Create Your Own Gangster | Natasha Castles | TEDxScottsdaleWomen

what do you mean you can’t do that
you’re so lucky I can never do what you
do you’re so lucky
when do you sleep these are just a
couple of phrases that absolutely make
me cringe I mean what do you mean you
can’t do that if you want to go ahead
and dye your hair pink go to school to
be a marine biologist upload you two
covers all day and start a slime making
business you should probably do that you
should create your own gangster I mean
really about the slime making business
because my nephew would absolutely love
that now the definition of the gangster
is a member of an organized-crime dating
as far back as the 1800s doing whatever
it is possible to make ends meet for
their family providing job security for
their cousins their cousins cousins and
even an insurance policy for local
businesses I started the phrase that
create your own gangster my first year
in radio I knew that I wanted to be in
radio as early as nine years old I
remember going to my great grandmother’s
house she had cable television and I was
so scared to ask her to change the
channel from CNN so I could catch the
kids on Disney’s 911 the kids that were
interviewing movie stars there were
radio stars themselves and I just wanted
to be that person so badly but at the
same point of my life I was being
molested by a family member my mom had
me at age of 16 which is the same age
after years of domestic abuse and
violence I decided that it was time to
spread my wings and at 17 years old I
I remember my mom coming to my
graduation she handed me a bouquet of
flowers and she said congratulations you
made it this far without getting
pregnant it’s okay I went ahead and put
that in the gas tank at 19 years old of
course I still wanted to be this radio
star talked to people on the radio every
day and still interview the biggest
music artists and movie artists but that
wasn’t a possibility for me at that time
everyone says they encouraged you to go
to college whatever you do you have to
go to college so I remember calling my
mom up and asking her she can help me
fill out some financial aid forms but
unfortunately she was too busy at that
time my boyfriend at the time said
you’re crazy you’re never gonna be on TV
you’re never gonna be on the radio why
don’t you just go to school to be a
cosmetologist or a medical assistant
like everybody else that would hurt I
just put it in the gas tank at 21 years
old I definitely forgot about him at 21
years old I was told about this radio
internship I was like oh my gosh this is
my chance I’m finally gonna be able to
do this I’m gonna be the biggest radio
star but of course he had to be enrolled
in college and $400 it sounded like a
lot of money for a 21 year old just to
enroll in college so I worked my butt
off finally got enrolled in English 101
just so that I can get that radio
internship now at this particular radio
station you had to be enrolled in
college obviously and to be hired on you
had to wait till somebody got fired or
they quit their job and unfortunately
everybody wants to keep their jobs right
so I had to do this dance with the
internship I did it for three semesters
after a year I finally got hired on no
one knew that I couldn’t afford college
and I was actually forging all the
paperwork so that I could stay enrolled
in this internship officially I was
enrolled into this internship and
got hired on to be a promotions
assistant setting up tents setting up
speakers and I still wanted to be this
radio star be on air my friends thought
I was crazy I’m working from little to
no money and I was delusional to think
that I would ever be on the radio that
one hurt it’s okay I just put it in the
gas tank and after two years of
consistently checking the schedule
sending my boss air checks telling him
that I wanted to be on the radio I
officially got my first on-air gig
makes these soft our top and happy you
know what I’m living my dreams on me
regardless if you’re going to be the
best bread maker you better make the
mess but out there all right we better
place but bread maker entrepreneurs
slinging bread bread necklaces up go
after dreams be happy live long always
work hard and never say no or never
Baker’s I definitely have a business
plan for you if you’re ready to talk
after this now eventually I was also
doing on-air weekends at a Spanish
station in the same company so I was
scheduled at the time sometimes running
back and forth between commercial breaks
making sure I was getting two commercial
breaks
but of course social media does its job
of making everything look so glamorous I
was meeting celebrities I was going to
all these shows but knew what no one
knew that I was barely making rent that
I was without electricity sometimes two
weeks at a time in this Arizona summer I
was working random jobs Frant dusk at a
salon walking dogs cleaning houses
working the front door at clubs
collecting emails the list goes on and
after four years of doing this dance of
the running back and forth between the
hallways I was officially called by a
competing radio station to offer me my
first full-time gig all this little girl
wanted was one full-time show afternoon
specifically because I wanted to be like
my idol miss Angie Martinez and I got my
first full-time gig it was three to nine
the castle’s show and eventually I got
two full-time shows doing 5:30 to 10:00
a.m. with the morning mess and also
still doing the castle show three to
seven and eventually this little girl
officially got to interview movement
you’re on the cover of Rolling Stone
magazine with Jamie Lee Curtis this is
the same year that you know Christiana
got whacked that’s right outside of the
steak house to 1992 is it what is the
energy like you know you’re on this side
of the spectrum you’re from Jersey these
things are happening obviously it’s why
decide in the news what is your indigo
it’s a very interesting question the
first person that has actually exposed
other dates that paralleled what this
all happened I remember very vividly
because my fame and God ease Fame were
parallel yeah and I think that’s
probably a little bit weather family
kind of identified me with this – today
– who you were at that time also
absolutely he did do that so that’s
and it’s crazy because after all that I
still feel like the little intern that
still has more goals to accomplish I
mean we’re here today right and no
matter what the journey goes on I have
to continue creating my own gangster
right because I read this quote once and
it says when you’re not living your
passions you’re no good to the world
around you because you’re not being good
to yourself
so I myself to be good to myself I
encouraged you to be good to yourself
and to continue creating your own
gangster
