn’t
distracting you or attracting you in any
way instead when I spoke all of you were
listening to what I was saying and
enjoying yourselves at least I hope this
made time seem to pass faster for you so
what does this mean someone that is
enjoying himself it’s more likely to
perceive time accelerating whereas
someone that is hating the moment it’s
more likely to perceive time slowing
down why is this important the ability
to make time go faster is a critical but
underappreciated key to our quality of
life for example when we’re at school
time always seems to pass – now we are
bursting from the desire to learn and we
have the best timer alive
for all of us
we’re currently students it’s the
highlight of our day right wrong the
reality is that most classes never seem
to finish this leads to widespread
student despair it doesn’t have to be
this way though our attitude heavily
influences how we perceive time just by
participating more in life in general we
are speeding up our sense of time
simultaneously we are making our day
more interesting more engaging and more
unique let’s continue with the example
of making valuable contributions to the
class’s activities for some of us it’s a
struggle we have to push ourselves to do
it but the payoff is enormous I find
that a class is more interesting and fun
if I force myself to speak up and say
something intelligent another way we can
make time go faster is with their
emotions science has shown that emotions
like joy interest and excitement speeds
upwards perception of time therefore
being interested in a class will make
most classes end sooner this though may
be sometimes hard to do we don’t go to
school every day Apple II willingly what
I do though that allows me to have
positive feelings regarding school and
schoolwork is reflecting on the question
why am i studying as this year I’ve been
honored to start the IB program one good
reason is that I want attend University
the most important reason though is for
personal benefit I want to gain more
confidence in myself and in my abilities
this helps motivate me in my life with
short it’s time as most of you know we
don’t control everything that we do in
our life well we can always control
though is a perception of time this tool
which lies in each and every one of you
can make your life and experience that
feels like a lifetime
I encourage all of you from this moment
on to change your perception of time as
your quality of life will drastically
improve by the way then time just fly by
it did for me and it can for you thank
you
