Leg 5: Marty Raney | National Geographic

hey broseph here’s a stick here’s my
fire there’s the safety way up another
hill dicking around anyway yeah we’re in
the valley of ten thousand smokes it
doesn’t get any better than this of
course when Willie first visited here it
was the value of 11,000 smokes but
another thing that bothers me left green
valley I don’t think about this mean how
do you know there’s 10,000 I mean today
I countered about 40 I’m going to try to
count every single one of these
volcanoes dormant of course and see if
there is in fact 10,000 but we landed
and it was the moonscape you know the
moon is 238 thousand miles away but
who’s keeping track and it feels like
you’re on the moon the pilot told me
they tested one of those lunar
four-wheel-drive chalmers then they took
to the Moon or Mars or coo coo cachoo
frickin knit one purl two anyway they
they tested it right here right where
I’m sitting because this is a volcanic
ash total lunar landscape ish but it is
Alaska so these mountains go up and up
and up and are covered with snow we
might get snowed on tonight who knows
and that’s day one so we everybody was
worried about water we found a little
trickle man these guys are amazing this
guy right here and this guy made a dog
on reverse osmosis water system that’s
right reverse osmosis
and out of a it was amazing you wouldn’t
even understand we saw three sets of
bear tracks right here where we’re
standing HISHE one set of wolf tracks
and it’s this is it man we got four or
five days of that way 25 miles or
something to just explore and enjoy and
absorb and soak in and live breathe eat
taste touch feel and try to subsist and
survive in this total lunar landscape
anyway it’s amazing wish you were here
