hi my name is David moons and today I
would be talking to you about my
personal project but before we start off
I’d like to ask you guys one question
and be honest okay raise your hands
everything Cambodia is a bizarre country
bizarre as I mean a special place to
live
come on yeah yeah okay yeah yes I agree
so Cambodia is it’s a special and unique
place with its own ways of living in
ethics especially when it comes to
driving and this is what I’ll be talking
to you about I would be talking to you
about the dangers of driving the city of
Pompeii and not only that but what I
also want to raise awareness about the
dangerous things that on the road that
people don’t really aren’t aware of and
I want to share with you my solution of
how we can fix this problem since the
topic of this TED talk is about creating
a new hopeful future I decided why not
create of Hope which is to – I wanted to
create a future with students teachers
and staff anyone in the ICP community
could come to this school in and out to
ensure that they’re driving safely and
to reduce their risk of driving I’m of
rotaries their risk of having an
accident that’s how the driver looks
like in Cambodia let’s start off by some
statistics according to the World Health
Organization article based on Cambodia
in 2013 it was estimated that more than
2400 were killed due to road accidents
and 70% of these were motorbike related
if I did the math correctly it means
that four people died every day due to
motorbikes for that’s a lot of deaths in
one day it’s shocking to hear that
motorbikes a vehicle that some of you in
this very room rely on for daily
transportation can get you killed
anywhere anytime as well as anyhow in
fact my dad to me his opinion to one of
my friends
he stated that it is almost impossible
to live in Cambodia and not drive a
motorbike alright one has a passenger
really it’s impossible motorbikes it’s a
vehicle that you should consider having
when living the city one because it’s
cheap too because it’s the only vehicle
that gets you anywhere you want faster
than ever but the only problem is that
every time you go out with one there is
a slight chance that you might have a
fatal accident which then leads to death
now I’m not saying slide because it’s
little let’s see in other well developed
countries you could say that there are
less accidents compared to Cambodia well
here not everyone was educated to drive
properly so the next time you take your
motorbike out keep in mind that it could
be your last time driving one but let’s
be honest everyone drives quite crazy
here right I mean I remember my dad
telling me an old joke that in Cambodia
a red line means go a green light let’s
go faster and you’re like well I don’t
know I could mean anything to anyone
here but it wasn’t because of the laws
that people were driving crazy maybe it
was because of the road conditions or
the lack of signs too but it also sorry
but let me tell you story I am David as
you already all know I am 16 years old
and I have been driving motorbike for
five years now in this very city in this
crazy City five years and this is my
first day driving one to school of
course since I am only a tenth grader
I’m not allowed to allow too so I was
asked to get a driving license which I
did I applied for one but they told me I
couldn’t get one I was told that for a
125cc
standard bike you didn’t need a driving
licence so practically I was rejected to
get a driving licence also as well as a
driving test it’s strange but this also
had to do that in 2000
there was a new law stating that if you
had a 150cc biker on or under you did
not leading driving license it was a
gift from the king himself but it’s also
a gift that can bring death to some
people so what can we do to fix this
problem well a few weeks ago I had to in
vu interview some teachers as part of my
personal project
I interviewed a teacher named mr.
Anderson and I asked him what do you
think we could do to change the way
people drive in Cambodia and he replied
it’s because of the behavior that causes
accidents people only wear helmets not
because they want to be safe or protect
themselves but because I don’t want to
get caught by the police so this photo
right here as you can see police guy
with no helmet I mean that happens a lot
and the guy with helmet hears is pretty
lucky and this struck me that it struck
me that maybe it wasn’t because of the
laws or because of the lack of real
science it was because of the behavior
it was because they weren’t raised to
drive properly and people only wear
helmets so they didn’t wanna get caught
honestly when it comes to being raised
how to drive properly I was raised
pretty well by a very good father he
knew how to drive pretty well in fact
these five years experience of driving I
have never had an accident I have had
only one which wasn’t even a proper
accident
I slipped because of some rock on a road
but because Cambodia is a developing
country and not everyone is rich people
don’t also have the money to maintain
their bikes locals are literally driving
on the streets with broken blinkers
broken rear lights and bad brakes and
occasionally at night no headlights at
all so this meant that it was because
the lack of technical control the bikes
so if any one of you own a bike I
recommend that you check your bike that
you that you take your bike that is in
conviction in I’m sorry I recommend that
you check that your bike is in good
condition before you drive one but
what’s another way we could fix the
problem
well the answers right here Emanuel I
have designed and created a manual that
would teach you the safety procedures
and ways to drive in a city and we do
school risk of having accents and to
make sure that your driving is safer for
you and the others around of course what
you see here could change like the cover
which already has changed but take the
mix and drop and ways that you find in
this manual can be pretty strange and
bizarre for example in Cambodia and only
in Cambodia it is safer to pass by the
right-hand side and this is due to the
fact that the route lanes and cameras
are so small that when you end up
passing sorry that when you end up
passing on this side you see motorbike
or another car in the opposite lane and
I’m sure some of you has experienced
this driving to the handsome Boulevard
on the way to school but cars are
literally taking your lane just to pass
a car so but but the manual that would
soon be published the manual suit will
soon be published to the SPP community
but for those who want to access it
could be found in digitally and for
those who want a hard copy it could be
found now let me say this I do care
about people I am a pretty kind of
honest guy but I also care about their
lives too just because you are driving
safe does not mean that you’re the
others are driving same either and just
because you’re a good driver doesn’t
mean you won’t have an accident the good
drivers fall – I think that is unfair
that anytime anyone take a motorbike out
or having a slight chance of having an
accident or sometimes death here
everyone doesn’t drive very well so it
is up to you how you want to drive but
for those who want to know how to drive
safely and locally there will be a
manual out there that would
to everything and I mean everything from
knowing how to take turns the right way
to knowing what to do if you get caught
by the police the manual is based on my
5 years experience of driving and I’m
pretty sure that my 5 years of driving
every single day
is enough to spot the dangers and turn’d
come up with ways of how I could improve
the driving and to make it safe for you
so let’s create a hope of future a
future that may be your son a teacher a
staff or student could drive anywhere
and eat ice cream with your friend
without having an accident to dose you
drive out there I wish you the best of
luck and drive safe thank you very much
[Applause]
