How Being Purposefully Minded Can Lead to a Better Life | Brodan Thiel | TEDxQuestU

when people find out I’m a masters
graduate in the field of positive
psychology and coaching they
automatically assume that I must be
living a happy fulfilling and purposeful
life the reality is I am to a certain
degree but only because I find passion
and giving back to the community Viktor
Frankl Jewish psychiatrist wrote one of
the most pivotal works in psychology
surrounding one’s meaning and life
Viktor was a survivor of the Ottomans
concentration camps in World War two and
he wrote those remember why to live
compared with almost any how adopting
these principles to my life I found that
when I have a why and I have a prayers
I’m able to achieve anything adopting
this philosophy I quickly ask myself
some questions why do I want to do
anything in this world what is my
purpose and what unique skills have I
been given and how am I going to go
about getting back to my community life
is about living not about surviving
therefore you must take every day as a
blessing and understand why we’re here
and how we’re going to give back to our
community ask people what makes them
happy you will get a thousand different
responses as we all live by different
ideologies philosophies and
understanding of how our happiness is
affected by our daily lives
research shows those who have pursued
goals that are meaning to them they
actually live happier lives and
therefore if like me one of your goals
is to pursue giving back to your
community it will undoubtedly lead to a
happier
more purposeful life Franco eloquently
wrote happiness cannot be pursued it
must be ensue and they only does so as
an unintended side effect of one’s
personal dedication to a cause greater
than oneself or as a byproduct of once
surrender to something to someone other
than to a person other than oneself in
2016
me and a friend were shooting hoops at a
court in Vancouver on a hoop with no net
we quickly asked ourselves a question
that we’ve been pondering many times
before this experience was not as
satisfying as it could possibly be and
we were asking why don’t the schools and
the community centers to put up nets on
their outside you see the problem here
lies in the fact that a successful shot
in basketball needs to be rewarded with
the sweet sound of the swish shooting on
a hoop with no net is just it’s not
satisfying and there’s so many the
problem here lies that there are so many
nets in Vancouver and community says
that actually don’t happen as long so
what we did was we went about trying to
fill this board for us that live by the
code ball is life we obviously don’t
want to shoot on these nets and so we
will travel far distances to shoot on
courts that actually do happen that’s
something when launching a campaign like
this is you need to understand that
people aren’t getting care about it as
much as you okay but it has to have an
emotional attachment to it
so therefore if you’re gonna do
something we knew something like this
you need to know that people are gonna
get impacted by it so putting over the
nest we knew that it would impact a lot
of kids and then it would bring
satisfaction to their lives we also knew
that with the amount of different
Basketball Academy zand opportunities
that
money that playing ball is actually
becoming far more expensive for parents
and in areas like East Van where we were
putting up these nets it wasn’t always a
great opportunity for the kids to go
into these academies because their
parents couldn’t afford it so therefore
creating these opportunities actually
gave them a means of enjoying basketball
and developing their skills we also knew
that the cities and the districts didn’t
really necessarily have funds or the
means to put these up it’s extremely
time-consuming and it takes a lot of
funds to do so so then we we decided you
know what we’re just going to do this
ourselves so we went out on a purposeful
journey setting out to here
you know kids swishing and one net at a
time changing our community in 2016 we
put up the first net the Vancouver
Technical School which is just in East
better this is a picture of it it’s my
buddy Kevin so basically people sorry go
back okay so this school isn’t in there
for a hundred years this is the first
time that there was a net put up on this
schools outside of court you may be
asking yourself why is there another net
there okay so basically the ribs are
made so you can’t attach an event to it
so we went about and we put up these
nets and it takes 30 to 45 minutes and
it’s very time-consuming and so what
happened was later that day after
putting up this net we quickly came back
in the night and we saw something that
changed our lives moving forward there
was five on five games going on
community was being built and people
were enjoying the court for the first
time in a long time
watching a campaign like this is not
easy it takes a lot of sacrifice and the
issue lies in the fact that people when
they want to do something they don’t
always know how to get started so when
starting this I was just finishing my
master’s degree
and as you guys know school is expensive
I was I had to take out $500 to fund the
first Nets and that bought 50 Nets I
then went out in the community and
started putting these up and as I
mentioned before it’s extremely
time-consuming not only putting them up
but traveling to the different locations
because we had to continue our daily
jobs and bringing in funds just to live
we also had to make sacrifices putting
these nets up at 12 o’clock at night
4:00 in the morning and sacrificing
sleep so time being a finite resource
when starting a campaign like this you
need to understand that it being worth
your time and having a lot of meaning to
you it has to be worth it because in
human existence we are currently the
busiest we’ve ever been and that’s by
choice so how do we go about getting
people involved finding the best that
needed help and all these other things
so basically what we did was we set up
an Instagram account with hashtag
solution mission kids would then go to
the Instagram that are going to their
Instagram post the next they wanted to
have Google soccer sorry the hoops that
wanted to have nets on and we were able
to go like Santa Clause throughout the
night put up these and give these kids a
present okay the first week of launching
our camp game we saw a great growth okay
30 kids put posts up on different
locations in Vancouver this created a
ripple effect throughout the community
and allowed a lot of other people to get
involved with the campaign in 2017 we
thought how can we make this campaign
even bigger we tied ourselves to two
different foundations that were close to
our hearts big brothers Canada when I
was younger I was a little brother when
big brother approached me to start the
big the purple net
project we knew that this was something
that we had to do this sparked swishin
mission going across Vancouver across BC
and then ended up being on commercials
from March Madness on TSN in this time
we were also featured on the front of
the Vancouver Sun and the province this
was a something that was dear to my
heart and I’m so thankful that I got the
opportunity to give back to big letters
another campaign that we were able to
work with was the no regrets nest which
is the quickies foundation and these two
projects funded the swisherd mission in
2017 2017 we were able to put up nets
from Chilliwack to secure in Squamish we
put up 350 nets in the community with
our different volunteers and our
different people driving around and
seeing the smiles that are on kids faces
because they have a place to play hoops
and to the joy and to shoot on is
something that I hold very dear to my
heart making people’s lives better is
the reason we’re here on this earth
finding out what your purpose is and why
you want to do something is so important
once you find out why you want to do
something and then you have the ability
to give back this is going to lead to a
more purposeful meaningful and satisfying life thank you very much
