picture yourself falling out of the sky
into the ocean you enter the ocean grow
a fishtail and start to swim underwater
you can breathe underwater and you swim
next to the Penguins and fish and you
start to brush up on this weird green
algae this algae is giving you the
energy to swim faster and feel great you
are curiously swimming along and all of
a sudden you encounter a deep ditch in
this ditch lies a shiny green capsule
that’s doing something really weird as
you get closer you realize that it’s
printing old-fashioned film for it for a
camera weird right
if I told you that that actually
happened to someone you would never
believe me but if I told you that that
was a dream that I had or to make it any
less significant no it wouldn’t in this
talk I’m gonna try to explain why dreams
are important and that we should never
brush them off over this past winter
break I decided to keep a dream journal
every morning when I woke up I would
write down everything I could remember
about the previous night’s dream with
each progressing night my dreams became
more vivid weird and interesting keeping
a dream journal is a great experience
and it is the most important step to
lucid dreaming where you can wake up in
your dreams and be fully aware and
conscious of what’s going on this brings
me to my next point consciousness
according to Sigmund Freud dreams by a
representation of our unconscious wishes
and desires human consciousness is
broken up into three parts the conscious
mind the subconscious mind and the
unconscious mind dreams work as the
elevator down to the unconscious mind
and they allow us to interpret the
depths of our brains if someone ever
tells you a dream is random they are
wrong dreams can always be interpreted
and humans have been doing so since the
Bible a common dream symbol and many
cultures is being chased if you’ve ever
been chased by something in a dream it
means that you feel threatened by
something in your life so reflect on
what is chasing you and you might get
some answers as to what you feel
threatened by another common dream
symbol is water calm water pools could
signify a stable unconscious
while a rough ocean could mean that you
have a less stable and possibly troubled
unconscious menthe
however interpreting your dreams is
easier said and done because not
everyone remembers their dreams studies
show that only 10% of people remember
their dreams consistently every morning
I say remember not start dream because
you dream every night regardless of
whether or not you remember them in the
morning
so there are necessary steps that one
can take to start remembering your
dreams what has helped me in the past is
to get off any electronics before bed
not only will this improve the quality
of your sleep but it will also allow you
to remember your dreams in the morning
if this starts to work it is critical
that you reflect and think about your
dreams right when you wake up you can do
this by writing them down or just by
thinking about them whatever way you
choose to reflect on your dreams it is
proven but the more you think about
dreaming in general the more vivid your
dreams will become in the future
waking up naturally as opposed to with
an alarm also helps with remembering
your dreams this is because when you
wake up with that alarm you run the risk
of interrupting a REM cycle and possibly
waking up in the middle of the dream
being able to remember your dreams is
also related to stress levels the more
stressed and tired you feel in your life
the less likely it is for you to
remember your dreams today this is the
most common reason why people fail to
remember their dreams dreams are natural
and the fact that we can’t remember them
because we are so sucked up and are busy
and stressful lives is troublesome the
reality is that we are living in this
fast-paced and technology filled day and
age and isolating yourself on a deserted
island is unrealistic however I think
that dreams can be our escape the dream
that I shared with you while in the
beginning of this talk could mean a
number of things one interpretation
could speak to my love for the ocean
swimming or my interest in film in
reality all of these explanations are
valid because dreams never have one
specific meaning no matter how
insignificant a dream may seem never
brush it off remember that dreams can
always be interpreted they are a
manifestation of our
unconscious minds and they tell you
things about yourself thank you
