my Halleck Cesare unab ducted and my
legs are not very strong so I’ll never
be able to climb a tree the way a lemur
does but I still want to get up in that
Magnolia so I’m gonna learn from the
best human climbers the Veck and Thomas
may look like j.crew models but they’re
actually biological anthropologists who
research tree climbing techniques of
indigenous people in Malaysian jungles
so these people are climbing trees to
get food mostly honey what’s so great
about honey that they’re climbing up so
high to get honey so honey is one of the
most energy dense foods in nature
it’s basically pure sugar imagine living
in a tropical rainforest what are you
gonna find that sweet all those birds
those brightly colored birds look like
skittles so I wasn’t actually aware of
this until we filmed the segment but it
totally makes sense of course which is
that the one thing that all indigenous
climbing styles have in common is you’ve
got to be barefoot like hi what kind of
feet are the best feet to have for tree
climbing your feet look pretty flat
which might help you by getting more
surface area on the tree and help
prevent you from slipping but it may
also be hard to fit the contour of the
tree let’s do it teach me us technique
so the first technique is what’s called
the Frog technique or in the other
language that of these people it’s
called pinball all these people have
different tree climbing techniques and
they all have names like frog technique
this is one of the aspects that speaks
to how important tree climbing is in
their lives we only have one word for
climbing climbing right but they have
several words right so denote the
different styles it’s like martial arts
movies where they’re like oh he defeated
me with crane style exactly I said Vivek
and Tomas you guys are now my tree
climbing sensei’s teach me all the ways
of climbing a tree and also show me
videos you shot of people in the
rainforest climbing trees so I can know
if I’m doing it correctly
first up frog style press your feet flat
up against the tree like that look at
how you’re put it’s just like just do
that on the other side and then
basically just go upward jumping like a
frog well let me try
so the key here is being flexible so
these parts of your legs this rotate
down yeah basically like that Wow
next Chang would style this is where
you’re basically gonna walk up a tree oh
yes I am yeah yeah there you go
and lastly no-name style mystery style
there’s no father to this style so the
final style involves getting your big
toe around the tree but it’s good
watch no-name style there you go now
please yes this type of tree climbing is
extremely physically demanding yeah
there’s a lot of coordination and
stability involved but isn’t this
interesting look at Ray our sound guy
every time we shot in the woods Ray
would just get up in a tree and dominate
it why can’t I climb like that I thought
the answer was because Ray was small and
strong like a loris but it turns out the
answer is even more depressing nobody
who is a really good tree climber in
these villages is older than like 25
years old really so you have to learn
before you’re 25 or you’ll never get it
so we don’t need to make the rest of
this episode
