From the Gutter to the stars | Bjorn Tagemose | TEDxLiège

[Applause]
year ago I just finished the premiere of
gutter Dameron I think the project that
is probably led me into this fabulous
community and allowed me to speak today
and I’m standing in front of the Opera
House and they’re performing Norma and
it’s one of the most epic operas ever
performed performed by the most epic
rock star of opera Cecilia Bartoli and
I’m watching this stream of wealth
passing by I see Bugattis in Ferraris
and I see million-dollar dresses and
there are all these fabulous couples and
I’m so blown away by all the wealth
going inside at the premiere that I
forget to go in and myself so I entered
the room and there’s this whole crowd
staring at me just like you’re staring
at me right now and I’m the worst
dressed guy in the room and I’m sort of
out of place but I have a very big smile
on my face because at that point I
realized actually that why I had to come
there and and I realize I pulled
something off that I had set for myself
a certain target and what that target is
I’ll I’ll explain you later after giving
you two or three case studies of how I
reached my point in life and reached the
point that I actually wanted to be my
speech called from the gutter to the
stars my projects called gutter damn
room it has a lot to do with a good
feeling and let me talk to you about a
few people that I think excel in that
part
apart from mrs. Sylvia Bastardly of
course which I will explain to you so
the first story brings me to Berlin and
a guy called Carl Heine’s Miller who is
at that time I think also pretty much a
rockstar in fashion because in ten years
time this guy who started with weed
smoking skateboarders in
we managed to beat the Pratap birthday
Fashion Fair by becoming the biggest
fashion Fair in the world so this guy
was a street dog who actually went from
zero to hero and made Berlin really the
most important fashion capital in the
world he’s the guy who really puts that
little thing in motion there and
karl-heinz tells me I have a problem
beyond because I have a hundred thousand
people coming to my fair and I’m I’m a
bit confused on my what’s the problem
and he says I have become the
establishment and I don’t want to be the
establishment I want to be the street
dog and you’re gonna help me be the
street dog again so that’s something
that didn’t shock me I was sort of no
wasn’t surprised about that question or
that assignment well which shocked me
most was that Karl Heinz told me I have
between half a million and million euros
you’re gonna make a show for me and I
will see you the night of the opening
and he goes out of the door that’s a
lasting I see of Cal hein so I’m like
completely knocked out by the gut of
this guy why does he put so much
pressure on me and I get immediately
when Cal Hines leaves the room I have
all these politicians who have become
kind of corporate in this big company
being really scared because the big boss
is gone and you know strike the Shepherd
and the sheep will scatter and
everybody’s like we have to do with this
and that insistence so I’m ending up
with this Fair where they’re used to
doing these these classic EDM DJ things
where people are drinking champagne it’s
all really boring and there’s a lot of
boots on the fairground and I think like
you know how I’m gonna take these people
by surprise and I put a stage in the
middle that looks like one of these boot
bits staged with a black clot in front
and up in the air where nobody is really
watching I put a few screens like these
so I surround the people with screens
and when they’re actually sipping their
cocktails they start to notice there is
weird characters like this little guy
starting to talk around them and there’s
this movie going on and the whole thing
explodes in the end into something
people didn’t expect
show you the result of that not just the
last two minutes so you have an idea
hold the bar legally just woke up you
know what too happy he got his hands on
some sweeties rock’n’roll gunpowder to
start the new owner
[Applause]
[Music]
so I think in about seven minutes I
turned this boring cocktail party into a
bunch of stages that I’ve in crazy
and I thought I was pretty
interesting because I had underestimated
a diol the audience I mean I thought the
show would go well but I didn’t think
they would do that
so Cal Herr Heinze he learned me this
really good lesson he said if you give a
lot of responsibility to somebody you
trust and you let him be despotic and do
his own thing and work from the gut he
will perform under pressure
so Cal Hines knew exactly what he was
doing when he left the room that night
and that makes him an unbelievable
person that I still respect a lot the
next story is about a small DJ at the
time around the Millennium in Holland
and the guy the management of this guy
is inviting me to Holland and saying
okay we have this question for you
because you’re making all these rock
shows and stuff and the DJ in front of
me is saying I am going to ask you to
make a rock show for me and I want to be
the first DJ who becomes a rock star
with a private jet and and a crowd
watching me like the Rolling Stones so
I’m again staring at him like you are
staring at me like how is this record
player player gonna pull that off but
I’m thinking like this guy has a lot of
guts to do that and and and and he’s an
interesting person so I tell him okay
you’re coming from the world of trance
and painted persons in dancers in fluor
colors and half-naked girls in Ibiza
you’ll have to find something else to
shock people or use to drugs and
nakedness and maybe you should do just
the opposite let’s make an art piece and
you’ll play trance to an art piece and
we’ll take all these dancers from
Greenland the guy Busan and at today’s
at the cash market and all these arty
people are really muscular instead of
voluptuous and we’ll make this art piece
and we’ll just project it and his
management goes berserk because they’re
like they’re not gonna get it in their
drug heads and you don’t know this
audience and they don’t know they’re
they don’t get it they don’t get art
it’s not gonna work
but justo is looking at me saying give
this guy a break man let’s do this
so Tito is the name of the little DJ and
of course he has his private
right now and gesture with me you know
like we take this show together with
that whole creative crew that worked on
it because it’s a lot of people working
on it not only me or the DJ and we bring
a big back of cloth to Kovich Ella in
America where everybody only listens to
rock and roll at that time and the red
chili peppers are playing and people are
telling us you know electronic music
it’s European it’s for Berlin and you
know it doesn’t fit in America because
we’re rock and roll and we’re like yeah
we’re just the after act we’re just you
know we just put our cloth after the
radio Chili Peppers so we just have a
projector a big cloth but people
underestimate the power of a 100 square
meter projection screen when there’s
some imagination on it because it’s not
about how big the bells ring it’s about
what’s on the screen so we play the show
and sure enough people go nuts and the
day after in the New York and LA Times
nobody talks about the Chili Peppers
anymore they’re all talking about DJ
Chester who conquered America and I
think it was the beginning really of the
first big EDM shows in America and now
in Vegas and in all the big festivals
like our chilla the majority’s idiom I
don’t like idiom but I like people like
Tiesto he had a lot of good at the next
project again is a building stone that
leads me to gutter damn room to show how
I came to my own project it’s very
different it’s a fashion project I think
you’re all familiar with people like
Claudia Schiffer or Naomi Campbell or
Gisele Bundchen it’s all people who
actually did a beauty pageant for Elite
Model Look and the difference with a
little luck is when you are an elite
model it’s not like Miss World where
you’re under flowers and you go home and
it’s over no when you’re on a lead model
winning this contest you are a
multimillionaire before you walk out
because you are really a top model and
this brand had gone through a few bad
times with scandals and stuff like that
but then they had a very visionary new
guy working there Vickey an old friend
of mine who calls me and says I want you
to make a show that reflects where I
want to take you lit which is the Chanel
of the model agencies and what we want
to be back on top and we go to China and
I go through the whole process again of
people telling me how it’s done and you
need
liking the voice you need to crime
people on the scene and and a real
Baroness talking to the girls and
hugging them and then there’s emotion
and it’s gonna sell and I think it’s a
load of crap
so I tell them like no we’re gonna make
not a straightforward white catwalk
where people walk we’re gonna make it
linear we’re gonna make a long line of
120 square meters of protection cloth in
three layers and we’re gonna make this
holographic long thing and instead of
putting them on velvet we’re gonna put
the girls and bare concrete and you know
happily there was a very interesting
team at elite laurels bien and Stefan
are two amazing people who let me do my
thing and we do the show and the show
worked out really well
we had an electronic voice like a bit
like the Daft Punk team in the intro
here who became the host instead of this
beautiful Baroness and the show ends
really well and Vic is really relieved
but he’s not relieved yet because inside
the crowd on the leather seats in front
right here is the most important lady in
fashion fashion franca Susanna who
passed away allows but who was an
amazing person an amazing girl just like
Cecilia Bartoli and she she looks at me
and of course he noticed because of the
way I’m dressing I’m the least risk eye
in the room again that I’m the director
so she gives me a blink of the eyes that
go straight to Vic and she says she was
Italian every year the show looks like
and Vic is like becoming really
small and then she’s like but this year
it was amazing and it was a big party
and the year after
Elite Model Look got endorsed by Italian
Vogue and you know it became a very big
brand through this vision and the gut
feeling of Vic who in the end is the guy
we’d get here and it brings me again to
the next one
gutter Dameron which is my own project
and I am thinking okay how can I take
all these things from Cal Hines Miller
the stray dog who went from the gutter
to the stars how can I learn something
from Tiesto who knew that the
is hungry for something else when people
are always fed the same after a
while they don’t eat anymore so you have
to do something new and I’m a big rock
and roll fan I’m thinking why is you
know like Iron Maiden still using cloth
backdrops like in the 70s it’s boring
but there are no other great amazing
acts out there about at that time at
least you know you have a few like
Rammstein who were really amazing for me
big examples but I’m thinking maybe
should blend this idea of EDM of
holographic stuff of bringing a
technological aspect into an old-school
rock and roll factor so there’s again a
lot of the septa sysm of people telling
me the rocker friends of mine was saying
nobody’s gonna get the art people and
the people who work for the Orang do the
graphics making a rock and roll movie
but they totally underestimated their
audience because in metal you have
beautiful artwork you know deviant art
in metal is something amazing I think so
I took some Gustav DeRay so Midgar Allan
Poe I took some you know artists from
Chanel and I took my knowledge from all
these shows and I went to speak to my
friend Grace Jones so I made a few shows
for her and I knew she would get it she
said she’s an art icon she’s been a lot
of museums around the world she’s a
living art work just like Iggy and I
explained her that and she thinks it’s
great and I play her Slayer and she’s
like oh it’s tribal so she totally loves
it and it ended up in something I will
show you like people thought I wouldn’t
be able to convince anybody but this is
the cast that I had in the intro I’ll
just play you a short trailer of guitar
damn room
[Applause]
mr. miss Grayson Jones Iggy Pop Joshua
hub / Mark Lanegan Jesse James the
Slayers Tom arrived the most epic cast
in rock and roll history
starring Henry Rollins Justice Nina
Hagen and we’ll be in Bjorn taga mooses
gutter camera an explosive cinematic
show accompanied by a live rock and roll
band in the meantime put it really right
let me when I met him I think half a
year before he passed away he was a very
clever guy and the way he dressed nobody
thought he would understand opera or
anything like that is let me was really
the living example of how you can be a
super intellectual and make people
believe that you’re not and I think he
told me at a certain point like you know
this show is gonna be like playing motor
it in the Opera and people are gonna
love you or gonna hate you for it but
you just have to follow your gut ‘no and
you have to do what you want to do and i
Tom Araya from Slayer is also some of
the you know I think one of the most
important metal artists again said the
same thing you have to take your guitar
get in the van and do it man so I just
did it and I ended up with 12 of the
biggest rock icons ever put together in
a movie and I took him out of the
perspective where they’re normally in I
changed them into silent movie stars
rather than having them shout onstage
and I had a beautiful unbelievable opera
singer on my stage performing with us
and that brings me back to the auto
Cecilia Bartoli where I actually also
had cataloged her a little and by the
crowd was in the room and it made me
understand and I tell her like you know
I think I know why you brought me here
and she says yeah you know like you just
created a rock opera and I like metal
because metal is complex music just like
old music it’s very difficult to play
when you listen to master donor Slayer
it’s virtuoso stuff you know and she
understood that really well and she said
back in the days when old music was
played in theatres furnaces they used to
blow up ships and make big fireworks
just like Rammstein so opera were the
opera singers of those time were the
rock stars of that time and Wagner in
that time
was the first guy understood that the
visual aspect of a show is just as
important as the musical aspect and I
think what all these people have in
common including all these people in the
movie is something my little 909
year-old girl has when she was 4 year
old she was in the car with my wife and
we’re playing list for life no I think
we’re playing wanna be your dog from
Iggy Pop and she says to my wife can you
turn on the radio and drive faster mom
and I think that puts it all together I
hope my girl will have a lot of good
feeling and I hope you got inspired by
whatever I had to say tonight thank you
very much
