my name is William Randolph Hearst I’m
sure you know the Hearst family quite
well I reinvented the newspaper world my
philosophy is that there is an
opportunity in every obstacle conflict
is a good thing because it makes someone
think on their feet it’s like a chess
game in that sense I think what it takes
to be a genius is you have to see beyond
the present situation you have to make
the connections you have to draw on
everything that you’ve experienced in
your life and everything that you’ve
read and everything that you’ve been
given you create the future around you I
invented a new form of journalism one
that just didn’t wait around for the
world to happen there’s a story there’s
a human story in every story that I
think is the real element of a great
story if I didn’t invent that I cleared
out all the other stuff and got to the
heart of what a real story is available
how do I compare myself to Pulitzer I
owe a lot to him to get me off the
ground but after that he started a
competition that he really wasn’t able
to finish Pulitzer pushed me to be a
better newspaperman and when I pushed
back after a while I think his steam
just went out maybe it is his age his
ingenuity couldn’t keep up with mine
maybe it was the money so you asked if I
felt sorry for mr. Pulitzer and I would
have to say that I do not feel sorry for
mr. Pulitzer Life deals you a hand gives
you a circumstance and the only thing
you can truly control is what you do
about it so I don’t really feel sorry
for anyone in that sense who won who won
the battle between Hearst and Pulitzer I
did of course but I think of really one
is the American people because they got
two geniuses making the best out of each
other and they got better journalism
years from now I think we’ll both be
remembered in different ways I will be
remembered as someone who ignited the
common man’s spirit which
different than Pulitzer because Pulitzer
I think will be remembered as a good
newspaper guy a good businessman who ran
successful papers for a while but in
that sense he will be a footnote in the
world of journalism where his Hurst’s
name my name will be remembered as a
game-changer as someone who changed the
way the news happens
