Dog Helps Veteran Cope With PTSD, Diabetes | National Geographic

I was diagnosed with PTSD around the
same time that PTSD service dogs became
more well known this is Kira she can
sense when I’m having a nightmare night
sweats I’m a diabetic she can sense when
my sugar levels are out of whack and she
often does that by suddenly paying more
attention to me at first I thought it
was because she wanted attention and
then I discovered she was trying to
remove me from the situation putting my
hands on her calms me down and it calms
her down she senses the chemical changes
in my body
animals know more about body language
than we ever will underflow going to
Vietnam was traumatic enough at the time
it was kind of believed that everybody
that went to Vietnam was going to die
there and being able to take my best
friend take my dog with me and know that
the dog was going to be with me all the
time was great I’ve often said that we
didn’t train the dogs to protect those
army airfields or those ammunition
storage areas we trained the dog to
protect the handler so what the
government did is they put me in a
dangerous situation but then they gave
me the dog to protect me and we survived
