2014 Expedition Granted Finalist: Through The Surface | National Geographic

surfing has brought massive amounts
mobile attention waves pipeline
Cloudbreak and Teahupoo making their
reefs among the most famous pieces of
ocean floor in the world
unfortunately the health status of these
reefs that create these ways is seldom
understood and rarely recognized a great
breaking wave doesn’t necessarily mean a
healthy reef system as surfer scientists
we have a unique perspective that allows
us to understand the reason and below
the water together we have pioneered
innovative technologies that allow us to
accurately assess the health of the reef
my name is Quintin Edwards and I use
large-scale high-resolution imagery to
assess the structure of the reef my name
is Cooper Kapono and I look at the
molecule spot on the surface of these
corals to interpret the corals health
the National Geographic expedition
granted opportunity will allow us to
analyze these reef states and interpret
it from both a surfer and scientific
perspective the ultimate goal of this
project is to use our imagery to educate
inspire both surfers and non surfers
alike about what is happening below
these beautiful waves by leveraging the
extensive online surf media coverage
already occurring in these locations and
publicly providing our images and
findings on our website we’re determined
to raise awareness and participation in
helping to care for these treasure
grieves join us as we look through the
surface
