I wanted to share with you a
story that struck me a lot
It was the first day of a course
what I did a few years ago
The moment I entered the room, the
chairs were arranged in a circle
and the students just like me and I arriving
and sitting until the two
teachers read the text and stay in
silence
only that silence lasted for hours
everybody started to look without
understand what was happening and without
know what to do
some students even tried to propose
dynamic but not moving forward
because obviously the group expected a
teachers attitude
that silence from time to time is
interrupted by indignant comments
to be in that situation wasting time
I stepped out reflectively thinking what
should have done in that free time
because I was not able to do anything
I do when nobody has me.
telling me what I should do good at the time
I did this course, I worked at
of a multinational company and had
an anguish that accompanied me for years
I felt like I wasted my life on
a job that did not make sense to
me a thing that represented well this
my feeling was the mug that what
I used to work
I felt like this bird trapped in
a cage in how much time passed
once I commented this with the colleague and
he told me so tenile you saw
that the open cage door
Good, that door always, right?
I did not want to look at her much.
because I did not know what to do if I
get out of line
only one hour arrives when this situation
was unsustainable
I decided that I would give up this
cage I started saving money
plan a long trip that maybe
inspiration of what to do in the future
and when the countdown started
I kept imagining how wonderful the day is.
in which I am free to do
anything to be in any
place of the world
eh not so good
You know what I feel when you finally
I was free panic and affliction
that was not even the sensation
I just wanted to be on vacation.
certainties
I wanted answers I wanted one
directing a clear path that
gave guarantees
now see how interesting these
two experiences that the first day
of that course and this anguish of being
free signaled my total and
absolute lack of ability and dealing with
a situation where I had not
clear instructions to follow
where I needed to make choices and deal
with the consequences of these choices and
then you know that I started to remember and
maybe some of you will identify
Since I was a child, I never needed
make many choices
It was actually better that I did not want to
choose or question anything
the school gave me very clear instructions
how I behave and it only fits me
obey and then when I grew up
the scenario has obviously changed but some
things have remained very similar
I was still part of a structure
which in a way gave me clarity of
what to do and so I never felt
very lost I had a scope of
I have defined work schedules for
comply with the rules had to be followed
and that’s when I began to reflect on
the impact of the school system on
my adult life and I was curious
when you hear about innovative models
education that were emerging through
world
I went to search schools that were
precisely focused on a model of
teaching that develops skills and
attitudes and with this more individuals
autonomous and prepared for life I
I put two of these schools in the script
of travel that was beginning
I’m going from there to my trip
began to gain a clearer sense of
my first stop was in indonesia
there I spent a semester in a school
which has a very modest view
inspire your 40-year-old students to
different countries to take the lead
for a more sustainable world
not by case this school that calls the
risk lies in the middle of nature and the
is constructed of bamboo
but more than that what I found most
interesting is the fact that it does not exist
wall with no space in a room
class
there I realized walls are not only the
physical barriers but also
psychological and that space without walls
expands our possibilities allow
exploitation to the experimentation that
see how you look at the quantity of things
that I saw happening there daily
I felt the smell of food children
cooking the enthusiastic singing that
came from the theater room the sound of the drum
of the gamelan marimba but also had
silence of yoga class meditation
the care with the garden
there I saw small people debating the
big people subject
social issues on entering and thais are
worked on serious projects together with
the community and local NGOs and
times expressed by art through the
painting theater poetry
school and there was room for the most
different talents blossom then I
I stopped and thought how it would have been my
life
If I had studied in a school
how would that have not discovered
my talents my skills and
to my purpose sooner if I
had experienced all these
experiences
that is how learning
happens first experiencing the
experiences
Look what was happening with the
pre school class
the ants went in and ate their
snack
so the teacher
a cool idea let’s create a
restaurant for the ants out there
sometimes the children were euphoric
them all the time there to see if the
ants had already arrived until a
of them running away not being the great
discovery of your life the ant as
and as children
increase this learning through
experience it becomes more elaborate
had a group of students who was
researching the fin
shark that is carrying the
endangered animals
They went to the fish market to
see if this was real and when they arrived
encountered hundreds of sharks
who had been captured by
fishermen
they were shocked by that scene and
They began to reflect what he is not
the fish market and on the other side of the
world
it was happening very close
and this generated a sense of
responsibility a need to act
so the first thing they did
was to negotiate with the fishermen some
sharks that they have managed to
a sanctuary on an island nearby and then
drop back into the sea during the
cylinder diving
they also thought about how
generate other sources of income for
fishermen and to raise awareness
population to not consume the soup of
shark fin that was generating
this problem
another situation this teacher
the teacher a teacher called do not want
person with whom I was very fond of
talk at school he created a module
called utopia dystopia and put the
students in the condition of inhabitants of a
fictional society of the late 21st century
there they needed to find a role
in society finds ways to generate
income and deal with the uncertainties
emerged as the tsunami and the
refugees
there the name said that when it includes
the refugees in history he thought
the students to be super cozy
but instead came questions like
how much is it going to cost
I’ll have to give up my own
space then real debates will begin to
happen in the classroom about this
subject matter
and everyone realized that the problem was
much more complex and difficult to
resolve from what seemed simply
reading a newspaper story
after having experienced and witnessed
these and other stories in kun root
I went to India and there I spent a
month at a school called universide
where a program was founded that today
is in 45 countries and is a methodology
very simple four- step approach to
involve children in projects and
make these children the protagonists of
stories of change in the city of
gandhi lived for many years as well.
seeks inspiration in the idea of
individual responsibility that each
should promote in society the changes
What do you want for the world?
was happening in the first weeks
who was there I used transportation
together with the children and
teachers and I realized that all
days the 7th graders down a
two kilometers before school and one
truck with their backpacks
You know why this is one of them this way
value the work of drivers of
bus and in the beginning was fun
but the request is that the time began to
spend 30 days in which it rained others in
It was very sunny and began to
boring but that’s how they felt in
skin as was the life of so many children
in India that do not have access to
school transportation
during these weeks he called the
drivers for a conversation and did
Questions how many hours do you have?
work a day
what are the main ones when you
They like the work they do.
what are the main problems that
you face during work and
in this conversation they discovered three
things that scream the bus put the
arm out the window and paste
chewing gum under the seat were things
which definitely did not please the
drivers from there their mission
was to review their behavior and
also encourage colleagues from other
classes
is the same but after hearing these
stories may be that some of you
are still thinking more and so
what results in practice suggest
so I’ll share a great
story of two students who are globe
school that founded in 2013 a project
called nalu this is a brand of clothes
socially and ecologically sound
organic production
but more than that this enterprise
and 50% of the profit reverted to the
buying children’s uniforms in india
who would otherwise need to leave the
school
I talked to Dale who is one of the
and she told me this conversation
the main challenges that had to
that he was having during this one since
she started the project and the things that
more like to do that was to create the
pieces of clothing because she loves fashion
talk to people and encourage
colleagues to do what they love and
Most satisfying of all when she sees
the happiness of the children in India
receive these uniforms at the end of
our conversation with your wisdom
peak of his 15 years
She tells me about the importance of people.
do what you love because that is the
better to the world and ask me why
if we do not do this, what is the meaning of
life
I thrilled me this conversation with
I was thinking about the power of this
education that drives children to act
from an early age and act to change the world
what is the magic behind an education
that reveals talents develops
abilities makes the children put
in the place of others
generates reflection and moves by questioning
The action for me was evident
importance of actual experiences in
real life but rather people
be accommodated with ready – made and
grows surrounded by uncertainties
how many opportunities that require a
first step in the dark
we can waste it during our
adult life from the fear of the unknown
for not being sure that the results
will arise from our actions and thus
people can be paralyzed by
decisions and opportunities that are
important in our life.
if I had waited for certainties
would probably still be unhappy
doing what I did
although in the comfort of my cage
but I would have wasted 500 days of
a trip where I could experience other
cultures, which broadened my notion of
right and wrong to know these schools
that expanded my vision not only
about education is about life facing
new professional challenges that
constantly generate comfort
continuous growth that makes me feel
live makes me feel that I’m evolving and
maybe the most important of all
learn to live with fears uncertainties
and realize that this does not stop me anymore
But because if we look at it, it’s okay.
Everything is changing Everything is turning
constantly
what guarantees do we really have in
a world that is going through fast and
constant transformations
now I know that the true feeling of
security does not sell any cages come
of confidence in our own wings
comes from the certainty that we are capable of
learn and reinvent
how many times it takes a lot
thank you
