Knock’em out before they knock you out.

I think one of the biggest challenges to most entrepreneurs is that they’ll say things like
this.
“Well, you know, I’m not a sales type of guy.
I’m going to bring somebody in.”
Bullshit.
You need to learn how to sell.
“But you don’t understand.
I don’t need to because xyz.
. .” BS.
You need to learn how to sell.
You need to learn how to sell to survive.
Just think about it this way.
Let me explain another thing.
Every single day you go into your work with your business, everybody wants to put you
out of business.
Everybody.
That’s their job.
It’s their job.
They’re supposed to put you out of business.
They’re supposed to make sure you go out of business.
They’re supposed to do whatever they can to put you out of business.
They want your market!
And you’re bothering them.
You’re in their way, okay?
Whether you’re in real estate, an insurance agent, technology software, pharmaceuticals,
it doesn’t matter.
You’re taking a portion of their market away from them.
Okay.
Let me ask you a question.
If you and I grew up in the worst part of a city, where the streets are all gangsters,
tough guys — and you and I were 12, 13 years old.
We’re two boys, we’re friends.
You and I are living in the city and we just moved into the city.
Everybody in the streets is a tough guy.
What do you think you and I need to learn?
What’s the number one skill set you and I need to learn?
How to fight!
Man, I don’t care how smart you are.
If you don’t know how to fight, you’re gonna be.
. . you’re going to go home every day with a black eye, with your shoes missing.
Every day you’re lunch money’s going to be taken away from you.
Now let’s just say you learn how to fight.
Okay.
First bully comes to you.
What’s the rule of thumb in fights?
Be the first to hit him.
So if the kid comes up to bully you, boom, you hit him in the face.
Wait a minute, everyone’s typically scared of this guy.
Okay, you hit in the face, they’re gonna whoop your ass, because there’s more of you, but
then they’re gonna walk away saying, “Dude, leave that fricking guy alone.
He’s crazy.”
They’re going to try to recruit you to their gang.
The same goes in business, in entrepreneurship.
If you learn how to sell, BOOM!
And then they say, “Oooh, be careful with that guy.
Either let’s partner with them, let’s recruit them, or we’ve got to compete with that dude.”
That’s not someone to be messing with.
You’ve got to learn how to sell.
That’s the first thing I would say to somebody who is a rookie entrepreneur.
