out of suffering have emerged the
strongest salt the most massive
characters are seared with scars I’m a
Middle Eastern woman and I have been
living independently for the last five
years which is in my culture which
should add in my culture three questions
I’ve been always greeted with are you
married who do you live with where’s
your family
I don’t I don’t think that I know how
much my heart rips when answering all
these questions so let me take you on a
journey I woke up in a nightmare and I’m
still in it but somehow in a time of
such sorrow and pain mine was a story of
hope community and connection Syria
my home my family were lost it was like
overnight the cradle of civilizations of
religions of science
Oh specular a Middle Eastern culture a
shelter for refugees who escaped words a
home for all those who lost tears my
soul mates dr. Muhammad obeyed who lost
his life saving other Syrians when the
ambulance he was in was targeted by an
explosive barrel bomb had motivated me
to walk in his steps and to try to carry
on what he started
I began working with children in the
camps it distracted me from my grief
from my guilt I was a lot of losing my
family as I helped me to escape Syria
when I was wanted by the Syrian regime
for my activism
I started volunteering focusing on the
hope and these children this little
brave kids who have went through so much
who have lost their childhood their
homes their limbs they helped me more
than I helped them they helped me to
heal when I came to Canada I was amazed
by its beautiful diversity which gave me
another reason to stay strong later I
became a bridge helping generous
Canadian family sponsors communicate
with Syrian newcomers I did this in the
newcomer kitchen where we cut Syrian
traditional food for our Canadian
community
and I’m doing this with livelihood
project where I host tasty tours and
Kensington Market and I make Syrian
coffee and tea and share our traditions
as I breathe life into my lost community
and culture and here is another reason
that keeps me strong the support I have
the emotional support I have from all
the guests that come by in the tours
this
[Applause]
every night I’m haunted by that
nightmares and images of how my loved
ones were killed every day I suffer from
emotional and chronic physical pain due
to my PTSD and my invisible illness
fibromyalgia but I keep fighting through
it I keep fighting through my conscious
self-care and by trying to support all
those who are in need at least if this
little precious Souls who are struggling
every single day with an endless hope of
a better tomorrow so can all of us
regardless the trauma we all face let’s
be there unheard voices let’s not look
away from them and be brave enough to
bring happiness and peace to all those
affected by the ongoing horrific war
three they may be strange to people of
my culture I am proud to be here
I’m proud to be a survivor Arab
independent woman
and I’m sure my family are proud of me
now I’m never alone Thank You Kara for
letting this uploaded Jasmine’s my
blossom again
[Applause]
