good evening ladies and gentlemen my
name is Rayleigh and I’m a classical
string instrument player the instrument
I play dates back to ancient Greece
between 400 to 500 BC provided by this
rich history my performance synchronizes
with music to express my inner emotions
when I perform I will leave the audience
well so you might be surprised because
normally when I do your tricks people
say wow that’s really amazing I seen
that on a TV before you’re really good
at this
Wow I would take the common one and say
yeah thank you
that’s very nice of you however that’s
actually the equivalent of saying that
hey I saw it drop in the park I saw that
you know too before I see that and it’s
before well actually seeing a yo-yo and
saying that hey that’s new it’s kind of
more than a giraffe in a park since you
probably know what a giraffe is from
your picture books but how can I blame
you perhaps your understanding of a
yo-yo
it’s an exactly something like this
perhaps you were thinking something like
this flat cylinder with a string
attached and you roll it up fold it down
get it up so perhaps that’s the your
view of a yo-yo well it’s kind of your
textbook review of the yo-yo or your
children’s book view of the yo-yo
actually in truth there’s actually five
styles of yo-yoing and this is just one
of them
their names are one eight two eight
three eight four eight and five eight
yes those are two legit names now let me
show you one so one name is the one I
started before it’s called a butterfly
yo-yo because it’s really really wide
now that is because this butterfly
design allows it to sleep longer and
so thank you now moving out the number
scale apparently this is called 2a so
you’ve probably seen this before this is
called 2 8 it’s called 2a because I
guess sometimes you can’t use two of
them and we prefer to call them looping
yo-yos because you do looping tricks and
perhaps you have seen the world classic
trick called around the world I don’t
know why they call that it’s very silly
and as I said before you can’t do two of
them I have to say I’m not really good
at this so let’s try this all right yay
oh no this is really really bad
well you can’t go to around the world
that’s something so that’s all right
let’s move along the longer scale and
we’re going to go to three eight three
eight is really really complicated it’s
actually one of the most hardest
I don’t know number scale you can learn
so you get two of the 1a yo-yo s– and
you do each both hand I have to be
honest with you I do not know how to do
that so this is my first try that’s all
I can do and I can pull it up I guess
and I don’t know how to deal with us so
I’ll put it back now so it’s time to go
to for a for a is well it’s kind of new
it looks like this it’s a really really
big butterfly yo-yo and sometimes we
call it off string because it goes off
string so let’s see what will happen so
yeah it goes off string and you can do
Austrian tricks with it
I don’t do this Allah so I might fail
so as you guys do for a yo-yos like that
one are plastic so they won’t break so
find that yo-yo you call it offhand or
freehand because you can actually let it
go and I don’t know why people decided
to do this and be assured I won’t do
this in the hallway because it can’t be
sometimes really dangerous so I will
that’s this is not a yo-yo if you have
been following so far I’ve finished a
5/8 so this is a Japanese wooden toy
called kendama can dama not condemn Oh
or whatever you guys pronounce it but
kendama there’s three cups and there’s a
ball and it’s still a string instrument
alright so you bounce it and the oh gosh
okay I’m shaking there’s actually some
string tricks you can do I don’t know
maybe like that but whatever so in the
short amount of time of two minute or so
I was able to show you what five
different types of yo-yo and one
Japanese wooden toy so how did this
amazing and awesome sport became I don’t
know trap in the park well it’s because
that a long time ago there were actually
many of us I remember drawing gray five
we were playing your tricks in the
hallway and we would just do all sort of
silly stuff around the world or do
looping tricks until the teacher keeps
us out some people love to play
basketball or some people stop doing
your trick and started to play let’s say
video games I came here our grade seven
I think and when I arrived in Canada the
situation didn’t necessarily become
better because there’s something called
mobile devices mobile device it’s very
easy for our children I remember in
grade seven a lot of us just took our
phones and went to that magic Wi-Fi
corner
video games it’s very hard to convince
my friends to play yo-yo tricks now so
my message is for those who already has
a passion yes people has to support the
unique and different but it’s also the
job of those who has a passion to
protect what they love if you have a
passion show it to the people around you
and show them what great qualities they
bring don’t just put them down and jump
into the mainstream maintain it and show
the world that were wonderful qualities
your tell’em may bring no matter how
special or how much of a giraffe it is
so well without further ado I will show
you a little bit yo-yo magic I guess if
I can get a string straight artists
already so Oh music
[Music]
to take risk so I’m taking a risk here
and telling you guys that here in Canada
we kind of view ourselves as a culture
collage if I may say so
and if diversity is truly our identity
then it’s more of our job to protect
what is unique and sure our passion to
the world so if you want to see more of
this crazy stuff and not just everything
in the mainstream then show your hobby
to the world and let the world see it
and I will try to do the trick that I
failed no I’m not doing it [Applause]
