I have no idea how planes fly I have no
idea how anything flies who knows about
why things fly NASA the National
Association of spectacular astronaut
people I met with Al Bowers he is the
chief scientist at the Armstrong Flight
Research Center at Edwards Air Force
Base in California al knows how things
fly believe that what is flying flight
is where you have a vehicle that is
interacting with the air goes around the
vehicle and because of that flow it
creates lift let’s say this is a side
view of an airplane wing okay now do
bird’s wings do this yeah absolutely
okay okay go so that the air meets the
leading edge of a wing right in the air
that goes over the top has to go further
okay then the air that goes underneath
yeah and so it has to go faster that
would push it down
no the lift is created by the movement
of the air over the object David can I
show you a really cool simple
demonstration this better be a good
demonstration has never been interrupted
before let’s do this so what we want to
do to simulate a wing is to accelerate
air over the top yeah and have
relatively still air on the bottom okay
just blow across the top of the piece of
paper
oh it’s raising up that’s the same as
that’s how an airplane flies yep you’re
actually sucking everybody watching at
home go get a piece of paper right now
and do what big red said something okay
and frankly you know what I’m going to
justify that interruption wait a minute
airplanes that have jets the jet doesn’t
lift the plane the jet jet just gets the
plane going fast enough to trick the air
into lifting the planes active that’s
how Jets work that’s how all airplanes
work except for rockets right who cares
about ROI you know I was trying to go to
the moon there’s nothing up there
