Foot Fear | National Geographic

welcome back to duck quacks don’t echo
the show where we compete for bragging
rights with off-the-wall experiments and
our studio audience votes on whose facts
they like the most and now I’ve got a
fact
that could give some of you out there
cold feet literally because that’s my
fact when we are scared our feet
actually get colder so that expression
about getting cold feet that’s based on
science that’s a real thing
fear right right what my feet smell of
fear I have smelled your feet and that’s
not fear its death it’s true okay it’s
time to scare the crap out of someone in
the name of science we’ve all heard the
expression about getting cold feet but
what do feet have to do with us being
afraid is this just a bit of poetic
license or does being scared actually
make the temperature of our Tootsie’s
head south the body’s fight or flight
response is triggered when we are afraid
and that has a biochemical component to
it in essence it reduces the flow of
blood to the extremities by constricting
the veins and capillaries and moves the
flow away from the hands and feet with
less blood flow there’s less heat to
prove this we needed a few things some
scary stuff a thermographic camera and
someone to scare meat max aya a pre-med
student in New York City who claims I
don’t scare easily well we’ll see about
that max aya we placed Maxia in a
special chair setup to get her up close
and personal with some very scary things
