Game of Thrones Accent Tutorial – The Lannisters!

let’s break down the actions and voices
of Game of Thrones so obviously I’m not
going to list every character in Game of
Thrones but I have included the main
people those are the people that you
clicked on this video to watch yes
including the human romance puppeyface
Jon Snow so there is some logic in the
accent representation in the show for
example if you come from the south of
Westeros you’ll have a southern English
accent if you come from the north like
Jon Snow
they will have northern English accents
so let’s start in the south of Westeros
this accent is the most similar to my
accent so what you’re hearing now is
more represented in the south of
Westeros because I’m from the south of
England and like I said earlier it’s
kind of mirrored in the show so here we
have the RP accent receive pronunciation
posh classy well-spoken an elegant
sounding British accent that you hear in
movies all the time so who has the RP
accent Khaleesi Cersei Brienne of Tarth
Tyrion Sansa Stark is stabbed also
Catelyn Stark and of course
Tywin Lannister the epitome of an RP
accent received pronunciation is the
posh accent however there are slight
variations of how people could sound
with an RP accent the best way to do it
is to put it on a scale of poshness so
let’s look at the top scale of Pasha’s
the poshest sounding RP accent in Game
of Thrones definitely belongs to Tywin
Lannister also high Sparrow those two
definitely there at the top up there now
they adhere to most if not all of the
rules of RP pronunciation common
characteristics of upper RP are but not
limited to these clear enunciation you
want the listener to understand every
word every syllable of those words and
make sure there is no misunderstanding
of what said T sounds in words they will
be pronounced correctly for example
water Tywin Lannister would never say
water no that’s not very Lannister he
would pronounce it water but also Tywin
Lannister’s played by Charles dance
a classically trained actor who projects
his voice making him sound even more
commanding and authoritative also the R
sound that’s produced with something
which is called an alveolar tap that
means your tongue hits the back of the
top teeth creating an R sound so instead
of pronouncing your are like a rah rah
it’s more of a rah rah instead of saying
tomorrow tomorrow also the sound our for
example in words like power flower
shower then they have showers in
Westeros I don’t know that our sound is
reduced to a singular R sound so instead
of power he might say it like power
words with Inge he would pronounce the
Inge for example a word like walking he
wouldn’t say Walken no that’s not very
Lannister now we can see two ways in
which he speaks one is that super RP
accent this is when he wants to sound
formal and the other is a more casual
more relaxed RP for example when he’s
talking with family his voice will
become more relaxed maybe he’ll drop a
few T’s but when reprimanding Joffrey
for example he went straight back into
that upper class RP accent where he
enunciates every word every sound slowly
and very carefully he wants you to hear
and understand every word from his mouth
now below Tywin we would have Tyrion
Nell Tyrion is played by an American
actor called Peter Dinklage and he has
opted for a very interesting style of RP
more stiff upper lips RP there’s not
much movement in the mouth if you talk
with a stiff upper lip it helps with
that upper RP pronunciation but it is
quite distinct to that character now is
that a character thing that Peter
Dinklage decided to do for Tyrion I
don’t know you’d have to ask him either
way he’s very well-spoken he does do a
very interesting thing however which is
also characteristic of upper class RP
and that’s when a word ends with an e
sound it gets compressed into an ear
sound for example in words like really
could sound like really if you wanted an
example of the upper R P R and E
together in one word the word very is a
good example very that’s how I would
pronounce it but someone with a very
upper RP accent might say it like very
getting that alveolar tapped R and
changing that e to an it sound further
down the scale I would put khaleesi
Brienne of Tarth Sansa Stark Arya Stark
also Catelyn Stark and Jaime Lannister
they have a slightly more relaxed RP
sounding accent this is much more
representative of a modern-day RP accent
that upper-class RP accent is not super
common today especially not with
Millennials
especially not with younger people one
thing that distinguishes this group from
these guys is they don’t use that
alveolar tap for there are sounds and in
general they just sound more relaxed
there’s no stiffening of the upper lip
it’s more representative of a modern-day
RP so to go back to the word tomorrow
Tywin Lannister might pronounce it
tomorrow
whereas this group of people they would
not they would just pronounce it like I
do tomorrow
now Cersei Lannister I put her slightly
down on this scale why is more often
than not she will include a glottal tea
and whereas Tywin might stick to the
rules in say I might try Cersei with a
bit of attitude might say I might try
making that tea sound a glottal stop she
sounds more relaxed in her speech when
she’s given a bit of attitude which is
about 90% of the time that’s why she’s
slightly lower on this scale they all
fall under RP but they follow different
rules with the pronunciation now if we
think of this group this represents
modern RP we get further up and they
stick to the rules more and more the
Queen of England for example would not
be on this scale she’s up here somewhere
now in the south of Westeros there is
another southern English accent but it’s
not an RP accent
it’s more similar to a cockney or
estuary accent and usually if you hear
this accent it’s by a guard who is about
to die I think there’s something out
there
if the cockney type of accent I have a
video on cogniat cents that goes into
way more detail you can find that link
in the description the term company was
a pejorative term for the working class
so if you think working-class less well
educated of course they’re going to be
the grunts in the army whose job it is
to to what be the first ones to die is
it classist yes of course it is but it’s
game of thrones it’s supposed to be
awful we’ll get to human puppy eyes but
he’s a bit later
