Portraits of Women Scientists | National Geographic

I didn’t know any scientists growing up
I can’t think of a female role model
that I had or people to look to who were
portrayed in that way then it was cool
that it was even sexy to be a woman
scientist my mom said you’re so outgoing
and there’s many different interests why
would you want to be stuck in a lab I
always remember that that I wasn’t cut
out for science because scientists were
introverts that’s what we think the
ideas were outnumbered this documentary
photography project came from high
school girls I was asked to be a
panelist at a women in science event for
high schoolers and I spoke to some of
the other panelists and they all have
the same experience facing gender biases
stereotypes discrimination and I
realized that the best way to motivate
young girls to get into the sciences is
to show women the strong I’m targeting
with this project women who really break
your idea of what that woman in science
is we have a man who totally tatted up
races competitively but she also studies
nanotechnology young girls pursuing
science thank you
yeah all right instead of playing
dress-up these girls are my science cans
you got sneaks in there playing with
rocks doing pretty good we’ve got
another scientist who’s out in the field
every day like in the swamps and doing
things like – man wouldn’t you
this is really not an issue of education
but of motivation and confidence and
that’s something we can change with
photography and multimedia we can
generate confidence through images hi
Google women in science you get a bunch
of images of women with beakers no
either I mean yes that it’s that’s part
of what I do of course but what I really
wanted to do is show women in the field
gave a hands dirty because that’s my
experience I don’t identify with that
