you know what this really is this is a
trapdoor and if you go over your time
limit and I’m quickly approaching it
you’ll fall into the dungeon why I’m so
excited about talking to you because I’m
on a mission and my mission is to try to
convince land readings and animals like
you how important a notion is to the
future of our species because we’re
quickly running out of space defeatist
there’s this loss of land through the
population more than the earth is
reaching a point where it’s hitting its
maximum capacity sustainability we are
past it if you were feeding everyone
like me of America if you feed everyone
like the American see the earth can only
support 2.5 billion people and we went
past that number 19 so we’re approaching
attendeth billion people which is when
the earth gets its maximum capacity of
feeding us on land if we’re all
vegetarians so there’s a real crisis
center at the ocean we must turn to the
ocean we must turn to the sea and so I
want to talk to you about an amazing
program that were I’ve been commissioned
by our country to participate in which
is the second Lewis and Clark expedition
and actually I should say Lois and Clark
as you’ll see in a few minutes let’s
start the story in 1803 when President
Jefferson cut a deal with Napoleon
Napoleon had picked a fight with England
lost and he had to pay them a war debt
of fifteen million bucks so Napoleon
came over and says I have I got a deal
for you
I’ll sell you the Louisiana Purchase for
four cents an acre for fifteen million
bucks now naturally Congress was opposed
hasn’t changed gentlemen had the
leadership ability to say well we’re
going to do and he then got Lewis and
Clark and don’t forget Sacagawea to go
out and find out what we had bought and
as you know that was the famous Lewis
and Clark expedition and I think few
people would ever argue that but that
wasn’t a pretty good deal I was more
than Wichita Kansas we’re all
oceanographers come from and I
constantly go out west is it once it’s
in your blood you just can’t can’t help
it and that wonderful piece of property
which doubled the size of the United
States at the time as alleged in the
National Park System which we all love
but also is the one of the major
economic engines of America’s economy so
it was a good deal all right let’s jump
forward to eighteen and nineteen
eighty-three when President Ronald
Reagan for the price of a pen and in
custom fifty million bucks he picked up
a pen and he declared ownership over the
largest underwater land of any other
nation and is called the new America and
the new America is reaches out 200 miles
from everything we own and don’t forget
all the property we own over here he did
exactly what Jefferson did he double the
size of America again but unlike
Jefferson he didn’t get some people to
go find out what we now own eighteen
took eighteen years later in two major
presidential commissions
fortunately won by Republican one by a
Democrat and they actually agreed Oh No
can we go back to that
and they said we need to create an
office of ocean exploration and I was
fortunate but to be invited by both
presidents to serve on both commissions
and I got to write in the law of the
land that’s always fun
and so we said we really mean for the
first time in the history of our country
an office of exploration and we also
need dedicated ships of exploration we
didn’t have ships that were dedicated
but research ships but they were going
to where we had already been with them
but we were now going to take these
ships and bold leadership that the word
boldly go where no one else has done
before and that’s what we’re doing now
to do this this is really interesting
because we’re boldly going where no one
has been so we don’t know what we’re
gonna run into so we had a technological
challenge what happens when we’re
exploring so I went up our initiative
which I told myself never do it I looked
at in here for 50 years has never owned
a ship and then my presidents asked me I
said well I gotta get it so I got an
East German spy that was actually nice
dermis by snip the down the time that’s
we’ll talk about that but I then
outfitted with extremely sophisticated
technology they could move us away from
physically going for 20-some years they
used to get in a sober and good alibi of
the ocean and I was spending all my time
going up and down oh very well and so I
went to Stanford and decided to develop
and their engineering labs a new system
we called telepresence and the concept
of telepresence was to move your spirit
again where land breathing animals
ninety-five percent of the human race
lives on less than 5%
think about it 95 percent human race
lives on less than 5% of the earth
because we like warm you like oxygen
look like we’re pretty particularly
people that we evolve ourselves into
lots like a koala room today and so we
cannot go down there safely so we had to
have things to carry us safely
there but if you can move your spirit
that’s a cool thing your spirit has no
mass indestructible and losses to be
alive so I said well let’s have an
out-of-body experience and that’s what
this present generation is doing that
you know they’re constantly walking
around things in their ears in their
mind somewhere else
where there’s their mind is somewhere
else and that’s okay because that’s
where most we’re going to be in some end
effector and the end effector is a robot
now how many of you saw a baton okay the
movie avatar there’s a scene or jaded or
veteran goes into the room and laying on
the slab next to him is the thing called
am NOT this was the southern almost
human-like I thought they were pretty
sexy and this thing was that eight feet
long blue green has ears and funny tail
and they laid Jade next to the Navi and
bingo-bango the Navi eyes they look Jake
into the lobby
do you remember what Jake did when he
woke up in the Noddy know it but he ran
out of the operating room they walk we
really screwed up their disguise Devils
so they went in trap Jake down and they
said why to run and he simply said I
wanted to wind in my face again because
he was in a wheelchair from from from a
war veteran that he his legs so he said
I want it with in my face again here’s
the important point
he didn’t care that his legs were eight
feet tall of blue green funny tip he
could run because he moved his spirit
into another thing week now an
engineering turn to cover an end
effector so that is my knot that’s
carries my spirit and so this is my my
coffee it may look a little funny but I
don’t care because it safely takes my
spirit to the bottom of the ocean and
the beauty of this is one
I get down there I don’t have to leave
the bottle – you got a submarine I’m
going up and down oh they have an
elevator this thing – put down leave it
down for me explore exploration is all
about moving but so I come across
something I’ve never seen before I have
to because I made a promise always keep
your promises I promised that if I made
a discovery no matter where it was no
matter when it wasn’t a matter of people
was I would have the brightest
scientists deliver the spirits anyway
delivered it to the spot of discovery 30
minutes I minimal oh no because I can’t
carry the whole University because I’m
above it nor do they really want to sit
around a book so I had to develop all of
this technology to move my spirit up
here up to there and here’s what I did
so those are my robots those my not
these I need someone to invite it up so
I can see and this is my command center
so this is where my operating room
aboard the ship and then when we find
something I can put it on a satellite
center of Shore but what’s more
important is the ship thinks it’s at the
University so that his trailer homes
area code for a one-eight-seven form
that can fail anyway it’s more for us to
call that and so with that if we make a
discovery we have a sly protein
emergency room of a hospital we have no
idea what the Animus is going to deliver
every morning you know two o’clock
Sunday morning in comes the animal
surprise mother having a baby auto
accident heart attack how does the
hospital deal with such that surgery
doctors on couple I’ll not get in here
we’re going to keep them alive but we
got about 20 minutes do we need you so
that’s the concept is we’re gonna have
doctors on call so each watch leader has
a book of all expertise all these
different challenges you know on biology
geology archaeology you name it and then
they say call me
now in the book you don’t know this but
secretly I put my name under one subject
UFO
I said if we come across the UFO because
I will never have to talk about the
Titanic so we put it on the satellite as
we put it up on the satellite I built an
inner space center at the edge to look
you should go there visit come down the
road and you’ll find in this of a room
that’s operating 24/7 and then we were
using this new internet now this you’re
going to need to learn about this is
called internet to level 3 you’re right
now on a dirt road on the information
highway outfit I mean you have so little
clocks always around because you have no
bandwidth this is 10 gigabytes it’s like
drinking information from I better get
back to my door like drinking
information from a fireman and with that
I can fool your mind into thinking how
many times you watch the movie code is
that real or not is give up we can foil
your line into thinking you’re down
through this kind of bandwidth and when
that gets your hats
it’ll be hitting your house soon
certainly within the decade you’ll move
your mind electronically that you do
like me work at home folk spirit I go
out there periodically just for the fun
of it but I’d rather not I’d rather yeah
right I live in mind so then we can go
out to any academics and with all over
the world we’re building remote command
centers and are pretty cheap there less
than a car and I can you sit down there
and you’re good to go
and the way it works is we make a
discovery and we look at our boatman say
ok call and we pick up the phone and
call and they promise they won’t be
playing golf they won’t be doing
something else but they’ll answer the
phone and then we so imagine discovery
we always discover anything
to a proper person to sleep
so we wake them up and dead and we say
boot up your laptop one leg that we at
least be told one way it would go that
path when we scream them the discovery
mother and dad and we patched their
phone to the pilots say what you think
this is a living wake up here is this a
what do you go wow and it was cool then
they have a social networking team and
they trigger the team and they all run
with their consoles in the tichelman
command control the ship and we give
them about a dag on a big discovery to
say no that’s enough we got to keep
going
well the cool thing about this is our
team how Lewis and Clark call their team
the Corps of Discovery so I think we’re
going to call our team the core of
exploration but our team is going to be
different from yours it’s not going to
be a bunch of guys so I am and a because
I can that’s always nice to be thinking
dead 55% of my core will be women in
positions of leadership and authority
not new they’re running the show
why did I pick 55% a big 55 percent
because that’s Colin funders that’s I
can defend myself against a deck and
also I really want to have an impact on
the empowerment weapon because that’s
the only way we’re going to get things
on so average age of the mother on earth
is 19 that’s not a good because that’s
not half Japanese girls at 14 are having
babies that’s not good I’m 75 76 and
then is 24 and Haley 20 and that’s how
you get a cap on that rope so the more
even in third-world KITT Michael 150
bucks and you’ll have a huge impact upon
that so that’s important also it’s
important that my team reflects all the
demographics of Mike over the country a
child everyone sitting in this audience
should find their be able to find their
face not same thing or they go straight
to their face and see they can play so
this is critical and this is where my
wife Barbara who was met her at National
Geographic a television producer and she
has helped me develop the way to then
reach the generation with this
technology so we have complete National
Geographic it was nice enough to pose
complete television production studios
and then excuse me and then from that we
could reach out to any school any time
to what let us know come a larger school
now what’s critically important as well
is that we mentioned so we start taking
kids at fifteen because that’s the
insurance company you know they say
can’t take me under the fifteen will be
fifteen you can come out and begin in
mentor they’re very Emily Rose with the
button nose right here when she hit 15
she boom she is screwed that Celia I’m
fifteen in an hour down I’m ready to go
but so it’s optional and but then they
are mentored and different disciplines
and constant learning process it’s a
it’s a floating summer camp but it runs
for seven months and then we they know
you see their bed haha this is Benjamin
a macaroni yeah
I only wrote the button nose but anyway
it’s with this mentoring they know
they’re going to be put in the hot seat
because they have complete broadcasting
now we broadcast we focus on middle
school because the battle is won or lost
in middle school that’s when children
form their passions and so this – what
we focus on and then we rotate an
amazing number of people through this
process and it’s it works we’ve now can
we reach each year with our social media
we reach millions and millions of kids
you want to go to novice life at ort if
I haven’t yeah go to Nautilus like that
go RG you can be alerted through through
also social medias when- study boom will
let you know if Jenna Jenna instantly so
it’s a great adventure but it’s
critically important because we must
become more and more depend upon the sea I’m going to give you a minute thank you
trapdoor and if you go over your time
limit and I’m quickly approaching it
you’ll fall into the dungeon why I’m so
excited about talking to you because I’m
on a mission and my mission is to try to
