[Applause]
hi guys I would like to dedicate this
talk to people that were affected by
earthquakes and also people that helped
us work during the earthquake and people
that are continuously working right now
to make changes that Nepal deserves
[Applause]
well when I said earthquake moved me
it not only moved me it moved families
it moved children it moved you know
everything that was down at Nepal at
that time the devastating earthquake
created fears and terrors and people’s
mind and people were hopeless it
destroyed the buildings that we had the
monuments that lasted for a hundred of
years and April 2015 the devastating
earthquake hit Nepal with magnitude of
7.8 and I knew it was not a good news
for us because eighty years ago in 1932
Nepal was hit by another earthquake with
the same magnitude that killed over
10,000 people and I knew the aftermath
will be absolutely shocking for all of
us so when I heard the news I started
calling everyone that I knew back in my
country and no one was answering their
phone and I got talk and I had a chance
to talk to my mother and my mother said
the earthquake trapped your grandfather
is well now at that point I had no idea
how to react I was hopeless I was
helpless but she then told me the
villagers managed to rescue him after
and he was safe although he was safe it
was a sleight of sight of relief I could
not stop thinking about the millions
view of people whose life was affected
by this earthquake so I saw news I saw
Facebook’s I saw tweets it was great in
creating awareness but not much action
was taken the government themselves were
not helping the people so I phoned my
grandfather and he said I’m hopeless I
think I may not see you again at that
point my grandfather is the only person
that I look up to for motivation and
seeing him losing hope made me feel like
I should be responsible for helping on a
devastating period like this so what I
did was I talked to my mom and my dad I
told him I’m going to Nepal
now the aftershock of Nepal earthquake
when hundreds which means it kept going
every week and more people were dying on
each of the aftershock when I told my
family they had no idea how to react to
it but then I told my friends and they
also were really scared for me but then
I had my best friend best friend for 12
years you know his name was a spoon and
he said to me dude if you’re going with
me I’m gonna go with you because I’m not
gonna allow you to die on that place by
yourself that time I was looking for a
support and I had a team with me you
know so what we did was we set an
emergency meeting and we got the whole
Nepalese society’s India Society’s
everyone to gather in one room and when
we proposed him the idea that with me
and him wanted to go no one liked it
they said you guys are too young you
guys don’t have the relevant experience
you guys are mentally ill mentally weak
physically weak and ‘she’s was really
discouraged I took him to the corner and
I said look at the people sitting in
this room there are presidents vice
presidents of different posts for them
it’s just partition you and me we want
to act you know and that’s what the
people need right now so I told him
don’t think about them don’t think about
you and me think about millions people
that we can lose live with in Chains and
I said when I said don’t think about me
don’t think about him and the millions
people he just looked at me saying so
what do you think about and I said about
the people about about what you can do
do you believe you can go there and make
changes if you do come with me if not
let it be so I went back to the room and
I told them I know you guys may think
will be a burden I know you guys may
think the flight money that can be used
on that earthquake could be used for you
know the earthquake victims which I
agreed with that I said you know I’ve
been saving up for my masters and I’m
gonna use the money that I’ve saved for
my masters to travel the flight money’s
food money’s everything will be used for
my Master’s money and anything left and
anything donated will be spent directly
to the earthquake victims now no one in
the room
say no to us that was the time few
people came and said you know what let’s
focus on this voice let’s see if we can
help them out okay so we started
fundraising you know we started with two
people we had a massive team we are
talking about Nepalese flag waving all
around Edinburgh we are talking about
Nepalese Gorkhas you know Street
Nepalese Gurkhas and Street collecting
funds we’re talking about my football
boys during backpacking and morrison’s
we’re talking about my guys doing
football tournament dance tournaments we
made phone calls to different people we
were phoning everybody and the only
message was Nepal was not alone and
you’re gonna help us you know within a
few weeks of this hard work we managed
to raise fifty nine thousand pound you
know and the money was not what
motivated us obviously it was great
because we could do so much with that
money but when we managed to get that
funding we said to each other what are
we going to do with it and I said we’re
going to go to Nepal work on the most
difficult areas that government have
neglected so we had a team we flowed
over to Kathmandu we looked down it was
like a summer base camp everything was
tent everything was a plain playground
from the helicopter so when we got off
the plane and then we walk we got a taxi
from airport to my home all the streets
and the neighborhood place that I used
to walk in was not same anymore it was
literally just a plain playground rather
than thinking much we decided just to
sleep because we were so tired we were
knackered it was too much for us and
when we were sleeping at middle of the
night there was the strange noises that
was coming from the background where
they said IO IO IO which pretty much
translates in my language it’s coming
it’s here so we had no idea what it was
we open our eyes the last thing that we
can think we felt was the shake of
earthquake in the own building that
we’re living on so we all ran outside
the building and apparently it was
really common for aftershock to come
every night and to take more people so
rather than sleeping me and him decided
to walk down through the roads and see
how the country was surviving you know
you were talking about everyone’s
on the 10th people sleeping Justin
streets and the crime rate went a lot
higher people’s house were getting
vandalized people sleeping in streets
were getting attacked the rescue workers
were getting the rescue Metro snatched
because everyone was hungry they wanted
something people he uses alcohol and
drugs as a mean to ease pain and renew
country was in a lot of trouble and we
better start acting right there so the
following morning we made our
volunteering coordinator and I said to
him we are going to go to places that
you have not took anyone we are going to
places that the government have not
reached and he said you guys are from UK
and you guys should probably settle down
with the area first I knew and I said
we’ve got a lot of money and if you’re
not gonna take us there we’re gonna take
this money to somewhere else and do the
project because we came here to make the
change we did not came here to disappear
on this crowd so without thinking we
work on 12 different projects and today
you know I’m not gonna go and talk about
all 12 projects I’m gonna talk about two
projects that literally change the way I
thought about life the way I perceived
life okay the very first project project
ballgown now this place was really
isolated because it was really far from
cities and government did not have time
to get there so when we phoned them they
said please bring us any kind of food
materials anything that kid that he can
help us because we don’t have
electricity or anything and I said fine
let’s take a truck full of rescue
materials that can help them so we took
a truck there and and during that time
you know looking at all the volunteers
there was a girl called Rosa and she
said she really wants to go on the trip
with me and I said why’d are you not
helping on your local city right now and
she said she’s not allowed to help
because she’s a girl you know and I said
and what did you say back to them and no
matter what I said they will not allow
me to go because my father would stop my
brothers would stop because I’m just a
girl and I want to prove I want I want
to take care of my country at this time
like just like everyone did so us coming
from UK with the same kind of mentality
where no one believed that I said you
know what you should go with us so we
took her with us and women to ballgown
which was absolutely one of the worst
places that I’ve seen and you know there
was no houses nothing to live on so we
formed the villages and we said we’re
coming very far from this place I would
really appreciate if you can get your
village people to collect some of the
materials because from without chalk
stop we had to walk for further five
hours so they brought children’s they
bought old woman they bought they
brought all these ill people and I was
like where are all your young people
people with strength and they said most
of them have fled the country for
education most of them have fled the
country for work and most of them have
migrated and we were left here by a lone
hopeless you know so we didn’t say
anything we said let’s go with that we
be together rescue materials we slept up
during the night the morning we woke up
and we said I said to us I I said to I
think mr. kiss or I said this place does
not have any home and he said no they
all live in the same tent because the
entire village is wiped out the only
survival kits that we have is the tents
that we bring out here so the first
thing for me was to get the solar panel
installed so what we did was we install
solar panels on a few parts of the
villages so they can contact their
children’s that were away in different
countries saying what board with
situation then the clean water was
really essential so we started building
water tanks in different parts of the
villages and then personal hygiene was a
big issue so we were building toilets
and during that time while we were doing
all this work the girl Rosa that no one
believed on she were went around giving
motivation playing with children you
know taking the traumas out out of their
head and also giving first rate
treatment to so many people and for me
she was the best volunteer that I’ve had
worked on for years and I said you
should go and take these photos and show
it to your people that did not believed
on you and why this project was so
useful so having said that done a lot of
work and we left Bagram and the people
had a lot of hopes but for me I was
really scared for that village because
they needed help all the time and if
there was no help
there was no survival so I went back I
used my social media and I told all
about this village
and I just prayed you know people more
people will turn up and go to this
places but my second project that I’m
gonna discuss to you that really touched
me is forge a Gurkha
okay so this is where Arthur could
really started okay this is the place
where government neglected for six days
with no communication no support
whatsoever on the sixth day the
government decided to drop backs of rice
and bags of noodles through the
helicopter because it was too risky for
them to go so I said that’s the place I
want to be in so when I phoned the
headmaster I was expecting them to say
loads of bags of rice oil salt all this
thing that they need and he phoned me
and he said Manish if you’re serious
about coming here bring down stationary
materials bring them desk and benches
because that’s what our students need
right now we do not want your food
materials I was really shocked at this
point because I thought everyone needed
food for survival yet they were so much
worried about the education so without
asking anything I took the measurement I
designed the whole desk myself and we
talked we took two trucks filled with
this all stationary materials to go cab
so I told my friends I was like we’re
really screwed because we have two big
trucks and we’re gonna have to carry
this for hours guess what we didn’t the
truck actually stopped right next to the
school and I was really surprised and
the headmaster came down and he and
Annie greeted me and I said I thought
your village was massively affected and
he said yes it was but did you not read
the news the government neglected us for
six days we don’t rely on people here
all my students here all all all the
family that you see here we work every
day we’re doing agriculture so you’ll
see it all tomorrow take a rest and then
I I was I was basically having dinner at
this place full of students and I said
what is this place about and you know I
think I should be able to point it out
okay I said what is this place all about
and he said well this place that you see
right here these children don’t have any
fathers and mothers they have nothing
but us but they want to study and they
have been schooling 87 80 80 percent
under exams and we don’t want them to
you know discourage
their education so they were providing
free food free education on times like
this and now making sure all children’s
were getting their type of education so
the morning I was sleeping I was really
tired and then the headmaster knocked
and said we really need to go and I said
hey listen it’s Molly five o’clock and
he said we need to go and then I walked
with him and I said are you I might not
gonna teach this school and they said
yeah and then when I went to school I
was really surprised because you had
people that were six years seven year
old staying in school about to start and
I said what is this all about
and if you see the photos and this one
here the reason why I had what we have
to study school at six o clock was
during the daytime the Sun will heat and
the student would not be able to cope
under the deep heat so they basically
told us this is the only time we can
teach them so the children were walking
for two three hours and then getting the
studies at 6 o clock in the morning that
really made me reflect my life that I
had in UK and those children that was
six seven year old so you know after we
finished helping the school the head
teacher had a schedule he made all of
his you know carry all the rescue
materials he may email all of his be
part of building schools and then he
also said we should hit him to
agriculture now so the entire villages
were developing itself without you know
relying on anyone and I was there I was
planning to be there for two days my
team left and I said you know what I
want to stay here for another eight days
I’m gonna stay here for ten days
I’m gonna finish project Gorka and I’ll
come back and we didn’t end this we’d
literally change the shape of entire
village we we got in contact with
different organization that helped us
and the reason why I had to compare BOGO
and project Gurkha we do is not to show
you know how hard work it was but for
you guys who for me to reflect on a
village that was left hopelessly and
their only hope was people and more
funding while the second village that
was affected a lot worse
they decided to act they said we’re not
going to allow you to tell us you’re not
going to allow the government to tell us
what’s gonna happen with our future now
children okay so talking back into the
context you know I want to ask a
question to the people in this room how
many of you in this room have been told
you can do this because you’re either
too young you don’t have the relevant
experience you’re not mentally ready
physically ready I just want like shove
of hand in this room if anyone had that
kind of experience exactly and why do we
allow them to create limitations you
know the decision that we make here does
not affect the people that tells you
what you can do so why allowed them to
decide our future I’ll give you a really
good example of one of the kid who I was
falling during the whole time and I was
talking to him it was 7:00 we had a lot
of good chats and I said what do you
want to be when he grew up man and
obviously he said in the fleece okay is
a translation and he said I want to be
like my teacher so I could help others
to have education now this is the kid
that used to get up around 5:00 in the
morning come to school study go home and
and he you used to put on repeat you
didn’t allow any of his parents or
anyone to tell you what you should be
doing it was set in his head this is
what he wanted to do and you know out of
the whole talk there’s one thing that I
want you to take out from today is
because background experience in a
barrier should not be limit to what
you’re capable of
see if I allow the people that said I
can’t do it if my best friend a lot of
the people that I said that they said we
can’t do it nopal project would have
been impossible you know I’m standing
here at the capacity of your future like
president that would have been
impossible I’ve graduated from competing
every time people say no to me I always
said you know my friends used to say
Monisha I can’t do it and I said find a
ways to do it because those people that
are discouraging you those people that
are pulling your leg they are not going
to be part of this life anyway you know
are you really going to tell your
children really proudly that this is the
dream that you want to pursue but you
didn’t do it because you’re too scared
because you’re gonna have to have a
children tomorrow and they will have to
have the dream that they want to follow
on but
they’re gonna have the same mentality
because you have the same mentality you
know everyone in this room the only
limitations that should be with use your
mind anything is possible and that’s
what that seven-year-old whole year old
kid and Nepal earthquake taught me thank
you
[Applause]
hi guys I would like to dedicate this

you know discourage
their education so they were providing
free food free education on times like
this and now making sure all children’s
were getting their type of education so
the morning I was sleeping I was really
tired and then the headmaster knocked
and said we really need to go and I said
hey listen it’s Molly five o’clock and
he said we need to go and then I walked
with him and I said are you I might not
gonna teach this school and they said
yeah and then when I went to school I
was really surprised because you had
people that were six years seven year
old staying in school about to start and
I said what is this all about
and if you see the photos and this one
here the reason why I had what we have
to study school at six o clock was
during the daytime the Sun will heat and
the student would not be able to cope
under the deep heat so they basically
told us this is the only time we can
teach them so the children were walking
for two three hours and then getting the
studies at 6 o clock in the morning that
really made me reflect my life that I
had in UK and those children that was
six seven year old so you know after we
finished helping the school the head
teacher had a schedule he made all of
his you know carry all the rescue
materials he may email all of his be
part of building schools and then he
also said we should hit him to
agriculture now so the entire villages
were developing itself without you know
relying on anyone and I was there I was
planning to be there for two days my
team left and I said you know what I
want to stay here for another eight days
I’m gonna stay here for ten days
I’m gonna finish project Gorka and I’ll
come back and we didn’t end this we’d
literally change the shape of entire
village we we got in contact with
different organization that helped us
and the reason why I had to compare BOGO
and project Gurkha we do is not to show
you know how hard work it was but for
you guys who for me to reflect on a
village that was left hopelessly and
their only hope was people and more
funding while the second village that
was affected a lot worse
they decided to act they said we’re not
going to allow you to tell us you’re not
going to allow the government to tell us
what’s gonna happen with our future now
children okay so talking back into the
context you know I want to ask a
question to the people in this room how
many of you in this room have been told
you can do this because you’re either
too young you don’t have the relevant
experience you’re not mentally ready
physically ready I just want like shove
of hand in this room if anyone had that
kind of experience exactly and why do we
allow them to create limitations you
know the decision that we make here does
not affect the people that tells you
what you can do so why allowed them to
decide our future I’ll give you a really
good example of one of the kid who I was
falling during the whole time and I was
talking to him it was 7:00 we had a lot
of good chats and I said what do you
want to be when he grew up man and
obviously he said in the fleece okay is
a translation and he said I want to be
like my teacher so I could help others
to have education now this is the kid
that used to get up around 5:00 in the
morning come to school study go home and
and he you used to put on repeat you
didn’t allow any of his parents or
anyone to tell you what you should be
doing it was set in his head this is
what he wanted to do and you know out of
the whole talk there’s one thing that I
want you to take out from today is
because background experience in a
barrier should not be limit to what
you’re capable of
see if I allow the people that said I
can’t do it if my best friend a lot of
the people that I said that they said we
can’t do it nopal project would have
been impossible you know I’m standing
here at the capacity of your future like
president that would have been
impossible I’ve graduated from competing
every time people say no to me I always
said you know my friends used to say
Monisha I can’t do it and I said find a
ways to do it because those people that
are discouraging you those people that
are pulling your leg they are not going
to be part of this life anyway you know
are you really going to tell your
children really proudly that this is the
dream that you want to pursue but you
didn’t do it because you’re too scared
because you’re gonna have to have a
children tomorrow and they will have to
have the dream that they want to follow
on but
they’re gonna have the same mentality
because you have the same mentality you
know everyone in this room the only
limitations that should be with use your
mind anything is possible and that’s
what that seven-year-old whole year old
kid and Nepal earthquake taught me thank
you
