Mick the Baker | National Geographic

on the road Mick will have to scrounge
and barter for every scrap of food he
can it is so before he goes he plans to
cook up enough to get him started yeah
welcome to the bakery on the whole using
minimal ingredients and his Dutch oven
Mick will cook up a cracker type bread
known as hardtack yeah unlikely to spoil
and nutritious hardtack was a common
ration during the Civil War and it was a
staple for early pioneers on long
expeditions
does he like bread yes sir let’s get it
done to cook up hardtack of his home
Mick will build an oven under the sand
the first step digging a hole large
enough to submerge his pot in the ground
welcome to the whole cooking class put
in four cups of flour round about and so
then you’re in the water then you put in
a dab of oil for little sweetness has
some honey let’s start mixing yeah do
you want to lick the spoon so what I do
is just make up a lot of coals in the
ashen dumping in the bottom pot will go
right down in here put this Bart I don’t
smother out the coals and cover it back
up ass and that’s it the mother earth
oven the hardtack cooks under the hot
coals and sand and after only one hour
it’s time to take his bread out of the
oven whoa yes done looks good
mmm really good though this hardtack
will only feed him for a few days it’s
enough to get him going guys ready
