Exploring Mars in Utah | National Geographic

yeah ready
all right if you want to suspend you
know reality for a bit you can really
feel like you’re actually on Mars and
you look out at this arid red landscape
and it really feels like you’ve traveled
to a new world
crew 138 has come here for a variety of
different reasons in general we’re all
interested in understanding what it
would be like to do research or to even
live on planet Mars and this is a
simulation site
[Music]
the local environment here is very
mars-like and it’s probably one of the
closest simulations that we’re going to
find to what an actual Mars surface
mission would be like here on earth now
what makes this thing so unique is that
you have changes in elevation you have a
lot of the same elements around in terms
of the geologic formations and some of
the terrain advantages that you would
experience on a true extra vehicular
activity or what we refer to as eb8
so if you remember back to the Apollo
days the astronauts conducted various
types of EVs
the same thing is going to happen when
we put boots on Mars so what I’m
interested in here particularly in
particular the Mars as a research
station is trying to replicate some of
those tasks that these crew members
might perform on the surface of Mars and
to try to better understand or
characterize the human performance
requirements for being able to
successfully complete these tasks and
then can I take those back to the
laboratory at NASA Johnson Space Center
replicate those in a more controlled
environment for a baseline and then come
out here and have a really high fidelity
analog
we’re using a quadcopter as an air
reconnaissance vehicle to help us
determine the best routes to get over a
mountainous terrain or through a valley
for example if we’re doing an e VA and
we’re either on a rover or by foot and
we come upon some terrain that looks
difficult to cross if we want to explore
what’s on the other side and then we can
send up the quadcopter to take some
pictures and images and then we can
return to the base to the hab and
evaluate those images and then the next
day we can use what we found in our
evaluations to determine a way to get
across that terrain to do further
research on the other side the e VA suit
is both interesting and incredibly
uncomfortable when you’re breathing in
the helmet it’s almost like you can’t
get a full breath of air but you have to
just keep reminding yourself that there
is enough air if you’re claustrophobic I
would not recommend it and there’s a
little bit of extra weight so you
fatigue a little quicker than you
usually would living in the habitat has
been pretty fun for me there is quite a
bit of space for everybody even though
it seems like it’s very small the habit
self is very very simple the crew
members themselves have been really
fantastic it’s a great bunch of people
coming from different parts of the world
different backgrounds and yet we all
seem to be able to harmonize
it seems that we’ve all found a common
bond in this margin is at research
station and the mission to to get humans
to Mars and how are we going to do that
well first and foremost it’s going to
require people to work as a team
