HackPittsburgh – Assassins Creed Armor – Ironman Helmet – Light Saber – Shock Glove Update ft Jeremy

welcome to hack Pittsburgh this is a
community based makerspace remembers can
gain access to a workshop full of tools
and machines to make their projects come
to life there’s still a lot I have to
learn when it comes to being a maker
luckily I’ve met some awesome people
here who are kind enough to help me
develop new skills so I can apply them
to teacher gadgets and Bill’s I’m Jeremy
and I’m going to be helping out through
these projects the designer director for
25,000 square foot haunted house for
about 10 years
I worked as a machinist with my day job
this is what’s called a veggie tan
leather and it’s actually three
different layers that have been glued
together and I had tool each layers I
went this was one of my earlier projects
I can do it a little bit cleaner now but
I did this and I liked it and somehow or
another I left it out in the Sun so the
color ended up coming out a really nice
antique silver medical costume because
it had this I made the bracer as well
but that’s at home attached to the blade
I’m trying to fix actually this year was
the first year anyone’s noticed the
little apple of Eden I worked into the
design just for fun but these were kind
of an early design I can do a little bit
better now if I had access to the laser
cutter at the time I could have done a
little bit better than till work but the
well done was a little nice and that
piece I mean even just coming up with
the stencils I use with hours worth of
work I mean it probably took me a solid
week to make that and I was doing very
little else one of these lines had to be
carved in and then any place where it’s
embossed or pushed up in any way I had
to sit there with a little pool in the
path tap tap tap tap tap I probably
spent at least a hundred dollars on
different leather dyes trying to find
something to
work and you know what isn’t working
with that 99 cents silver sharpie from
Walmart that is that is what gave this
color and then be accidentally leaving
this in my car exposure to sign fool
implied it and he kid like that
so crazy but all that time and effort
into dying and it was something that
simple I mean that still looks pretty
good just for literally taking it and
just coloring it on the leather you and
then the rest of it I just took black
dye and stippled that in like I said
it’s kind of an early piece it’s
starting to show its age a little bit I
need to do a little POC on it and you
made like the entire suit in like two
months
I made it two months while working
full-time teaching ten hours a week at
gymnastics school and working in another
haunted house on the weekend so I
basically just linked those two months
but that I found out two months
beforehand I was going to get to go to
the con so that was the timeframe ahead
and I decided I was going to meet
Stanley I wanted to do it an Iron Man
suit so this is the helmet from the suit
was on the faceplate
this is a really tight fit originally I
was going to put a magnetic thing to
hold the faceplate on and actually put
like a video screen in here with a
camera I had the Raspberry Pi to do it
and everything but I did a little too
good of a job why size this because as
you can see there’s not a whole lot of
clearance in between my face and the
mask a lot of this was done with a
program called pepakura it takes the
three-dimensional model and flatten to
the polygons you printed out a card
stock and that’s what this was
originally was just cardstock and then
just layers of a urethane resin on the
inside I use I reinforced a little bit
with an epoxy product from smooth on my
ears about now but it wasn’t perfect it
wasn’t exactly what I would have wanted
in terms of the helmets but is it served
the purpose and I got to hang out with
family in an Ironman suit so that was
sort of a tick off bucket list cut out
the cardstock pieces you glue it
together according to the numbers it’s
just tabs and slots and then you just
start painting resin on the outside and
on the inside
some people use polyester resin or most
people call it fiberglass resin that you
can get from Walmart because well it’s
cheap and readily available I use
urethane because I like it a little bit
more full easier to work with and it
doesn’t make you high it’s really light
it’s not as strong as bondo but it’s way
easier to work with and it just added a
little extra strength to it and then
yeah just hot gluing magnets in the
screens and so I could at least see a
little bit this was really quick and
dirty by the way if you’re doing
costuming and stuff magnets are a really
awesome way to help you do attachments
because this is the back piece of the
helmet because this thing has such a
tight fit on me I can’t put the whole
thing on as one piece I actually have to
put it on and then someone has to clip
the back part on
if you have access to a laser cutter or
vinyl cutter and take a little bit of a
shortcuts that before will export what’s
called a DXF file which is the type of
file a lot of laser cutters see plasma
cutters or funky selling cutters and
vinyl cutters will yes I have a piece at
home I’ll send you the picture of it
this part of the Iron Man helmet but
it’s made out of steel and what I did
when I was in school is I took that the
core file put it into the CNC plasma
table it cut out the steel blank then I
just bent it into shape weld it along a
line ground it flat
you need something weird welded or you
need something to be absolutely perfect
you go for take one of the Iron Man
suits I want to work on a steampunk
version so I made ID cards for me this
is pretty cool this looks like it was it
was spun on the lathe yeah turned on the
lathe and then a lot of detail work like
it said it’s still a little rough so a
lot of the detail work was done on the
middle the main may want to victims
emitters
I don’t like elephants were started to
come out that’s why I didn’t finish them
because that looks just way too rough
for me so I’m going to start a new
method which thankfully I think I’m
going to be able to do that as a new job
it’s designed to hold all the
electronics and everything I also want
to go with a little bit smaller design
because it feels a little too big and
diameter but so I found scraps in force
what I use so nice thing about being
machinist if I want something I can make
it right now I’ve got a couple
lightsaber commissions I’m actually
doing one’s a curved hilt that I want to
do for a mash-up between Joker and a
Sith Lord because that was like fun I
want to make a light they were so pulses
colors between purple red and green does
that just seem like that would be
Virginia
so Jeremy is also in really awesome
shape he is a gymnast and also free
runner
definitely some skills there that he
could teach me that would apply to being
a superhero when you’re doing backflips
it obviously has some awesome upper body
strength doing all of these different
exercises
[Music]
yes that’s awesome like a ninja
look at them go yeah
ninja definitely a ninja
[Music]
oh and did I mention he’s also got some
pretty sweet dancing all right so this
battery here and this little black box
with the wires attached to it is
actually a voltage booster the ultrafire
battery that I’m using is running off a
3.7 volts I have this momentary
push-button switch that we’ve salvaged I
don’t think it works but we’re going to
try it out and Jeremy is going to give
me a hand and we’re going to see if we
can use this as kind of a quick and
dirty little prototype and again
connecting it he has this thermo plastic
called sintra that he uses in cosplay
and we want to see if it can act as an
insulator for this build and so Jeremy
is kind of being the guinea pig here
well I’ll just let you guys watch this
[Music]
you think it’s conductive yeah it is
that’s not good I know what actually use
that or something yeah so yeah you just
got that cool so what we’re trying to do
here is create these Batman gauntlets
and here you can see like a schematic it
looks like it came from one of the games
pretty cool and we’re going to be using
this accelerometer to trigger the
switches on whenever you throw a punch
so I think it’ll be a pretty cool gadget
when it’s fully done Thank You Jeremy
for showing us some of your awesome gear
and explaining how it was made
I’m looking forward to working with you
I hope you enjoyed this video and learn
something new if you could please
subscribe and sign up for the
notification squad that would help a ton
and I’d really appreciate it thanks for
watching and as always take it easy
well at range
