RI Finalist | National Geographic Bee 2012

hi my name is Max Lavigne and I’m in
sick
great at the wheeler school I’m 12 years
old and I live right here in Providence
Rhode Island the creative capital as
they call it some sites that you should
visit if you see if you happen to come
to Providence would be right over there
the First Baptist Church in America
the old Union Station
Kennedy Plaza
the resting museum the State House and
the broken drawbridge on the east side a
National Geographic did you know that
this dome right here is the largest
marble self-supporting dome in the world
after st. Paul’s Cathedral the Minnesota
State Capitol and the Taj Mahal if i can
trade places with any famous world
leader i would trade places with Mahatma
Gandhi because i think his philosophy is
the rightful awesome if i had a free
trip and ticket to go anywhere in the
world where would I go if I had a free
ticket to go anywhere in the world I
would visit Nepal Bhutan and Tibet I’d
really like to see the Himalayas and the
cultures of Nepal Bhutan and Tibet
really interests me the place that I’d
like to go most out of the whole trip is
potala palace in Lhasa and the tiger
monastery in Bhutan however the coolest
place that I’ve ever been to I think was
volcán de Messiah in Nicaragua I looked
into the creator of the active volcano
and I brought back these rocks from the
volcano these rocks are called pumice
and they’re able to float these are all
volcanic substance rocks how do i cram
all that knowledge into my head the
answer is simple I have maps everywhere
I have atlases I have geography books I
think Matt placemats I have wall maps
maps everywhere I mean reading geography
questions out of a book is good but you
only get those questions if you read
just a map and try to memorize things
you’ll know so much more
hey National Geographic you know I think
that if I was in charge of the earth for
one whole day and I had to change things
I would help the world out of the
problem of global warming see now some
of the things that I do is build more
train routes and metro lines and cities
so people could use public transit a lot
more and i’d put restrictions on cars
and the garbage that people make people
could use trains and be happy just like
the one that should be coming soon hey
National Geographic let me see if I can
stump you on this question what country
rather than a currency mainly used a
barter system until the 1960s can you
guess and the answer is bhutan you know
I don’t really have any favorite
geography fact in general but there sure
are a couple of cool ones like did you
know that this stayed right here is the
only state that has a chicken as its
tapered it’s called the Rhode Island Red
my favorite town name though is a town
in Wales it’s called
problem shanta CEO robocalls kumari or
in English st. Mary’s Church in the
hollow of the white hazel near the rapid
whirlpool near the church of st. Cecilia
of the red k speaking of Justin cities
this is our own City Hall
here we are at the Van Winkle gates at
Brown University now speaking of
universities I knew that I’ve still got
a long time to decide what I want to
pick up when I grow up and I’m still
making some choices but I think that
maybe I’d like to be a geography
professor at a university like this one
though come to think of it there are
lots of other cool jobs that I’d like
like baby a shittier rail plan
in our architects
building why thanks for watching
