Robert Ballard: Painting the Titanic | Nat Geo Live

now what’s interesting about my
experience with the Titanic was on my
first dive I came in right here we came
around the corner and we came in on on
right on the bilge keel a forward of the
forward of the right about a beam of the
bridge down at the base and what it
struck me at that time was the paint the
antifouling paint on the Titanic is
still working at that time of 75 years
old the Titanic had been underwater for
75 years and the antifouling paint was
still working on the hull see they never
thought the Titanic would sink so they
didn’t paint it above the waterline so
the rust that’s coming down is coming
from the unpainted surface but the
actual painted surface is still fine so
what I’m proposing to do and I’m
applying for a permit to know his office
to clean and paint the Titanic now
people think I’m crazy
children ask what color and we’ve
actually had I’ve had a long discussion
I probably talked several hundred
children about what color we should
paint the Titanic and they think that
painting it the original black would not
be appropriate that we should paint it
the way she is now but just with
antifouling paint so it won’t change now
how are we going to do this it’s done
all the time
this is how they do it on big ships they
have these little cleaners robotic
cleaners that actually attached to the
ship through magnets so they put them on
them and the ship can literally ride up
and down and clean the hull of the ship
not only do they have this technology
now they also have it in underwater
applications because super tankers
supertankers cannot dry dock after
they’ve been launched there longer than
a football field
we don’t have shipyards large enough to
take super tankers there’s now acrylic
paint antifouling acrylic paint they can
be applied and hardened underwater so I
personally find it a piece of cake
you don’t let the historical site
rot and so I’m convinced I can do this
and so I’m going to do it thank you
you know anyway
