These Mountains Cannot Be Conquered Easily | National Geographic

so up here in Grand Teton National Park
and working on a project all winter
shooting team outing for National
Geographic this winter what I wanted to
do was the speed each of the main
summits of the Teton skyline one of the
main objectives is the GU ski the grand
this B crucible of ski mountaineering in
North America if all goes well we’ll get
up there tomorrow right now looks good
if we were up there right now I bet we’d
be going to the top but but the forecast
is is not great which is typical kind of
shocking how big the pack considering
it’s a little more than I want to carry
I’m done there’s no ski Mountaineer that
I know who doesn’t want to get the grand
oh yeah
I sent the last 15 years living in
Jackson Hole Wyoming it’s such a
dramatic kind of jagged skyline it
almost feels like the Tetons were built
for skiing there are these just really
beautiful lines coming off of all of the
high summits
and
being in the mountains for me is a lot
about the partnerships and the
friendships when I thought about doing
this project kid Deloitte it was the
first person on the list
she is Jackson local two-time women’s
free skiing world champion I skied Mount
Everest with her as well and she’s a
very strong ski Mountaineer mark 7 and I
have been on multiple expeditions around
the world
mark has really established himself as
one of the greatest exploratory big wall
climbers of his generation going up Rock
pitches with ski boots on and skis on
your back is a little bit intimidating
as we’re driving up it goes yeah people
follow their deaths on that every year
it was like oh great I think marks a bit
surprised about how big these mountains
are and how steep and vertical they are
what happens is as you lean in to like
get a hold the tips of the skis of a
tendency to jam in not only is it
challenging because you have to do these
technical climbs you’re also carrying
ropes climbing equipment sleeping bags
food and then there’s the ski descent
it’s basically no fall zone terrain
where you wipeout in you lose control
you potentially fall off a cliff it
strips everything away things are really
simple out there that decisions are very
real this very condition is dependent
and when I talk about conditions that
means snow pack aspect which way it’s
facing how it’s being affected by the
Sun whenever you have warm days cold
nights we’ve got a real big heating of
the snowpack and higher likelihood that
something will pop and it’s no packing
they’ll have an avalanche my concerns
are that we crossed some really really
wet snow with insane thousands of feet
of exposure below it I couldn’t want to
get out of here
in the mountains there are life
situations that are dangerous if they’re
going to put their time and effort
potentially risk their lives I’m doing
something they want to make sure that
you’re going to get it and that’s a lot
of pressure that’s the kind of thing
keeps me up at night
snowed like eight inches last night it’s
not stopping oh man to do climbing with
heavy packs it’s a lot but it’s even
more forgiving than it is for kid not
because he’s carrying more equipment and
he’s generally covering more ground
is basically like a mountain goat all I
have to do is climb and ski something
he’s got this whole other mental threat
happening for him it’s really hard to
keep the lens clean up here I’ll have to
move faster and sometimes farther to get
into position or even to look to see if
a photo angle is good shit animal
yeah we’re get up dudes on a mission I’m
really looking to get a shot that I
haven’t seen before
one of the roots up the grand is the
stetner Chevy Ford cars it’s kind of
like a secret passageway that goes up
through the mountain the lines and the
architecture of that route are really
stunning
this is definitely
my happy place
I would like to say that I think Jimmy
got an all time photo of the Crocs ice
balled in the Chevy four and I think
that that photo reveals how amazing it
is to do ski mountaineering here in the
Tetons
the brand it’s always a challenge it’s
never give me
it’s a huge honour to be able to go out
there and be back down and share it with
friends the best days the ones where you
really don’t think things are going to
come together and every kind of Bend
because you persevered you’re getting
like this little gem to work with
you
