hello everyone how’s everyone doing
come on I need a bit more energy good
hi guys my name is Safi kiss condom I am
32 years old this year I was born and
raised in Penang I am a musician I play
guitar for a pen coach in Stockholm have
you heard of coaching grass and I wanted
to cook and I see raising hands Wow Wow
three people thanks so we’ve been around
since 2007 but I only joining the monkey
I was quite late and I’m also in another
band called producer now that man is new
so if you haven’t heard of the band it’s
understandable and I’m also involved in
other musical projects like I play
guitar for other musicians
I play guitar for my girlfriend who’s
also a musician and and aside from that
I am also a graphic designer I design
work I I found a denim brand called para
jeans that you guys heard of the regions
anyone here is wearing a pair of jeans
or any pair jeans product Michael that’s
a disappointment but um the reason why I
brought these two facts about myself
today is because I wanna highlight about
culture and how culture is very
important for a person who is who’s
involved in the creative scene who
dabbles in the whole any created being a
CEO who who likes to be creative who
likes to draw like there you go so would
you agree with me that culture plays a
very important part right
in fact I like to see culture as my
campus
you know whenever before I write a song
for instance I’ll think about how this
song is gonna impact my culture my song
all would my product hey my culture to a
whole new level when I’m about to design
a t-shirt portaloo jeans for instance
hence why if you know these studied
jeans has a lot of Malaysian graphic and
images because I would like to be back
culture because I believe ultimately as
a creative person you want to create a
bump on your culture right everyone’s
okay with me so far
okay so today I want to talk about the
canvas itself meaning our culture
there’s a hole in the canvas okay
now being a crazy person like myself
it’s really hard for us to expand our
creativity to really go all out when
there’s a hole in the canvas again and
that problem and probably I’m gonna
highlight today is in fact about old
okay growing up being malicious I’m sure
most of us are familiar with seeing
things such as images like that where
our own local magazines featured Western
looking women or men on our fashion run
weeks we see more Western looking or you
look in look at individuals rather than
local looking once right so we get
Charlie more and places need big very
rested to sort of like DP luxury or
commune right names like Valencia which
are but as it’s all local at all doesn’t
it pick what our culture is really about
you guys agree with me right princess
like that you’re supposed to admit
luxurious and lifestyle but it’s
and then you have local brands who
disguise themselves not to be malicious
like friends like bogna british india
are definitely polished but then they
tend to highlight slogans of that lines
there are not malicious for the longest
time a lot of our customers were
confused on the originals and a lot of
us were very surprised to find out that
they are actually religion bony-ass
factory is it Chuck’s oh and okay this
is my favorite one last but not least
our take on Christmas and Halloween in
Malaysia it’s all what like our
Christmas is all what we’ve never
experienced snow at all haven’t we right
and then there’s Halloween that’s
definitely not our form or horror as we
keep growing up with stories like a
Porto but ya nah right and it suddenly
you see like company boy from pom-poms
we call Dracula and it’s it’s Yuri the
laugh is very reasonable so I guess it
comes to a point where I would like to
mas myself and everyone to ask ourselves
why why they wear things like this
happening why are we so flooded with
Weston or European or even American
culture here instead of ours why are
there no realistic representation of
what we really are
have you guys ever asked that question
right what’s wrong with our culture why
is it not seen as something that is
marketable or commercial okay so I’m
sure they’re like thousands of reasons
why but one of the main factor that I
would like to highlight today when it
comes to consumerism and the influence
of consumer is already I’m going to take
these two brands I’m gonna illustrate
the power of list okay the power of
being first with these two brands which
are called and Kodak I’m sure you guys
have a video with the friends okay
they’ve been here in Malaysia
ever since before even when they come
okay so every week on our independence
the Malaysian eyes they open like
Appalachian branch and in a Kogi family
militias never opened up as a
distributing outlet and Azores Kodak but
what’s interesting about these two
brands is that they always we keep the
woods for the product that they
represented you guys have heard that
before right
like I remember when I was going out my
folks in the campo would refer to piece
as cookie even though it is a different
friend right and she was killed for the
longest time religions we put pill as
correct right and if you think really
hard about it those actually became
woods they actually replaced our words
they had a potential to replace our
actual words that’s the power of being
close okay you guys go into a bar
alright now a lot of this big place has
a lot to do with industrialization of
course so a lot of Western brands a lot
of European brands American brands I
mean industrialization happened in the
Europe in the American Europe in the
17th between 1760 to 1840
ok and that’s when a lot of brands email
they figure out how to manufacture
things faster they manage to export
things out hence why we see a lot of
brands in Southeast Asia Western brands
in Southeast Asia and now our oldest to
have a look at our industrialization
which only started 1917 so that’s like
200 years apart
you see hence why we are being affected
so much by how things are what why pigs
are so Western and European overkill
it’s in the rivals of our disciplines
and they bring the products they bring
about these ones and they suggest
lifestyles and slogans and also
ideologies that are not necessarily
similar to us but it happen it sells
better for them it ancillary cells to
them accorded audience the message
across
so for the longest time Winston brands
cannot penetrate the infiltrating our
countries in a good way but of course at
the same time they take any impact that
it brought as well it’s very unsafe for
our culture for instance without
realizing it militias have a very
westernized idea of beauty our our our
definition of beauty is very first as we
tend to adopt or we have adopted the
Renaissance and the Roman eight ideal on
our definition of beauty and so I hit
Malaysia a lot of us still see evidence
of cosmetic brands selling if I want any
product right because you all want to be
white and we also see good sales in hair
straightening products for instance
because we don’t want to have Kody yet
there’s men to our hand to be Street but
Kendall Jenner’s by Kim Kardashian cut
that lenses and contact menses for
instance you know any sort of product
that takes us away from our culture and
and it’s also it affects a lot of us in
a very negative way especially the
younger generations being represented in
DC it feels like you know there’s
something that we need to do to change
right so all of us have you know how do
we fix this anyone has any idea okay I
have no idea so I mean I have no idea
and I don’t even have the slightest idea
to even spot but I guess realizing the
problem we with the first step have I
managed to meet you guys realize I’m
sure you guys have realized about this
long before right
now how I mean I’m sure it’s impossible
to get everyone to not like quested
products or to love simply love whatever
that we have really loved right think
it’s impossible for me to not like white
people
my good man which is pathetic or you
know and I can’t I surely can’t get you
guys to do that but I can tell you what
you guys can do now is to have a list
okay let’s have a local list and let’s
have an international list that way we
are not comparing what we have to what’s
already established and has all the
resources to expand itself that we the
company that the comparison becomes more
thing don’t you guys agree so you guys
can fill up the list with for instance
you know be repair what’s your favorite
local then what’s your international
people that way you are also seen as
someone who is very well informed about
not only the European Western culture
but also your culture is it that a great
thing besides that you can also have
like a fashion brand list you can mix a
batch local and international so my part
is to say that
it’s not about to separate what you like
and you don’t like is to expand what you
like or find more reasons to like more
things
please do not overlook what our country
has to offer
offer what the locals in our country has
so with that all I can say let’s patch
up the canvas let’s create like a
healthy environment for canvas and also
follow three needs to grow without like to say thank you and have a pleasant
come on I need a bit more energy good
