problem with the pursuit of happiness is
that when life’s storms come along
happiness disappears and then you’re
left with nothing and so you need to
pursue something that’s deeper than
happiness your ultimate happiness will
come from serving other people I think
you should be doing something you’re
passionate about rise and shine it’s an

the description below if you’re gonna
speak effectively you have to know way
more than you’re talking about
we’ve had a long conversation in our
culture about the necessity for self
esteem and happiness and that’s not what
I’m talking about I tell my audiences
and my readers very straightforwardly
that life is difficult and that there’s
a lot of suffering in it and that you
have to learn how to conduct yourself in
the face of that the problem with the
pursuit of happiness is that when life’s
storms come along happiness disappears
and then you’re left with nothing and so
you need to pursue something that’s
deeper than happiness and if happiness
comes along well then hooray for you you
don’t want to despise it because it’s
fleeting but it’s much better to pursue
things that are meaningful than things
that make you happy it’s deeper and and
it Orient’s you more appropriately in it
and it keeps you centered in your own
life and makes you more useful for your
family and your community
so a lot of what people find in life
that provides them with a sustaining
meaning is a consequence of not the
pursuit of Rights or the pursuit of
happiness or or the or the or the
development of self-esteem but the
adoption of responsibility and the more
responsibility in some sense the better
responsibility for yourself for making
sure that your life lays itself out like
it should responsibility for your family
responsibility for the community it’s
people who take responsibility that are
the ones that you admire and that’s the
right pathway through life that’s where
meaning is to be found and I think
that’s probably the crucial issue is
that identification of a profound
relationship between responsibility and
meaning and for many of the people that
I’m talking with it seems like that’s
the first time that that’s been
articulated for them for me pursuing
happiness is the same thing as pursuing
meaning I make a difference between
happiness I guess an ultimate happiness
if you really sit down if you really
have to think about what does ultimate
happiness look like to you chances are
it’s going to be something that is
deeply meaningful to you where it’s not
for most people though is because most
people are trying to run away from a
life that they don’t like instead of
building a life that they do
if you’re in the camp which i think is
most people especially in America most
people are trying to run away from a
life that they don’t like they want to
blame their boss they want to complain
about their environment they want to
blame the president they want to blame
something else right and so you sit down
on the couch every night in your bed jet
watching Netflix you can’t wait for the
evens you can’t wait for the weekends
you can’t wait for your next vacation
you’re just running away from electa you
don’t like if you ask that person if
you’re just constantly escape mode what
makes you happy what’s ultimate
happiness for you it’ll be very much
thoughts around running away from a
lefty don’t like it’ll be I can’t wait
to set my own hours I couldn’t wait to
be my own boss ultimate happiness is
lying on the beach and and having this
amazing vacation that’s all it’s not
humans are built to serve your ultimate
happiness will come from serving other
people if you are not happy in your life
the path through is to serve more people
either more in terms of wider audience
or more deeply with the people who are
closest to you some people are built to
serve the world I’m one of those people
I want to serve as many people as
possible I want to serve the world I
want to reach a billion entrepreneurs I
want to solve the world’s biggest
problem that’s what motivates and drives
me some people like my wife Nina are
much more round serving the twenty
closest people to them that’s who she
wants to serve but if you’re actually
unhappy in life that’s the answer it’s
through services through meaning is by
impact in other people’s lives the world
or the people closest to you but
somebody whose constant escape mode
often can’t see that they’re so blocked
and blinded by the negativity of their
work environment right now in their life
and they haven’t decided to make a
change that they stay there that they
think ultimate happiness is just lying
on the beach all day so I’m going to
work the opposite of that is then
education right do you want to be
entertained or do you want education are
you going to try to run away from a life
that you don’t like or you’re gonna try
to run toward something that you want to
create entrepreneurs are sort of
business just trying to run away from a
life that they hate you’re never gonna
win you have to want to create something
better those are the entrepreneurs who
ultimately win you have to choose
education over entertainment if you hate
your life are you the kind of person
who’s going to sit there in bed
watch for hours Netflix we’re gonna take
those 4 hours and say I’m gonna make my
life better I’m gonna change my
situation I’m gonna educate myself so I
can learn how they get out of this hole
because I don’t want to be here either
way you don’t want to be there it’s just
you escape it and veg out and complain
and blame or do you go and build a
better world for yourself and I think
these people hopefully most of you guys
these people the entrepreneurs we want
to build a better world we want to
change a situation we want to invest in
ourselves to get better and for you
happiness ultimate happiness is gonna
come through doing meaningful work so I
think at the end of the day ultimate
happiness equals meaning
I just think most people are confused
and the real problem is they’re just
trying to run away from our life they
hate and they haven’t taken the
responsibility and you can’t ability to
say this is on me this is my life and I
can make it better now I’ve got a really
special bonus clip that I think you’re
going to enjoy but before that I’d love
to know your opinion what is ultimate
happiness for you and is it different or
equal to meaning let me know put in the
I think you should be doing something
you’re passionate about so the question
is always you know when I give my
younger self advice you know what I
still go to Stanford which will go to
Stanford Law School possibly but I think
a lot more about why I was doing it was
is it just you know and I was on this
super tract and myself ended up at a big
law firm in New York in my eighth grade
junior high school year but one of my
friends wrote and I know you’re gonna
get into Stanford in four years I went
to Stanford four years later went to
Stanford Law School ended up at a big
law firm in in New York we’re on the
outside everybody wanted to get in on
the inside everybody wanted to get out
when I left after seven months and three
days what one of the one of the people
are down the hall from he said it was
you know really reassuring to see it was
possible to escape from Alcatraz
which you know and all you do is really
just go out the front door but but so
much of our identity gets wrapped up in
the competitions we win and on that and
when you compete and I think a lot of
the credentialing resume building is
this sort of competition when you
compete you do get better at what you’re
competing at if you take lots of SAT
test prep classes you’ll get a better
school on the SAT and when you compete
you get better at beating people on the
narrow things you need to beat them on
but but you often it it often comes at
this very high price of of losing sight
of what’s what’s truly valuable and
important and meaningful which is well I
think passion is well there’s sort of
all sorts of other there all sorts of
things that could be that but but I
think I think it often that I think it
often ends up being something that’s a
little bit off the beaten path because I
think you know there’s obviously
financial version where you get to be
have a monopoly like business there’s a
meaningful version I think is always
counterfactual where if you weren’t
doing this would you know it’s great to
be working on problems where if you
weren’t working on them nobody else
would do them you know if you’re working
at the fourth online pet food company
the 10th mm solar panel company the
1000th restaurant in Philadelphia
there’s a sense that if you weren’t
doing it someone else would you know if
you’re working
at at something where it’s the only
thing of its kind in the world that’s
very meaningful if we weren’t if we
won’t end it to be for profit nonprofit
all sorts of context if we weren’t doing
this this problem would absolutely not
be tackled I think that’s the kind of
that’s what’s that’s what’s meaningful
and if you want more Jordan Peterson
check out the top fifty rules video I
made on him the link is right there next
to me I think you’ll enjoy it
continue to believe and I’ll see you
there stop doing the things that you
know are wrong that you could stop doing
if you’re failing repeatedly it’s
possible that there’s something wrong
with the way that you’re conceptualizing the world
that when life’s storms come along
happiness disappears and then you’re
left with nothing and so you need to
pursue something that’s deeper than
happiness your ultimate happiness will
