Photographer Swims With Huge Goliath Groupers | National Geographic

it’s mid-august and the goliaths begin
to gather in the shipwrecks
the caves the ledges on the east coast
of Florida
I love these fish they remind me of my
family like my uncle Johnny from New
Jersey slow metabolism sitting on a
couch looking at me with two turret eyes
back and forth back and forth
I love these fish at times the Goliath
groupers would be obscured by enormous
schools of cigar minnows
they were like silvery curtains and as
you approach them the curtains would
lift and surround and encase the
groupers to dive here is always
difficult
the visibility changes and the currents
change and then all of a sudden here’s a
shipwreck and then here is this enormous
herd of these ancient Goliath the
Goliath’s are here for one reason it is
time to spawn they have to wait for the
right time the right tide the right moon
you
