SOCIOLOGY – Max Weber

“Sociology”
Max Weber
Max Weber is one of the philosophers most capable of explaining the distinctive economic system in which we live, called capitalism
He was born in Erfurt, Germany in 1864.
He grew up to see his country shaken by the dramatic changes of the industrial revolution
The cities were exploding
Great companies based
And a new administrative elite that replaced the old aristocracy
Weber spent his life analyzing these changes
He has developed some basic ideas in which we can better understand the work and future of capitalism
Why did you find capitalism?
The typical view is that capitalism was seen as a result of technological development, especially steam
But Weber suggests something interesting
That what made capitalism possible is a set of ideas
Specifically religious ideas
Not just any religious ideas
Capitalism was created by Protestantism
Specifically Calvinism
In his great work “The Protestant Creation and the Spirit of Capitalism” published in 1905
Weber explained some of the reasons for his belief that Protestant Christianity was very important for capitalism
1) The Protestants make us feel guilty
In Weber’s analysis, the lives of Catholics are relatively easier
They could confess their sins at regular intervals and the priests could cleanse them
But there are no similar methods of purification for Protestants
Who believe that only God is capable of pardoning anyone
He will not reveal his intentions until the day of reckoning
Until that day, Weber claims that the Protestants suffer a high degree of anxiety
As well as a sinful desire throughout their lives to prove their devotion to a strict, open but silent Lord
2) The Lord loves hard work
Weber feels that the guilt of Protestants has turned into a mania of hard work
This is what he called the creation of Protestant work
The sins of Adam can only be erased by persistent hardship
It is no coincidence that holidays and rest days were lower in Protestantism, for the Lord does not like the time of rest
3) All holy work
Catholics limited their understanding of the sacred work of the activities of pastors, monks and nuns
But the Protestants declared that any act of any kind might be performed in the name of the Lord
Including jobs such as baker or accountant
This gave a new and serious moral force to all branches of professional life
4) for the benefit of the community and not the family
In Catholic countries the family was and still is everything
But the Protestants took a less charitable look at the family.
The family may be a refuge for selfish and self-motivated motives
For the early Protestants, a person has to direct his energies without selfishness towards society as a whole
The public sphere, where justice and dignity are all deserved
5) There are no miracles
Protestantism and ultimately scientific capitalism turned its back on miracles
Weber calls this to rid the world of illusion
If prosperity is not something that the Lord spends vaguely,
It can only be the result of thinking systematically, acting honestly and working hard and rationally for years to come
Without faith in miracles, people turn to science for interpretations and changes
Which encouraged scientific research and discovery
And ultimately the technical boom.
Together, these five factors, in Weber’s view, created the crucial catalysts for the consolidation of capitalism
Marx argued that religion is the opium of peoples
Anesthetic to induce negative acceptance of capital outrages
But Weber turned this opinion upside down
Capitalists did not endure because of religion
They became capitalists only as a result of their religion
2 – How can you develop capitalism around the world?
There are about thirty-five countries, where capitalism is developed
It probably works best in Germany
Where Weber watched her for the first time
But for the hundred and sixty-one remaining states it can be said that they never work well
This is a source of much puzzlement and distress
Has transformed billions of dollars in aid each year from rich to poor regions of the world
But weberly tells us that these physical interventions will never work
Because the problem is not actually physical beginning
Instead, some countries fail for Faber to succeed in capitalism
Because they do not feel anxious and guilty enough
They trust greatly in miracles
They like to celebrate now instead of investing tomorrow
They feel that it is acceptable to steal from society, to enrich their families
They prefer the clan to the nation
Today, Weber will advise those who would like to spread capitalism
To focus on our synonym for religion – culture
It is the behavior of the nation, its hopes and sense of life
Which produces a thriving economy
To reduce poverty, Weber says it is necessary to start from the level of ideas
What the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund should give to sub-Saharan Africa
It is not, in the Fibery analysis, money and technique
But a new horizon
The critical question for an economy is not what inflation should be
But what is presented today on television
How can we change the world?
Weber was writing in the era of revolution
He also wanted things to change
But he believed that one must first understand how political power works
Weber believed humanity passed through three different kinds of power
Ancient societies have worked according to what they call “traditional authority”
Where kings relied on folklore and theology to justify their influence
Then came the era of “charismatic authority”
Where a heroic person, most notably Napoleon,
Access to power with a magnetic character
And change everything with passion and will
But Weber explained that we have now entered into a third era of “bureaucratic authority”
The bureaucracy checks its power with knowledge.
Only bureaucrats know how things work
The intruder will need years to find out
Most of us simply surrender, to the benefit of existing power
The dominance of the bureaucracy has great consequences for anyone trying to change a nation
There is usually a misleading but understandable desire
To believe that the leader must be changed only
But in fact removing the leader has never had the desired effect
If we want things to go better
Most of this has to come through bureaucratic processes that seem to be somewhat dramatic
Will come across the order of the statistical directory,
Brief summary of ministers, certificates in committee sessions,
And the careful study of budgets
Weber tells us how power works now
It reminds us that ideas may be far more important than tools or money in changing nations
It is a very significant thesis
Under Weber’s guidance, we learn that much of what we associate is external, impersonal, and large
It really depends on something totally intimate and probably more flexible
Ideas in our own minds.
