equilibrium a state in which opposing
forces or influences are balanced we
speak of balance and all aspects of our
lives but how do we identify the forces
that shape us how can we manipulate
those forces when we begin to stagnate
and what happens when those forces shift
unexpectedly what happens when we fall
in physics the concept of balanced force
pairs for as part of the foundation of
Newtonian theory for every action an
equal and opposite reaction so when we
push away from the earth the earth also
pushes away from us and when we are
our human physiology strives for the
equilibrium point called homeostasis it
maintains the neutral and balanced pH a
tight fluid and electrolyte balance in a
balanced brain chemistry all without our
conscious input opposing mechanisms keep
these biochemical and biophysical values
in a specific window in which life can
thrive buffers and defenses oppose
disrupting and destabilizing factors but
these mechanisms can only be pushed so
far much of our nervous system is
dedicated to maintaining equilibrium in
the world that is constantly shifting
and changing and in which we are
battling gravity and other forces that
seek to tether us and tie us down a vast
network connecting our sensory motor
cortices our cerebellar circuitry and
our vestibular apparatus help us remain
upright and balanced even if the ground
under our feet is somewhat unsteady or

our oldest adages tried and true have
equilibrium at their hearts you should
eat a balanced diet seek to balance the
scales of justice and chase that elusive
