Add Massive VALUE – #OneRule

putting something in the world of value
value value add value to people add some
value create the most value add more
value pretty much value
what’s up believe nation it’s Evan my
one word is believe and I believe that
you have the ability to do something
special that will change the planet and
so to help you on your journey today
we’re going to learn how to add massive
value
[Music]
and the greatest thing in my and my
career has been the constant commitment
to putting something in the world of
value not putting something in the world
that makes me look hot yeah you know
yeah so I think as long as you can stay
focused on delivering your art and
delivering yourself and delivering your
energy and delivering your ideas for the
world to be better what does it take to
create world-class marketing what is the
unique selling proposition what is what
we call value-added marketing vie I am
today most people are sick and tired of
advertising because where is it
everywhere in fact I got a question for
you how many of you in this room do not
even see banner ads anymore literally
it’s there but you don’t perceive it
like there’s like your brain literally
washes it out raise your hand if that’s
true keep your hands nice and high and
look around the room right now and
you’ll see 98% of the people wash it out
so don’t buy them unless you’re gonna
create something really unique it’s a
total waste of your money and your time
on the world rent today today what
creates marketing is when you don’t just
mark it but you add value to people you
do something you teach them you give
them an insight you give something
valuable that cost them nothing and then
they look to you as an expert they look
to you as a person that adds value they
want they want you to supply them more
information more experience more
products and more services Steadman and
I were in a hotel watching some bad
television and I was complaining about
the state of television talk shows in
particular and he said why don’t you
change it why don’t you just get your
own Network and I thought that that was
a ridiculous idea and then he started to
talk about it and he wrote some things
down and I saw the word own at that Oh
Oh W oh that’s my those are my initials
and I said wouldn’t it be something if I
could create a network that was really
about mindful and I underlined the word
mindful television 15 years later those
scribblings
came closer to reality when she was
approached by David zasloff the
president of the Discovery Network
my view was if we want to do this you
have to be all in she paused and then
she said to me it’s meant to be and we
shook hands and that’s how our journey
began at first I thought great Network
all geez this is the dream I had
and I actually showed him the piece of
paper where I’d written it down in
Steadman’s and as that started to settle
in with me I thought whoa what is this
I’ve gotten myself into this is a lot
more work than I ever imagined are you
scared very scared I was very scared and
I would wake up in the middle of the
night literally go like clutching my
chest like what have I done what have I
done what if you fail mmm that’s what I
was afraid of that’s what I was afraid
of the reason why I made the decision to
go forward is because I believe that
people deserve to have value centered
inspirational programming for themselves
I believe that television has become in
many ways banal it has become insipid
and not ever not all of it but I think
that I have something to offer
you don’t realize I am so frustrated
like I am so frustrated like I am so
I’ve got so much I want to give I’ve got
ideas on color palettes I’ve got ideas
on silhouettes and I’ve got a million
people telling me why I can’t do it you
know that I’m not a real designer I’m
not this I’m not a real rapper either
I’m not a real musician either like I
don’t know how to play the piano like
I’m an artist I went to art college I
went to art college and was looked at
like I’m soft because I like wore like
Italian clothes you know I’m saying when
I’m rapping in front of camera and my
pants is tight trying to spit a verse
for cam you know that’s the same when
I’m sitting there you know like sitting
there out of fashion show like I’m there
because I appreciate Phoebe Philo I
appreciate
cinnamons I appreciate Riccardo Tisci
and I look at them as my peers as
creative people who dedicate their
entire life to making something better
for the world is that mean let me
explain what anybody that knows are
artists and you know someone that’s
giving that if you know artists there’s
only one thing you can say give or ask
them when you see them there are two
words thank you there’s no why did you
do this you’re what that what’s that
no we dedicate our entire life to making
our current time and civilization better
to adding something to the culture and
there is only two words that you can say
thank you when somebody comes and says
John I want to be a leader I was asking
the question why why do you want to be a
leader I mean you want to be a leader
because you want a corner office do you
wanna be a leader because you like to be
in control you like to want to be a
leader because you love to be in the
front of the pack you want to be a
leader because you want to have a good
parking place what do you want to be a
leader because leadership is an easy
leadership a lot of times isn’t fun
leadership a lot of times it’s kind of
lonely there’s only one reason to be a
leader and that is to add value to
people and you and I will only add value
to people if we truly value them I have
a nonprofit organization equipped this
trained almost two million leaders
internationally around the world and I
kid you not as I go to developing
countries twice a year and I travel
internationally and I sit down sometimes
I had the privilege of been in the
office as a presidents of countries and
as I watch these two developing
countries the thing that is the cardinal
sin among leadership so much is that
they have leaders of their countries
that truly don’t value the people and if
you and I don’t value people we will
devalue people number two if you want to
add value to people you have to make
yourself more valuable you just have to
get better you have to keep growing you
have to keep learning you have to keep
developing why very simply if you’re
leading the pack you’ve got to be able
to give what you have and you can’t give
what you don’t have and so therefore
you’ve got to put a lot of good
stuff in so that you can pass it on to
others and share with them and and add
value to them thirdly if you want to add
value to people you have to know and
relate to what other people value you
and I have to walk slowly to the crowd
we have to listen we have to care you
see great leaders are first of all
listeners and then they’re learners and
then their leaders they really do take
their cue from the people they
understand that the key of leadership is
connecting with the people that you lead
and the only way that you and I ever
connect is by caring enough to listen
number four is very important to me when
I’m speaking in the business community I
always share with them that for them
there are three ways to add value to
people but for me there are four and I
tell them I’ll give them the three and
then there and so I’ll I’ll spend maybe
an hour doing those three things I just
shared with you just talking about how
to add value to people and inevitably
when I’m done with the three somebody
raise their hand say John you said there
for you there was four but you said
there’s only three for us I said yes
it’s nothing personal but this is about
my faith and so I don’t really need to
share this with you it’s because I’m
trying to help you and I I don’t want to
cross boundaries with you and never ever
be they’ll say but John tell us what
yours is and I’ll say well okay you
could hear mine but don’t write it down
in fact don’t listen because number four
for me is if I really want to add value
to people I have to do the things the
god value I don’t know sometimes you
feel like a total waste of space really
when you look at people with proper jobs
and then you’re like one of my doom
flouncing around putting on voice isn’t
resting up but people need to go to the
pictures and people need some sort of
escape artist don’t let people down like
politicians let people die don’t know
bankers let people down the quality the
work life fluctuate but I keep making it
we keep trying and I keep giving some
sort of sucker I think you know kind of
overpaid and and there’s a huge amount
of stupidity and hot air that that
surrounds it all and a lot of that I
don’t subscribe to but I think sometimes
the film can change someone’s life if
you can do that through these RIT nuts
feel like you’re giving something
important I add some value there’s a
true societal and business value
proposition there’s a contribution I
find and I don’t do this for reasons
other than the fact that you can’t
long-term build a viable business
without making a real contribution most
people look at they can start a business
do an IPO make some money almost always
that leads to businesses that are round
trips what I call good they go up and go
down to build a durable business you
really have to focus on the value
proposition I get a lot of questions
from other people who run companies
about organizations I think that if you
the important thing that you do is about
measure ability and repeatability than
hierarchical organizations are
appropriate but that’s not what is
happening in our industry the rate of
innovation is not remaining constant
it’s not like we’re plateauing in just
about every dimension innovations
increasing and the most effective
organizations are those that can
self-organize and that are relatively
that are extremely flat
and that the question when you’re trying
to think about how your how your company
is organized or how you want it to grow
is how you can deliver help people
deliver smart and creative people create
the most value and delivered as
efficiently as possible to their to your
customers life should be incredibly
valuable to you if you really value your
days like that day becomes valuable so
because your day is valuable you get
stuff done you know why a lot of people
end up feeling really broke is because
they’re not valuing their day they’re
broke because they added no value to
their today they were reaching celebrity
gossip magazines they were screwing
around online they were doing nothing
that actually moved the needle in terms
of their personal progress and their
professional progress so value this day
you want to make more money get serious
about tomorrow value that day ask how
you can add more value into the day
really work the day and as you do that
over and over and over again you ask how
can I serve how can I contribute how can
I take it the next level you do that
long enough
the breakthrough happens the magic
happens and the money takes care of
itself you continue to add value to
people’s lives and then the more you do
that for a long enough period of time it
starts to have a bit of a ripple effect
well if you focus on that then you get
like this
[Music]
so but if you focus on this you never
get it and if you’re chasing money
you’ll be chasing your whole life but if
you’re trying to create value and the
more value that you create then you
figure out an economic engine around
creating that value then you can spend
your whole life just doing that you know
and then in that particular scenario
money you know it follows it doesn’t
lead thank you guys so much for watching
