Failure and Vulnerability | Rosie Leizrowice | TEDxPrioryAcademyLSST

[Applause]

so my name is Rosie and I’m a writer

which is a career path I chose light

snow that played back and I first

started to write and like a lot of

writers I end up spending a substantial

amount of time writing and thinking

about the active writing itself and

there are 38 concepts like motivation

inspiration and in particular creativity

which is usually a way to avoid what I

should be writing and thinking about and

a while back I was studying English

literature and spending all my time

other people’s writing another

consequence I didn’t how much time to do

my own writing and doing this was kind

of for me to lose my mind

because I was faced with the choice

between continuing on the comfortable

path I was on between striking up my own

to rightful time risking probable and

sanity isolation and like campus equally

logical people before me I went for the

last a choice but as I made that

decision

I found myself asking why do we do this

what separates the people increase

fields can give up with a certain

pursuit than those who don’t

what’s the difference between people who

do everything to affect his task and

people who quit the first time in their

work is rejected and what separates that

one person we know who makes kind of

weird our God means for our and yes but

what I’m trying to get

and that other person we all know food

is retarted it’s something of some

reason the first time they work with

rejected the first time the publisher

said no to that book on our calorie

wouldn’t show their art they quit so I

began to ironically delve into the lives

of people I admire looking not what made

them successful in the long run but for

what kept them going during the

difficult early stages of their career

when they necessarily work as talented

as they want to be and as I did this

research by the countenance of patterns

and one pattern we saw getting again he

was starchy permeability during the

early stages of their career so the

thing about creativity isn’t it makes

you vulnerable like really really

vulnerable and that’s in particular what

I’m going to be talking about so

creativity involves putting something

out of yourself and it drains

Australians every single resource you

have over time devours your time your

energy

their help their relationships maybe

that other correct so you have to find

ways to manage it and to channel and

potentially turn it into your most

valuable assets but the thing is the

putting what you create out into the

world takes a lot of guts and that’s

what so many people hide their creations

in cupboards or hydros or in notebooks

I’m sure many of you do I’m sure many of

you and something you’ve made hidden

away so it might be a draft or a sketch

or a prototype or even just an idea

that’s buried in your mind so I think

the organum to the best when he said in

regards to creativity then the moment

you feel just possibly you’re walking

down the street naked exposing too much

of your heart in your mind and what

exists on the inside showed too much for

yourself that is a moment you might

expect to get it right and that’s honor

ability that the organic describes that

it’s an inherent part of producing

creative work because you sort of de

growing inside yourself we find

something

right check there to the penis floor

polisher but any reason to love and once

it’s out it doesn’t fully belong to you

it actually kind of belongs to people

experience them and their attitudes

their biases their own opinions their

knowledge their ignorance add new angles

and their dimensions to it so other

search I spend my time writing website

where I write essays on topics which I

think are interesting and important and

which other people find interesting the

fortune as well and I hear from people

all over the world of all ages all kinds

of walks of life who have been inspired

and motivated by from Everett and

sometimes people saying he chose their

light switches these ones here but at

the same time pressing the publish

button that is always terrifying even

though I’ve been doing this seven or

seven years now and I’ve written

probably thousands of articles and posts

every single time there’s that fear that

I might make some huge error I kept on

many times our and might offend someone

back soon

or am ia example or just the general

local criticism that anyone who writes

yes kind of

what are you doing this for you’re not

original of people doing about some of

pointy bothering go get a real job so

when you put your work out into the

world the reactions you get will summer

on this spectrum it’s how I imagine it

I’m with people tend to fail the

negatives and etc but personally I

disagree

I felt the worst of the reaction who

gets your work whatever your work is

whoever you are it’s actually the mutual

reduction this is the art gallery that

ever release up to five minutes the

stone which the book which doesn’t get

reviewed the academic paper no insights

the performance the people decide snow

journey because indifference ratings and

people do all sorts of crazy things to

try and show reaction to their work just

any sort of reaction things like

clickbait titles on otherwise persecuted

journalism or misogynistic

have nothing to do with the actual phone

or do projection of publicity sounds to

get media coverage just anything to try

and justify the effort and the time the

stress which has got into producing so

actually the spectrum looks a bit more

like this with nutrients working

scenario and other people sacristy

personally I think crystalline is a

valuable part of the creative president

because the thing that criticism is that

it pushes you out of your comfort zone

it forces you to New York art at what

you’re doing with your work and today if

you actually want to do and if it

matters to you enough so for example

I’ve had instances where I have received

a particularly vile attack the kind

where so we’re going to beyond picking

apart these work and it starts to

actually pull apart the creative entire

distance and there have been occasions

when I sang cry the night and then it’s

the next morning I got up and kept on

writing and doing that always takes a

lot of kind of energy it was very

difficult but it’s in time when the Sun

hits your work you have a choice to

either give up

or to keep pushing and keep making

better and to use that patreon I

christen and of feel so this brings me

to an ability which like their point

this is a graph of how I view the

relationship between vulnerability and

the quality of someone’s work and this

applies to all sorts creates work are

not talking about art and writers are

talking about music dance technology

entrepreneurship is anything that

involves creating something nothing

essentially and on one end there is low

vulnerability to just totally

vulnerability people who don’t care

about the reaction service each of their

work nothing anyone’s ever passed it

matters and as we thought they don’t

really have the ability to move forward

at work because they are stuck in their

own minds focusing on what they’re doing

and not what are people thinking the

only other end is very high mobility

when someone is so sensitive to the

reactions they get to their work that a

single Chris

single rejection will cause them to give

up and personally I’ve been to both ends

of the spectrum

this veteran and tonight a little very

productive so in my research I looked

various creative people and how they how

they found the midpoint of that bell

curve

one person I met at Stephen King and in

particular how he handle rejection

battle area North Korea I couldn’t find

picture of anything rejection letters

but apparently one publishes that you

offered this book reveal psychiatric

help

which and so like any writer Stephen

King will teach a lot of rejection

that’s a study in his career and he

could have gone to the extreme and so

it’s that broth I just showed he could

have thought with they don’t recognize

Virginia’s is ver los and just kept

sending out the same piece of work and

at the same time he could have been so

vulnerable that he just crumbled the

first to move rejected and he gave up

and established when he did it’s quite

fascinating he took the rejection

matches and he hung them for a nail and

each time you ran out spacing the nail

and he kept going

he kept saying

who kept their amazing works until

eventually the projection that is terms

of sets of flats in that book which was

made with pairing which may be found and

even Kings now saw something like three

computing in books making him one of the

successful writers ever but this process

he went through of fear to look at the

rejection letters on his wall and to

acknowledge that they existed but at the

same time the to keep moving forward is

the process through which the cream

rises to the top and the people who are

truly determined to create skills are

actually finally able to succeed so

another person I looked at is georges

perec

and in particular this book portrayed in

man which is an incredible book i

recommend to anyone and it was the first

book parrot growth when he was quite

young but it was actually published very

recently so about fifty years after his

death and in his own lifetime parrot

trying very hard to get this book

published and he kept being asked to

rewrite it by publishers so you catch

writing and rewriting it and then after

a few people

he decided to take on so he put the book

away and he went to invert mobiles and

ensure that they were so amazing we

could not be published so when he

received Indonesia rejections again

he could have go to the experiments of

he could have kept writing and rewriting

and

until his original message was

completely lost

and it probably would have been

published anyway how many times people

evasive well there’s no raises but at

that point and at same time you could

have quit all right during jobs

something else in his life

the said he acknowledged that people

were not ready for a book at that point

and he put it away and then eventually

it rediscovered published and became

this new market and through the other

books he wrote Jeremy’s love parrot

became just a very influential writer he

was a huge part of the 20th century

literature so essentially what I’m

suggesting here is that in your own work

whatever it is that you do whatever it

is you do now in the future to try and

picture that bell curve and each time

someone responds to your work wherever

it is in the spectrum they responding to

try and find that midpoint wherever you

are now to just try and try and find

that midpoint but about earth where you

can take feedback and take criticism at

the same time

keep moving keep improving and to keep

using references in the skill but also

under the accomplish so to sum this up

in one sentence I’ll say this thing

about not caring it’s about caring enough there’s not too much
