is one of the highlights of my schedule
it’s always a great pleasure for me to
return here to the Grosvenor auditorium
in Washington DC and welcome to our
lucky 7th 10th anniversary at 16th
annual 20th anniversary edition of the
National Geographic Bee we started
collecting names of people who could
possibly moderate a contest that would
be somewhat like you think of a spelling
bee but a geography bee and so I tuned
in watched Alex and it was a one of
those moments where you just watch it
and say he would be perfect you know
it’s so obvious that I can’t imagine it
was it any discussion about it
you know I never get tired of hearing
that little bit of music there are so
many good moments with Alex over the
years of the date what have you got in
the bag um I pocket knife this is not
that kind of competition Jenna I’m
telling you you told me a little while
ago that you partied last night I did
yeah
you want to tell the folks about that
what kind of party are we talking about
here well let’s see we had a big pillow
fight Mitchell was in the shower and I
think you’ve told us enough oh gosh
you’re gonna go all Alex Trebek on me
out there aren’t you Stefan what did you
mean by that
andrews phrased it properly in the form

I covered the entire spectrum of
geographic knowledge he knows everything
that can be known about geography and I
know the rest I would never engage in a
geography context with Alex Trebek I
would lose miserably both responses are
wrong you are still tied
isn’t this fun fellows and I don’t know
anyone else who could pronounce all

for our first big test of the day I am
about to introduce all of the players
and we’ll see if I can do it and
pronounce all of their names correctly

wants he deep down wants every kid to do
with it you know investment in all of
their success and it really comes across

I think that he wants every child to
succeed world over here greater goal he
just loves young people a co it’s it’s
so clear and i have many memories it
seems that the contestants each year get
brighter and brighter it also appears to
me and i don’t know why that they have
gotten younger and younger no matter
what happens in this hour when you think
of the odds of getting up here to this
stage all ten of these students are
indeed champions and deserve some
applause it really is no way we get
adequately thank alex trebek for the
incredible level of performance for the
last 25 years but i’m hoping that it
will become an annual event and that i
will be invited back 23 years from now
to celebrate a quarter century of the
