Cork in a Bottle | National Geographic

can I borrow your empty bottle of wine
okay got a deal for you
yes I can do something amazing right
you’ve got to buy me a bottle wine how’s
that that’s firm right try and get this
in Oh
so I’m recalling the bottle of wine now
if you think this looks tough you should
try getting the core out but that’s
exactly the idea my question to you guys
is this how can you get that cork which
came from this bottle of wine out of
that bottle without smashing the bottle
using one of four options we’ll go with
that first which is a random skewer from
behind the bar a vacuum pump the next
one is a regular plastic bag or the
corkscrew that we use to get the cork
out of the bottle make your choices and
we get a free bottle of wine
yeahbsolutely what do you think what are
you gonna use so you’re going for the
skewer one for the skewer great do the
vacuum pump the vacuum pump back so
they’ve gone for the skewer and the
vacuum pump but could it still be the
plastic bag or the corkscrew okay so
you’re going for the skewer now the
problem is you need a lot of force to
squeeze a cork through a tight hole
there you go now pull down I don’t think
I need cover money on the pocket quite
yet all right you’re giving up on that
one
so the skewer hasn’t worked how about
the pump I usually do this by myself
even the pump can’t provide enough force
but what about the plastic bag check
this out I’m drinking the rest of the
work is this goddess Nautilus all right
we’ll see about that
right so the cork is there right yeah
what’s the market
oh no way unbelievable Wow
Riku is ready all right so unbelievably
it’s the humble plastic bag that rescues
the cork do you wanna know the science
behind this yes okay it’s all to do with
friction okay
the rough surface of the cork and the
fact that it has to be compressed to fit
in the bottleneck makes removing it seem
impossible but the inflated bag creates
a hook helping you apply more force and
then provides a smooth barrier that
reduces friction helping the cork to
slide out with relative ease and that is
how you can pull a cork out of a wine
ball with a plastic bag
the wines on you awesome
