Episode 3: The China Ivory Market | Battle for the Elephants

our investigation is revealing insights
into the ivory trade why elephant
numbers are falling to lower levels than
ever recorded an international ban on
trading ivory has been in place since
1989 but since then the international
body that governs the trade known as
psyches has allowed two large auctions
and stockpiled ivory a luxury goods
store in Beijing allowed our cameras
into their showroom where Brian Christie
explains how those auctions complicate
what’s for sale legally and what’s not
most of what we’re seeing here
presumably comes from the 2008 African
ivory auction and would all be legal the
problem is that auction has given a
cover to illegal traders across China
illegal ivory is flooding into China in
part because of this legal ivory
offering cover wetting the appetite when
you see this acceptable over here and
who’s the distinguish between what’s
legal and illegal in the marketplace
hello hi I’m Brian Amy
nice to meet you let’s do these are
beautiful pieces each one has a card can
we look at the card for this one to
allow the sale of ivory in China this
site ease requires that any carving
larger than a trinket must have a photo
ID card so this is a photo of this one
I see according to a report from the
International Fund for Animal Welfare
when some ivory dealers sell carvings
they intentionally retain the ID cards
then fraudulently place them with
carvings made from illegal ivory making
them appear legit the cards themselves
now have a value and are tradable on a
secondary market that’s just
impossible to
confirm that that is the right place
it’s so and this is a simple one this is
a simple problem
the details are boring as I’m walking
through these shops
I am staggered by the prices so the
small one doesn’t require a no photo for
the small how much is this one
two thousand dollars for this
we’re one bracelet it’s amazing huh
we’re seeing $20,000 $50,000 100,000
200,000 and more you’re not thinking
about the elephant when you go into an
RV shop in China
even a consumer who wants to do the
right thing bite not know how because of
all the confusion in the market next
week our final episode takes us back to
East Africa where Aidan Hartley attempts
to gain access to perhaps the largest
government cache of raw ivory in the
world
why should I
you
