Disability is a goldmine | Ifeoma Ifechelobi | TEDxBissallaRd

and it’s not very emotional I didn’t
think about how old why I hit a movie
it’s been big cause it’s been beautiful
then they set up the coming on stage
tonight
very strong many times we think we know
exactly what we want to do and exactly
where one smoothly and we tend to have
enough of a tear in fact it does not
matter where you think it also pasta and
potions that anyone has the school
system we expect every child to talk to
water at the dynamics of nature God is
not back he does things differently but
then I think about our Creator whether
they be close whatever we don’t have all
round clips we don’t have all sweaty
we don’t have all that time to wrap it
we have kids of different sizes shapes
dominated the pattern of cutting
I just wonder why do we want to have
typical human being
I had a conflicts of interest
thinking about what to talk about today
I thought in the line of myself as a
therapist because I’m going to be
talking to you about disability
management and the possibility that the
replay goldmine in what we call
disability
I first thought about saying leading out
without breaking the jet because I see a
Jen when I see a child doesn’t matter
how he is he may be what we call typical
it may be what we call artistic it may
be what we call dyslexic he may be what
we call having Down syndrome or sensory
processing disorder all sorts of things
he could be any of those the when I
interface with a human being
the freshman I see is the jam it’s a
goldmine in that human being but our
world is created in patterns and so it’s
easier for us to deal with patterns this
is how you behave this is how you talk
this is how you work this is how you
make music this is how you make hair
this is how you do all sorts of things
and so when they told us something into
that pattern
we think he’s abnormal he’s not typical
who defines of them of abnormality who
defines what is normal
maybe we define the concepts of normal
and typical from our phenomenological
reality what we are used to what we have
been taught what we have experienced
what we have seen in various places it’s
not really normal
I want to look at she go again now she
wasn’t typical of me Roger
from an aristocratic family and ladies
to reach political the VVIP she was a
succeeding in school he wasn’t doing the
typical thing
and the father was trying to fit into a
mold this is the old mirror mode you
dare not step out of it this is how we
do things
this is who we are this is how we
succeed how dare you change that
and that’s what we do every time now all
of us have met children who are not
typical you have met a child who
probably has also same a child who is
dyslexic who’s in the classroom and
looks everything normal but it’s not
succeeded you probably have met that
child who can sit still you know he can
sit in a place without something moving
something moving or you have met that
what is this and he says this is a cop
and you say what do you do with this he
doesn’t know what you do with it and
he’s drinking water and you say what are
you doing and he says I’m drinking water
and you say so what do you do with a cop
doesn’t know he’s holding a cup in his
hand he’s drinking water he knows he’s
drinking what happened he doesn’t know
and that translates to have been
expressive language disorder
and so we we bring them into a place you
know we all tend to dissociate with
these children he’s not normal and then
we you know we whisper around us I guess
didn’t catch his child he can’t see that
in a weird way have you think she was
outside
and sometimes you meet them in the mall
and they wonder where she at Holden have
fun she’s not the only one who have that
so yes old you know wisest choice or
ill-mannered
and in my culture a lot of times I you
know recently been thinking about
autistic children and what we call a
buncha in the evil Holland
you know those children who would rather
not communicate with you but then you
see them outside and it looks like
they’re playing okay and you can’t see
who they’re playing with and then they
took one of this flapping and you see
them the laughs and they see them and
all sorts of things
and then you start to hear whispers
because you know he seems to have spirit
friends and spirits Liebling that’s
exactly what we see in autism children
who are entirely cut out from reality
but they have a reality they deal with
and so when you see them sometimes they
are laughing and sometimes you see them
they are talking and sometimes you see
them they are playing out characters and
then you think that they have spirit
brother conspiracy stuff and so we begin
that could probably be a reason why
these people are here
is it possible the out of this dog hair
is actually a gold mine is it possible
that these children can create something
that would bless our world I would say
yes in my process as a clinical
psychologist dealing with developmental
cases
I have seen children who are absolutely
cut out from reality cut out from what
is normal
cut out from what typical create wonders
of life
I have seen an autistic child things
amazing pictures
I have seen an assisted child also who
plays amazing tunes on the Geeta I have
seen another autistic child
who writes beautiful stories
how did we get here
over the years I have worked with
I began to pause to see if by any reason
I would you know see something maybe a
little bit of light a little bit of
something that can be sold to the world
so you know the approach I created which
is what I’m going to be chopped which is
what I’m talking to you about today
he’s the concept which as I was thinking
about it last night I just realized that
that was one of the things that
typically stay in his seven Habits of
Highly Effective People
you remember speak to understand before
I started to seek to understand the
children I had all the theories I had
all the laws I had all the behavior our
principles they have what we treated
but then the we’re not fully functional
and I was thinking and these children
become fully functional
and then I started to stick to
understand them and you know what I used
the scariest things about them
when it when a childhood when a mom
whose child has especially drinks he
more hard to you the first thing they
spec to talk about are the things they
don’t want to see
in the case of autism that even if he
doesn’t become normal
and another one goes you know he’s
always doing this I don’t know what he’s
doing I if you can just remove that
that’s only see them you know
well you know what I started to do I
forgot to explore the maladaptive
behaviors I said did you see could it be
the child who can not sit here in the
classroom and learn
actually have something to give to the
world from his restlessness maybe he’s a
maybe maybe this tent artists
maybe he sets up vamsa you know the feet
is always moving in the classroom
this is something he has to give and so
we would explore the very things the
I tell you a little bit about robots
Robert James who are Spencer when he was
nine he’s 12 now three years ago
one of the things he would always to is
flap his hand some wiggle his fingers in
and we you know we would usually start
the work with the basics of
communication you just saw the child can
communicate whether verbally or
otherwise and so we’re already doing the
basics of ABA it’s a treatment in autism
and then it looks like the steam we hold
them steaming the appropriate mechanisms
actually our mothers worry a lot of
parents worry a lot about Simmons and
show them that we all feel we all have a
little bit of autism you know because
you know someone might be talking to you
and you think you just seem and that’s
what that child does when the
environment becomes overwhelming they
begin to you know to see and so I
started to look at Robert teams the
finger wiggling the hand flapping and I
a grand goldmine in those handsome
fingers
and so we first of all brought the piano
and the peonies that he wasn’t working
we started to teach him how to bead and
it wasn’t working
we gave him raw cheese and pins and it
wasn’t working
and then we brought the Geeta
it is the most beautiful experience I
have ever had
Robert lights in them was like a bomb
was reached and he grabs the Giza and he
went like this you know he was read the
Gita and jump it over the whole place
and then people started to come into
them most especially treatment and
what’s going on what’s going on what’s
going on and dude it
every time Robert plays even
professional guitarist would act who
taught him and when his plane he is
absolutely peaceful there are no finger
weakness anymore
there are no next witches anymore there
are no hand-clapping anymore there are
no VOC House teams anymore
Robert was very peaceful and very
productive
I tell you a million and one stories
about children who out of the effects of
their behavior
have created the wonders of the world
and so I would have to say again
could we just pause and try to
understand that’s always thick to be
understood
can we think about these children it’s
handsome leading out
I do a lot of teacher development
workshops I struggled in school
and I tell teachers that if you can
adopt the learning style of teaching
more children will succeed in the
classroom
no knowledge is new every knowledge
exists and they are all around us and we
experience them every day and we found
them in the cabinets of our brain that
yes you called him
I will function from those places there
is nothing you’re bringing into the
classroom that is new
you probably are not talking about it
from the concept the child knows about
see if we can see a light in these
children
if we can pause and become a learning
society a learner’s mother
a learning father a learning sibling a
learner classmate a learning neighbor a
learning society we would one day
the doubt the very essence that would
