How Long Hair Changed My Life | Mannat Malhi | TEDxOxford

Now, I am sure that each of us has passed that moment,
When you enter a commercial center, immersed in your ideas,
As you pass through the front of the shop, you can see a passing person who looks exactly like you.
Has the same clothes, the same hairstyle,
When you look at him, you discover that he has the same eyes, staring straight at you.
They are horribly familiar, because they are you!
But when you realize that you have seen your reflection, there is a part of you that does not fully accept this.
This is because our reflection is just a mirror image of our true selves.
We caught the truth in a picture. This is actually what we look like.
However, as research shows, most of us prefer to look at our image in the mirror.
We love it, just because they are familiar to us more. That is important.
We feel more comfortable with things that seem familiar to us,
Even though it does not look accurate or real.
So, this is part of a more complex issue.
The way we see ourselves, and our pictures of them, rarely correspond to how others see us.
More specifically, how we see ourselves in our minds, our personal identities,
Are partially captured in our external identities,
How does the rest of the world see us, and that’s important.
Because identity gives authority, access, and credibility.
In practice, in the United States of America,
Identity theft deprives the US economy of 41 billion dollars a year.
Open personalities, like Cardashians, whether you love them or hate them,
They were able to turn their identities into trademarks.
So, when we vote for a politician, or when we buy a product used by celebrities,
We support their identity.
Why? Because we are with them and put our trust in them.
So, not surprisingly, we spend a lot of our time
Think about who we are and what we would like to be.
However, a few of us have a thorough conception of our identities.
We may think we are looking at us in a certain way,
Or believe that our actions constitute the views of others about us,
But we can not really measure these effects.
This raises the question that we do not fully control our identities.
Another way of thinking about this,
We issue many automatic judgments when we meet someone.
For example, you are now looking at me,
In a moment, you have noticed the color of my skin, my accent,
I hope you have noticed the wonderful shoe I wear.
Which, to your information, has a golden brown color, and its British-Australian and Punjabi manufacturing,
It is (Geiger Cart).
All of these features contribute to the formation of too many links in our minds,
It is based on our own experiences.
So, that’s why advertising, social media
They are powerful engines of our thought.
More surprisingly, we rarely share these ideas.
Instead, people simply express themselves in superficial terms like “love” or “hate”.
In the light of the significant events of 2016,
I have begun to think more deeply about what others see when they look at me.
What is the basis of my identity?
Now, when I ask my friends what distinguishes me, they often say that it is my endless joke,
Or my passion for shoes, or fond of chocolate.
But what shapes the way most people see me?
Fears like a spit that extend to the middle of my back.
My hair long, because I simply never cut it, the reason for it is also clear,
Because I’m a skewer.
For those who do not know Sikhism, it is one of the world’s most modern religions,
Its origins date back to the north of Punjab in the 15th century, a province in India,
It is a religion that focuses on one God. He is immortal, no shape and invisible.
Therefore, the central practices of debt are to build discipline,
To instill trust and create a sense of service for one society.
You may be surprised if you know that it is the fifth largest religion in the world.
One of the main practices of this religion is not to cut your hair.
There are three main reasons for this.
First, the Sikhs believe that people were created as they were supposed to be,
Thus we respect our bodies when we do not lack our hair.
Second, the Sikhs want to be known;
We want people to let us know that we will help them when needed,
Our majesty and long hair immediately distinguishes us from those around us.
Third, the Sikh believes that by not cutting your hair –
Like not drinking alcohol, another skewer practice –
We instill discipline, and live in a more ethical way of life.
Ironically, I was born bald!
But, soon my hair grew, and after a short time, my hair became thick.
Now, before he went to school,
I never realized that this hair length was anything unusual.
At school, she quickly became known as “the girl with long hair,”
It was an attractive title, but not at the same level as the dragon tattoo,
Which may lead to writing a book or filming a Hollywood movie.
Another result of excellence was the questions.
The questions started when I was six and never stopped ever since.
“How long is your hair?”
“How long do you take to wash it?” “Have you ever had a story?”
The favorite question was, “Have you ever sat on it?”
Now, since I think you are all asking, I will answer you.
It takes 20 minutes to wash, but sometimes hours to dry.
I have never,
And of course, I sat on it!
In fact, it never went without sitting on it,
Causing my head to shake violently and yell, “Bully!”
(Laughter)
The reactions towards my hair were wonderful.
Most of my friends think it is beautiful,
Many teachers at my school were incredibly supportive of me.
This is important.
Because I was going to a church school uniform and non-sectarian,
Yet I was elected president, the most complex of societies, and I read the Bible.
No one, throughout my entire study, questioned the validity of my duties.
Some people, however, have found my hair responsive.
There is an incident engraved strongly in my memory
It happened when I was in the school camp, at the age of ten.
I was walking along the jungle path, when I grabbed a girl who was behind me with my braid,
As I turned to look at her, straight into the eyes,
I looked back and said, “Uh!
I felt as if someone was knocking me in the stomach, and I lost something in the meantime.
It was shocking that I was called a “stranger,”
But the pain is that I did not know this girl, in fact, I did not talk to her.
All I knew about me was that I had long hair.
Over my life, there have been many such experiences,
Which made me want to cut it from its roots.
As a little girl, I often stare at the mirror
I dream of a short, modern bob’s hair, or curly, short hair curls.
I dreamed of being just a girl, better than a girl with long hair.
One day, the opportunity came.
I was in the bathroom standing my hair combed,
When my mother came in and looked at me, she said, “You do not have to keep him, you know this.
You have reached the age that allows you to make your decision, and if you want to see it, do it. “
As a teenager I began to feel that my religion and my identity, and the physical expression of these ideas, were my decisions.
In a moment, I can change my qualities that you know me,
I can cut my hair.
Still, I did not bend to cut my hair.
Because I wanted to be known as someone who helped people.
If you need it.
I wanted people to see me as a person on a journey that instills discipline and becomes more honest.
With adolescence came additional pressure from peers to drink alcohol.
Now, I am Australian, Australians love drinking!
In fact, in Australia, drinking is more popular than swimming,
Perhaps more substantial in Australian culture.
The famous Australian phrase
From getting a drink while you are engrossed in a drink.
But, my parents, more concerned than ever, prepared me a set of excuses,
I am worried that I will not have the confidence to give an honest answer.
“Just tell them you’re driving.
Or tell them you’ve drunk enough to drink. “
However, by this point, I was not interested in making.
So, when I finished my school, I started telling people,
“I do not drink, nor cut my hair.”
But also demanded that they treat me equally.
Equality is the word used in many different contexts
But hardly carry any meaningful meaning,
However, it remains a concept of vital importance.
Equality is allowing individuals
In providing opportunities to show their lives and talents.
It is about recognizing that everyone
A complex organism capable of expressing all aspects of human emotion.
I want all my exotic features and recipes to be fully understood and appreciated.
I want to see that I am a unique young woman and that her experiences and abilities speak more about her
Of their color or the length of their hair.
In his 1984 novel, George Orwell warned of a world
Every concept is possible
Will be expressed only in one word,
All its sub-meanings will be erased and forgotten.
Each year, fewer and fewer words and the level of consciousness is always a little smaller.
Sure, I’m Sikh,
I have very long hair, but it is not my characteristic feature.
Because I am also bold, I like fashion,
I will happily live in the world of shoes (Louis Vuitton).
So, how did I change my long hair?
Well, I walk in (Oxford), I see people tattoos,
With a color of crazy colors and fashionable clothes,
These are just professors at Oxford!
But seriously, I see people
Who want to express their identities and sexuality,
They are understood and appreciated.
My long hair taught me that for some,
That there is struggle to expose their identities to the public,
For others, it is a special trip.
They are both equal and deserving of respect.
Each one of us reconciles with what distinguishes it.
In doing so, we should love ourselves,
But when someone else sees us, we should sculpt and accept him as he is.
We are all human beings.
We just need to be more human.
thank you.
